  • Ekiti guber: APC picks Egbeyemi as Fayemi’s running mate

The Former Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government in Ekiti State, Adebisi Adegboyega Egbeyemi, has been nominated as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State.

Egbeyemi was picked as the candidate after party leaders met for long hours to consider who is best suited to pair with former Governor and immediate past Minister of Mines an Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to fly the party’s flag in the governorship contest.

Egbeyemi’s choice came after speculations by the expectant public spread that certain eminent indigenes of the state had been picked to fly the ticket with Fayemi in the July 14, 2018 governorship poll.

He is an indigene of Ado-Ekiti, born on May 8, 1944, to the family of the late Egbeyemi Alade and late Madam Tinubu Egbeyemi.

Egbeyemi started his education at the Holy Trinity Anglican School, Ilawe-Ekiti and Baptist School, Ado-Ekiti, after which he attended Harding Memorial Modern School, Ado-Ekiti.

He studied privately while working as a Laboratory Assistant at Ekitiparapo College, Ido-Ekiti, and while working as a bursar at Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, Egbeyemi sat as a private student to pass both the GCE O’Level and Advanced Level examinations.

He later proceeded to the University of Lagos College of Education where he graduated in Biology and Physical Education with distinction. He taught briefly at the St Mary’s Girls Secondary School, Ikole-Ekiti, in 1975 before he was transferred to the Teachers’ College, Oye-Ekiti, as a pioneer Physical Education tutor between 1975 and 1977.

He later went to the University of Ife to read Law between 1977 and 1980 before proceeding to the Law School in Lagos for his Barrister at Law certificate and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981 as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

His political experiences spanned many fields, including the Youth Leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) between 1979 and 1983; a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly in 1983; and Executive Chairman of Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1991 and 1993.

Others include Leader of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in Ado-Ekiti Local Government between 1996 and 1997 and were founding member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), using the platform to win the House of Representatives election that was cancelled by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, in 1998.

Between 1991 and 1992, he was Commissioner of Education and between 2001 and 2002, Egbeyemi was a member of the Governing Council of the National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna.

  • JUST IN: Fayemi tenders resignation as Buhari’s Minister

The Minister of Mines and Steel, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has finally resigned his appointment by President Muhammadu to enable him to pursue his Ekiti State governorship ambition.

Fayemi, it would be recalled, had emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after polling 941 votes to defeat other party contenders such as Segun Oni, Kayode Ojo, Olufemi Richard Bamisile, Oluyede Oluwole, and Aluko Daniel Olugbenga, at the party’s primary in the state.

According to reports, the minister’s resignation as contained in the letter sent to President Buhari takes effect officially from today Wednesday, May 30, 2019.

  • Fayemi, APC’s battle to reclaim Ekiti, By Ehichioya Ezomon

    By Ehichioya Ezomon

A major challenge for the opposition All Progressives Congress, in its desire to regain control of the governorship of Ekiti in the July 14 election, is how to counter the avalanche of disinformation, misinformation and mischaracterization that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party dishes out to the unsuspecting voters in the state.

A sampler. Barely a few hours after the Saturday, May 12 re-scheduled primaries won by former Governor and Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, a spokesperson for Governor Ayodele Fayose claimed that Fayemi was “set to pick a 73-year-old man as deputy.”

However, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, a special assistant to Fayemi, rebutted the assertion by Mr. Lere Olayinka, special assistant to Fayose on Public Communications and New Media, which was posted on his Facebook wall. Said Oyebode: “We finished the governorship primary late Saturday night, and we’re just trying to get over the stress. So, where did Lere Olayinka hear that information? Please, disregard it.”

Expeditious refutal of such claims is one way of defeating the deliberate false or misleading information hallmarking the battle of wits and grits that foreshadows the remaining seven weeks of campaigns before the poll, which heralds the 2019 general elections.

