Democracy died in 2015 when Buhari became president – Fayose

Former Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused President Muhamnadu Buhari of ‘strangulating’ the ideals and ethos of democratic governance in the country, declaring that democracy will only thrive when the APC-led federal government leaves office.

Fayose said that there was nothing to celebrate as gains of democracy under Buhari’s government, saying it was painful that “legacy of free, fair and transparent elections bequeathed to Nigeria by the PDP government has been destroyed, with elections in the country now being held at gun point.”

In a statement by his media aide Lere Olayinka on Friday in Ado-Ekiti, the former governor, who berated the APC-led federal government for its alleged open display of contempt for free, fair and transparent election, said peace and socio-economic development can only be achieved, when leaders earn legitimacy through the ballot,

He said; “Democracy will return to Nigeria again after President Buhari’s tenure. Today, there is no democracy to celebrate and I have not stopped wondering how we got here in Nigeria.

“I am sure Nigerians will still recall that I warned them in 2015. The people mourn when the wicked are in authority while they rejoice when the righteous are in leadership. Today, Nigerians are mourning.

“Nevertheless, we must all keep hope alive because after darkness, there will definitely be light,” he added.

  • Alleged Misappropriation: Ekiti Assembly concludes plan to invite Fayose over N10bn supplementary budget

The Ekiti State House of Assembly says it will invite former Governor Ayodele at the appropriate time to make clarifications on some financial dealings he undertook during his reign in the state.

The Assembly clarified that a committee has been set up to discuss the issue of invitation to Fayose and that the summons will be extended to the former governor at the right time.

An invitation to Fayose on the passage of N10 billion supplementary budget, 30 days to his exit on October 15, 2018, was discussed on the floor of the House last year, a move which prompted the former governor storming the Assembly complex uninvited in December 2019, to clarify issues, but he was resisted.

The Assembly also disclosed that the All Progressives Congress(APC) dominated legislature, has passed 19 out of 25 bills presented before it by the executive in the last one year.

The Assembly also passed a motion mandating the executive to rename Ekiti State Civic Centre, still under construction as the John Kayode Fayemi Cultural Centre in honour of Governor Kayode Fayemi for his unwavering dedication to the service of Ekiti people.

The motion was moved by a lawmaker representing Moba 1, Hon. Adeyemi Ajibade and seconded by his colleague from Ikole II, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye and adopted by the whole house.

At a press conference after the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Afuye, the Chairman House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Yemisi Ayokunle said Fayose had not been formally invited by the Assembly.

“We didn’t invite him but we were about discussing his issue when he came in here as a meddlesome interloper.

“There was a committee in place already deliberating on his issue. We are not in a hurry and when the time comes, we will give an update about his invitation to the public”.

The lawmaker praised Fayemi for putting up structures that facilitate robust executive-legislature smooth operation in the state, describing him as worthy of being immortalised.

“The motion moved on the renaming of the civic centre after Governor Fayemi speaks for itself and once all the lawmakers have agreed through a voice vote, we are going to pass our resolution across to the executive to effect this change.

Ayokunle stated that the already passed and assented bills were those that had smoothened governance for the executive and increased democratic dividends to the people.

The lawmaker added that the Assembly has been thorough in the discharge of its oversight functions across Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government as well as local governments to ensure financial probity.

He added that six other bills are at different stages of legislative procedure and will be passed soon for executive assent.

“17 motions were passed into resolutions and it involved those that were executed by the executive to address emergency situations that will be for the benefit of all citizens”.

  • Fayose rented out own apartment to Ekiti, collected N120m – Fayemi

Fayose rented out own apartment to Ekiti, collected N120m – Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has alleged that his immediate predecessor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose leased his personal apartment in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to the state and collected N120 million for a period of four years.

Fayemi, Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), also alleged that Fayose illegally sold the official land acquired by the state’s first civilian governor, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo for the building of the state lodge in Abuja.

He made these allegations in a statement his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Mr. Segun Dipe issued yesterday, denying claims that Fayemi had sold the state lodge in the FCT.

The PDP had in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Diran Odeyemi accused Fayemi of selling the building to an unnamed investor, which he described as financial recklessness and misgovernance.

Faulting the claims of Ekiti PDP, Fayemi denied the allegation that his administration had sold off the Ekiti State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

He, thus, clarified that his administration was just carrying out reconstruction of the lodge having been allegedly abandoned throughout the administration of Fayose and became rickety.

He said: “Lest the critics have forgotten, Fayemi is not like Fayose who shrewdly rented his personal apartment located in the same Asokoro axis to the state for his own use in Abuja, at a cost of N30 million with N3 million agency fee per year, amounting to N120 million (plus N12 million agency fees) in four years.

“The same Fayose illegally disposed off the official land acquired by the first civilian governor, Adebayo for the building of the lodge. Up till now, the lodge has remained in private hands and the Fayemi administration is the one trying to take possession of the land in the name of Ekiti State.”

In the day-to-day exercise of administrative powers, the governor noted that circumspection “is required. This is what separates the current administration of Dr. Kayode Fayemi from that of its PDP predecessor

“It is actually not for the pained PDP to dictate what the priority of an APC administration should be, rather it is the business of the administration of Dr. Fayemi to prioritise projects, in so far as it is properly communicated to the people.

“The Fayemi administration has kept faith with workers in the way the PDP could not. If reconstruction of the dilapidated lodge in Abuja is deemed a priority, and for as long as it does not interfere with the meeting of other necessary obligations, then, it should be left for the government to decide.”

Fayemi said the current position he holds as the chairman of the Nigeria’s Governors Forum had made him a regular caller in Abuja than any past governor.

He said: “There was hardly any week he did not visit Abuja before the Covid-19. Unlike Fayose, Fayemi would rather stay in his private residence at no cost to the state.

“If Fayemi were a Fayose, he would have rented his personal house to the state and collected huge rent or better still, lodge in presidential suites in hotels. He has refused to do any of these.

“Due process is not just about how humans are legally treated, but also how resources are judiciously deployed. When a leader makes due process his watchword like Fayemi has done, both his dealings with humans and utilisation of resources would be self-moderated and such leader would have nothing to fear.”

Fayemi told the opposition and those he branded as “ill-informed propagandists” to savour the freedom of information law of the state to investigate these facts, instead on embarking on a wild goose chase.

He added that the same property was purchased during the Segun Oni era from a co-PDP governor of Osun State at the time, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

According to him, it was not so good for habitation since the roof was leaking. This made Fayose to totally abandon it and thus make it become much worse.

Due to his twin style of good governance and due process, Fayemi said he had to order the demolition of the building because it was found to be structurally weak and dangerous for habitation after it was criminally abandoned for four years by the administration of Fayose.

He said: “This was adequately provided for in both the 2019 and 2020 Budgets and this is available on the internet for anyone’s perusal. It was well advertised, bid for and duly awarded.

“If the opposition PDP is still agonising as to whether due process has been followed or not, that it enjoys the freedom to approach the court being part of their democratic right.”

  • Olujimi declares inauguration of Fayose’s Loyalists as Ekiti PDP Ward Excos Illegal

Olujimi declares inauguration of Fayose’s Loyalists as Ekiti PDP Ward Excos Illegal

A section of the Ekiti State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party loyal to Senator Biodun Olujimi has faulted the inauguration of the ward executives of the party in the state without following due process.

Olujimi said the state leadership of the party has taken definite position on the controversy surrounding the conduct of the ward Congress in Ekiti, by swearing-in the authentic ward leaders on Friday, may 1, in line with court’s pronouncement and party’s constitution.

The Senator thereby described the inauguration done by Fayose on April 30 as illegal, null and void.

The party, had in March conducted two congresses in Ekiti, with former Governor Ayodele Fayose group laying claim to victory for his faction while Olujimi had insisted that it was the Congress conducted by her faction that must be recognised.

A statement by one Engr. Alaba Agboola, Chairman, Ekiti PDP Repositioning Movement, on behalf of Senator Olujimi urged the party members to discountenance the said inauguration.

Olujimi insisted that the group inaugurted by Gboyega Oguntuase- led State Working Committee of the party was the authentic ward executive of the party in Ekiti.

“Our attention has been drawn to a purported inauguration of Ward Executives in Ekiti state on 30th April ,2020 by one Barrister Niyi Idowu who is based in Lagos and not a member of our party, PDP.

“We wish to state categorically that no such inauguration ever took place in Ekiti State and we stand solidly by the position of the State Executive Committee of the Party as expressed by its Chairman, Gboyega Oguntuase to the effect that the said purported inauguration has no basis in law and fact should be disregarded.

“Our people should learn lessons from the pronouncement of our Courts to the effect that only the State organ of a Party can inaugurate its local chapters.

“This is the extant position of the law as pronounced by a High Court in Calabar just a few days ago.

“The true position of events in Ekiti State is that only the Ward Executives elected on 7th March 2020 conducted by the PDP and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission, and security agencies in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and Section 85 and 86 of the Electoral Act remain authentic and have assumed to work as from 1st May 2020.

“As the tenure of the last Ward Executive ended at 12 midnight on 30th April 2020, the tenure of the authentic Ward Executives begins from today and they have been duly inaugurated and begun to function”.

Olujimi charged the new ward executives to carry every member of the party along in decision making and embark on aggressive mobilization of all factions in their various Wards to building a united, cohesive and well grounded PDP in Ekiti.

Olujimi therefore directed the new Ward Executives to begin to hold their meetings in line with government directives as it concerns COVID-19 pandemic.

“The authentic list of the Ward Executives in Ekiti State shall be published in due course. We congratulate them and wish them a successful tenure in office”, she said.

  • Fayose undergoes voluntary COVID-19 test after returning from overseas, announces result

Former governor of Ekiti, Ayo Fayose, said on Thursday that he had undergone voluntary testing for the coronavirus and had turned out negative.