And talking about picking a deputy, the clamour for a Muslim as governor of Ekiti had never been louder, culminating in the PDP adroitly nominating youthful Deji Ogunsakin, a former chairman of Ado Local Government Area, as the running mate to Prof. Kolapo Olusola, a Christian and current deputy governor of the state.

The development, which drew applause from the South-West Muslims, who held a celebratory rally in Ado-Ekiti last Tuesday, has put the first real pressure on Dr. Fayemi and the APC to quickly respond, albeit with equal measure, to avoid alienating two vociferous segments – Muslims and youths – of the Ekiti electorate.

That said, Ekiti 2018 is principally a struggle by a former governor (Fayemi) to checkmate an incumbent (Fayose) that removed him from office in 2014. Although Fayose is not on the ballot, he has vowed to install his deputy, Prof. Olusola, to carry on his “legacy projects” for the Ekiti people.

Fayose, relying on his political philosophy of “100% of 100” (winning all seats on offer), has thrown down the gauntlet, derisively telling Fayemi that he and the APC would be vanquished, once again, in July.

Reacting to Fayemi’s nomination, Fayose, via his Tweeter handle, @GovAyoFayose, wrote: “I thank the APC for giving Ekiti people a candidate they love to vote against at all times. Fayemi should not celebrate this pyrrhic victory (at the primaries) yet because it is nothing but a flame that will be quenched on July 14.”

Another statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, said: “In 2014, when he (Fayemi) was the sitting governor and I ( Fayose) was not in power, I trounced him mercilessly. I gave him 16-0, defeating him in all the (16) local governments, including in his home town.

“Now, I have been in power for more than three years and have served the people of Ekiti well… Fayemi will suffer the worst defeat of his political career. After the July 14 election, he will go into political oblivion. He has nothing to celebrate because of the electoral disaster awaiting him.”

Oddly, the man that gives no thoughts to another’s strength is likely to kiss the dust. Thus, Fayose’s cockiness is a distraction calculated to make Fayemi take his eyes off the ball. With a lot of ground to cover, he should concentrate on getting his “rescue mission” message across to the grassroots, who are better positioned to judge his past administration and the incumbent’s.

The large number of hopefuls at the APC primaries indicates that virtually all 16 local governments in Ekiti are represented in the scramble to spread the governorship slot to all sections of the state. This places the APC in a good stead to win at the July poll.

But only if Fayemi carries along his co-contestants, whose numerical strength, if well-cultivated and harnessed, could do the magic for the APC. He should have at the back of his mind the allegation by Mr. Adelusi that, “The manner of his (Fayemi) so-called victory also leaves much to be desired, as it has turned many of their party leaders and followers against him.”

Certainly, there’s no contest without dissatisfied or aggrieved parties (as Ekiti PDP primaries also show). The good news is that Fayemi recognizes this reality. Hence, in his acceptance speech, he appealed to his co-contestants for supports, and co-opted them into the “Candidate’s Advisory Council,” for the prosecution of the APC campaigns for the election.

His words: “In all electoral contests, tempers often rise and nerves are frayed. I, therefore, humbly appeal to all my supporters, and to my co-contestants and their supporters… that we put our differences aside… Together, we are greater and stronger than the sum of our individual parts, and no individual, myself inclusive, is bigger than our great party.”

With President Muhammadu Buhari rallying the South-West Caucus of the APC, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, and the zonal APC governors, behind him, Dr. Fayemi only needs to build confidence in his 31-member advisory council as “co-owners” of the campaign, and put all issues on the table for consideration, and adoption as an acceptable roadmap for success in July.

  • War Against Fayose: Buhari begs Tinubu, other S/West leaders to reclaim Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose is in for a serious battle as President Muhammadu Buhari tasked South West caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to carry out every legitimate step to win back Ekiti state from.

He gave the charge during a dinner meeting with the party’s leadership in the southwest at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Recall that Fayose who is at loggerheads with Buhari is positioning is Deputy, Kayode Olusola-Eleka to succeed him in office as governor of the state.

Among those at the dinner where Buhari made the proclamation were Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, National Leader of the party Bola Tinubu and National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Immediate past governor of the state Kayode Fayemi, who is currently the minister for Mines and Steel Resources, on Saturday emerged as candidate of the APC for the July 14 governorship election in the state.

And Buhari believes Fayemi has what it takes to restore what he believes are the lost values of the state.

“I know Ekiti fairly well and Ekiti people are well known for their forthrightness, candour and integrity,” he said.

“All of these values seem to have been lost and we must restore these values and return Ekiti to its pride of place in the comity of states.

“As we approach the 2019 elections, the return of Ekiti into the fold of progressive states is important as the election of July 14 is going to be a key pointer to subsequent elections,’’ he said.

The President reechoed his policy of not interfering in the internal affairs of the party at any level, commending Fayemi for reaching out to his co-contestants after Saturday’s primary election.

  • Buhari rallies support for Fayemi, urges party to rescue Ekiti from Fayose

President Muhammadu Buhari last night urged the Southwest caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to take the mission to rescue Ekiti from the opposition Peoples Democratic Partry (PDP) seriously.

The President spoke during a dinner with them at the State House in Abuja.

He urged party members to work together and assured the people of his support.

He told the group that as he promised, he would not interfere in the internal affairs of the party at any level.

Former APC Interim Chairman Chief Bisi Akande said: “We are politicians. We have election in Ekiti on July 14th and we came to get some inspiration, presidential inspiration.

Ekiti belongs to APC and the progressives from the beginning. But, unfortunately, it slipped in 2014 because there was some mishandling. So this time, we are all going to queue behind our party so that we can win the state back come July 14.”

To the Ekiti people, he said: “We will only tell them to avoid belonging to an unpopular party, a party that will not allow Ekiti to develop. And they should belong to the APC.”

The meeting, which started around 8.30p.m at the new Banquet Hall, was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, Chief Akande and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party’s governorship candidate Dr. Kayode Fayemi and the runner-up in the primary, Chief Segun Oni, also attended the meeting.

Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura, who conducted the primary, also attended.

There were also some federal lawmakers, ministers and stakeholders.

  • Fayemi will win Ekiti governorship election with his ‘track records’ – Buhari

Fayemi will win Ekiti governorship election with his ‘track records’ – Buhari

    …as minister resigns this week

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi possess credible credentials to win and rule Ekiti State.

Buhari said this while congratulating the former governor for winning the All Progressives Congress ticket to contest the July 14, 2018 governorship election.

The President’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Buhari also urged those who contested against Fayemi for the ticket to keep upholding the values and philosophy of the party by supporting the APC candidate in the forthcoming election.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari congratulates former governor of Ekiti State and Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi, for winning the APC ticket to contest the July 14, 2018 governorship elections.

“President Buhari commends all the participants in the keenly contested primary, who passionately worked hard to serve the state as governor, urging them to keep upholding the values and philosophy of the party by supporting the APC candidate in the forthcoming elections.

“President Buhari believes that Fayemi’s track record in the state as a reformist, with a penchant for building educational infrastructure and promoting the welfare of the ordinary people, will bolster his chances at the forthcoming polls.

“The President notes that the successful primary in the state, with more than 30 aspirants, further validates the credentials of the APC on internal democracy, and its preparedness to take the country to another level of development.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt on Sunday that Fayemi will this week resign his position as the Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development.

Recall that the minister had on Saturday night emerged as the APC candidate for the election in a keenly contested primary.

He secured 941 votes as against 481 votes polled by his strongest contender, Segun Oni, who is also a former governor of the state.

Fayemi was in April granted a one-month leave of absence by President Buhari to enable him to take part in the primary.

However, having won the primary, sources close to Fayemi said the minister would not return to his office as a substantive minister.