Fayose, in a statement issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, said he was delighted to be adjudged free of the virus and asked more Nigerians to go for test while praying for victims.

” I took a Covid-19 test yesterday because of my percieved exposure in the last two weeks, I just got the result which is negative

” Notwithstanding, I will remain indoor like other Nigerians and I encourage more people to go for the test and remain at home in line with government directive,” Fayose was quoted as saying.

A former Deputy Governor in the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, also urged every Nigerian to pray against the pandemic.

“Prayer changes things. Ernest prayers will change our situation for the better.

” Genuine prayers can solve numerous challenges and deliver us from noisome pestilence outbreaks such as the deadly coronavirus disease.

“ The word of God holds that, if His people who are called by His name will humble themselves and pray fervently, He will hear from heaven and heal their land

” The Lord is still in the business of hearing prayers. He will hear ours, and in the fullness of time, will heal our land.” he said in a statement.

He urged Nigerian leaders to show commitment to the welfare of the people and continue to seek the intervention of God in the affairs of the nation.

Olusola-Eleka urged government take sincere and proactive steps that would ensure efficient and effective health management systems capable of handling and managing current challenges.

He also appealed to the people of Ekiti to avoid staying in overcrowded areas while obeying all directives to fight the pandemic

  • Fayose speaks on dumping PDP for APC

Fayose speaks on dumping PDP for APC

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has denied contemplating dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mr Lere Olayinka, his media aide, said this in a statement in Ado Ekiti, on Friday.

Olayinka, explained that the claim in some quarters that Fayose had concluded arrangements to embrace the All Progressives Congress (APC), was false.

“Someone of the status and pedigree of Fayose can never join APC,” he said.

He said, a statement purportedly made by the state chapter of APC to the effect that Fayose was not qualified to join the party, was therefore unthinkable and mischievous.

“It is funny that APC lied about Fayose coming to join the party and also went further to react to its own lies,” he said.

He admonished the party to focus its attention on how to lift the state to economic greatness and stop further job losses.

  • Alleged N2.2bn fraud: Court rejects Fayose’s move to stop EFCC’s witness against him

The Federal High Court in Lagos has rejected move by ex-Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, and a firm, Spotless Investment Ltd to stop a banker from testifying against him in his N2.2bn fraud trial.

According to Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, Fayose’s application lacked merit, saying that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) could field one banker – Mr Johnson Abidakun, as its witness against the former governor.

Abidakun will testify in place of a bullion van driver, Adewale Aladegbola, who testified when the case was before another judge.

The EFCC, on January 16 alleged that Fayose secretly compromised the bullion van driver, hence, its decision to drop him and use Abidakun as a replacement.

However, Fayose and Spotless Investment had, through his lawyers, Messrs Ola Olanipekun (SAN) and Olalekan Ojo (SAN), filed an interlocutory summons in objection to the EFCC’s move to change witness.

The defence counsel contended that allowing a change of witness was an abuse of court processes by the prosecution.

But the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), maintained that the EFCC was at liberty to replace Aladegbola with Abidakun since the case was starting afresh before Justice Aneke, after it was transferred from Justice Mojisola Olatoregun (retd.), before whom Aladegbola testified.

In a short ruling Monday, Justice Aneke upheld the prosecution’s application.

The judge held, “This is a fresh trial, the parties are at liberty to call any witness that they desire in proof of their case. As a result, the defendants/applicants’ interlocutory summons is dismissed for lack of merit.”

He adjourned till May 5 and 6 for continuation of trial.

  • PDP sacks Fayose’s loyalists

The internal crisis rocking the Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened on Monday as the party hierarchy sacked a die-hard loyalist of former governor Ayodele Fayose, Mr. Dare Olomofe.

The party also suspended two ward chairmen, Messrs Remigious Ogunmoriye and Tope Makanjuola, for allegedly conducting elections to fill vacancies in their wards without authorisation from the State Working Committee.

The PDP in the state has for some time been polarised over the leadership issue between Fayose and Senator Biodun Olujimi, with the party State Working Committee divided.

Olomofe, who was the party’s acting chairman of Ado Local Government, was removed from office for alleged involvement in anti-party activities capable of sinking the PDP.

According to a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, Olomofe was appointed by the State Working Committee, led by its state Chairman, Gbogega Oguntuase, to act in the place of the Chairman of the party, Mr. Akintunde Osadeyi, who had been suspended from the party.

Adebayo added: “The State Executive Committee, after considering the report of the committee set up to review the suspension of Mr. Akintunde Osadeyi, he was reinstated to his office as the substantive chairman of PDP, Ado-Ekiti Local Government.”

Ogunmoriye and Makanjuola, according to Adebayo, were given three months suspension, in line with Section 58(1) of the constitution of the party, while their vice chairmen would act in acting capacity pending the expiration of the punishment.

Adebayo appealed to members of the party to respect the constitution of the PDP and the leaders for internal cohesion that would position the party to reclaim Ekiti in 2023.