Fayemi, it was learnt, was not ready to delay his campaign in order not to jeopardise his chances during the election.

The source said the late open declaration of the former governor for the race nearly cost him the ticket as many of his initial supporters had declared their loyalty to other aspirants.

The source said, “Fayemi will be in Abuja either on Monday or early Tuesday to submit his letter of resignation to President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Though he could still remain in office till June, at least a month before the election, he needs to be on the ground in Ekiti earlier than that.

“Remember that his late declaration for the position worked against him during the primary as many of his supporters had already started working for other aspirants.

“Because they had declared their loyalty to these aspirants, it was very difficult for the minister to ask them to return.

“But this time around and having emerged as the party’s candidate, we want all of them to return and that can only be achieved when Fayemi returns home fully to take charge.”

Ekiti 2018: Buhari’s boys will unleash terror on Fayose – Dele Momodu

Veteran journalist, Dele Monodu has predicted what will happen to Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, few weeks to the end of his tenure.

The media mogul alleged that Fayose, a critic of the current government, will find it tough because President Muhammadu Buhari’s “people” will unleash “terror and give him busy”.

Momodu, who took to his Twitter handle, also noted that Fayose will find it very difficult to fund the governorship campaign of his deputy, Kolapo Olusoji.

He also observed that the manner in which the Minister of Solid Minerals, Kayode Fayemi emerged governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was an indication that he has “some war chest” behind him.

He wrote: “I love the way we all overrate some and underrate others. Fayose will find it tough in the next few weeks.

“He will find it hard to raise funds once he’s not the one contesting. His priority will change to self preservation. He won’t spend his personal savings on anyone right now.

“The Buhari people will unleash terror on him & keep him busy. The people who are hailing him may not trust the Prof to carry on with the easy disposition & stomach infrastructure of Fayose.

“The manner Fayemi won against all his attackers shows he has some war chests behind him.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi expresses satisfaction with conduct of APC primary

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development and aspirant in Saturday’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Ekiti, Dr Kayode Fayemi has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise.

Fayemi, a former governor of the state, told newsmen in Ado-Ekiti, shortly after polling that the process was commendable.

I can see that delegates from all the local government areas cast their votes and there was no fraudulent act or riot; everything was going on smoothly.

But, I will give a comprehensive reaction at the end of the election and whoever emerges as the flag-bearer will be given maximum support from other aspirants.

As at this moment, I can say that voting has been credible,” he said.

Thirty-three aspirants were cleared by the party for the primary election, but one of them, Mr Babafemi Ojudu, withdrew on Wednesday, leaving 32 aspirants in the race.

Voting by delegates from the 16 local government areas in the state ended at about 4.15 p.m., and the Chairman of the Primary Election Commission, Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa, commended the voters for impressive turnout and conduct.

He told newsmen that he was delighted with the peace that pervaded voting and expressed optimism that entire exercise would be successful.

Speaking in an interview shortly after the voting exercise, the Chairman of the electoral committee, and Governor of Nasarawa, Alhaji Umar Al-Makura, described the exercise as peaceful and successful.

We did everything in compliance and conformity with the party’s guidelines; now that the voting is completed, we are going into sorting and this will be very transparent.

Having experienced the first task last week, I met with all the aspirants on Friday and they all assured that the exercise will be peaceful, that they are not ready to take anything for granted.

You could see the commitment and passion in the aspirants; they all lived to their promise and that is the result of the peace we recorded today,” he said.

Ekiti APC crisis deepens as angry Fayemi walked out on Tinubu, Akande, others

There are strong indications that the meeting organised by national leaders of the All Progressives Congress to find a common ground on the way forward after the botched Ekiti State APC governorship primaries has hit a brick wall.

Kayode Fayemi, minister of mines and steel, walked out of the meeting which Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and some party leaders held with the governorship aspirants of the APC in Ekiti state, on Tuesday, TheCable authoritatively reports.

Recall that TheNewsGuru reported yesterday that the meeting which took place at the Lagos state government house in Asokoro, Abuja comes just as the APC announced a new date for its botched primary in Ekiti to elect is flag bearer for the July 12 governorship election.

The first primary, held on Saturday, was halted following violence at the venue as some aspirants accused the organisers of bias. May 11 has been announced as the new date for the primary.

Many of the key aspirants in Ekiti are believed to be in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting.

Mr Tinubu, though not an official of the APC, is considered by many as the leader of the party in the South-west.

Some of the key aspirants in the Ekiti election have had reasons to work with Mr Tinubu in the past.

Among the 33 APC governorship aspirants are the minister of mines, Kayode Fayemi; a presidential aide, Babefemi Ojudu; a former Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni; and a former aide to Mr Tinubu, Opeyemi Bamidele.

In the course of the meeting:

“Some of the party leaders in attendance were Bisi Akande, pioneer chairman of the party; Segun Osoba, former Ogun state governor; Niyi Adebayo, former Ekiti state governor; and Pius Akinyelure; zonal vice chairman of the APC in the south-west.

“After discussing for like two hours, they agreed on a break.

“The minister, who walked out of the room ahead of other aspirants and party leaders, ignored reporters who approached him.” TheCable.

  • Fayemi is a wicked liar, his actions truncated Ekiti APC Primary – Ojodu

Fayemi is a wicked liar, his actions truncated Ekiti APC Primary – Ojodu

Ekiti Rebirth Organisation (ERO), the campaign group of leading aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Babafemi Ojudu, has described as “wicked lies from a tormented soul,” the statement by the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, alleging that Ojudu masterminded the crisis that marred the APC primary election in Ekiti on Saturday.

ERO Director General, Chief Ranti Adebisi, said that Fayemi’s statement was nothing but “another tantrums from Fayemi whose political fortune has taken a deep slide in recent times and whose entire campaign strategy was built on lies, orchestrated violence and cheap anti-democratic tricks.”

A statement signed by Fayemi’s Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode alluded that Ojudu and another aspirant, Bimbo Daramola masterminded the violence and destruction of ballot boxes, having realised that the former governor was already in a clear lead in the four local councils that had cast their votes.

Adebisi, however, pointed out that “The entire incident that happened at the stadium was caught on camera and broadcast on National Television. We implore the security agents who made several arrests at the scene to make public the identities of the people arrested and their sponsors. I can tell you 100 percent that they have no link whatsoever to the Ojudu campaign.

Adebisi continued: “Fayemi has been the candidate threatening violence since he joined the race last month. He threatened to cripple the state if not given the party ticket. He deployed security agents to intimidate delegates even during the conduct of the primaries.

“He is the aspirant that has been avoiding democratic test of popularity, the chronology of events that culminated into the stampede at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, is known to the public, as some of them were also captured on camera. Those videos are everywhere on the social media for everybody to see.

“Clearly, if there is anyone desperate, that person is Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the stakes are high for him as a former governor who lost his seat wholesale and as wobbled as a serving Minister. It is his degree of desperation that has caused the latest show of shame in Ekiti.

“Ojudu has no reason whatsoever to want the voting disrupted since we were projected to win. But we are appealing to our delegates and supporters across the state to remain calm.

“Fayemi came late into this very contest to realise that the boat has left the shore. He is now looking for any straw to hang unto. He was shocked to realise that his much advertised hold on the state executive was a fluke.

He was shocked that Ojudu was coasting home with a landslide so he has to haphazardly change from one rigging strategy to the other but Ekiti people are not fools.”

“We don’t support violence, our campaign does not use thugs. We don’t use self-help. However, Ekiti people have made the statement loud and clear that they no longer want Fayemi. We are sure of our support base. If this election is conducted ten times Ojudu will win,” Adebisi concluded.
