Abuja FMC: Health experts react over viral negligence video

Health experts and civil society leaders have called for a transparent, independent investigation and urgent reforms at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja.

The experts, spoke in separate interviews on Monday in Abuja, were responding to a viral video allegedly depicting staff negligence at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Abuja FMC.

The video showed hospital staff reluctant to attend to an accident victim, citing lack of gloves and inadequate manpower to lift him from a car to a waiting wheelchair.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako has, however, directed a full investigation into the incident.

The hospital management said that preliminary findings revealed that contrary to the claims in the video, medical consumables such as gloves, patient transfer equipment, and medications were adequately available at the time.

Mr Obadiah Gana, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, who made the clarification in a statement, said that Salako had directed a full investigation of the incident which is ongoing.

Gana said that findings would be made public.

He said that patient feedback was welcomed through various channels, including QR codes and contact lines posted throughout the facility.

He also highlighted the hospital’s indigent fund initiative and commitment to treating unconscious patients without delay.

“We apologise for any distress or discomfort caused and want to assure you that we take feedback seriously,” he said.

Reacting to the development, health experts have urged authorities to treat the incident, not as an isolated case, but as a reflection of deeper structural and cultural challenges in emergency care delivery in Nigeria.

Dr Chinyere Nwosu, a public health policy analyst, told NAN;” We commend the minister for his swift response. However, it is not enough to rely solely on internal findings.

“An independent, multi-stakeholder panel should be constituted to investigate this transparently.”

Nwosu said that while the hospital had notable achievements, including advanced procedures like heart and kidney surgeries, such negligence undermines public trust and casts a shadow over these successes.

“This is a chance to fix a broken link in our healthcare delivery. Emergency care must be swift, compassionate and non-negotiable. No one should die because of hesitation or poor coordination,” she said.

Akin Ogundele, a health rights advocate, also told NAN that one act of negligence in an emergency setting can erase years of goodwill.

Ogubdele said that this was not about condemning a hospital, but about ensuring a culture of responsiveness, empathy, and professionalism.

Civil society leaders also called on FMC Abuja and other tertiary hospitals to reinforce staff training on patient-centred emergency response.

According to them, equipment and protocols are ineffective without a responsive human element.

Mohammed Usman, Founder of the Lafiya Wealth Initiative, said that the incident exposed the need for systemic reforms.

Usman said that it is not just about the availability of gloves or trolleys, but the readiness of staff to act in moments that could mean life or death

He urged the Federal Ministry of Health to introduce standardised national emergency response protocols across all tertiary health institutions.

He also called for stronger feedback and whistleblower protection mechanisms for patients and health workers alike.

Dr Jubril Ismail, Board Chairman of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), said that the agency plays a crucial role in ensuring that lives were saved in traffic accidents, emergencies and other critical situations.

Ismail said that the nation had made significant strides in emergency response, with strong support in recent months ensuring effective service delivery.

Dr Aisha Lawal, Health Policy Analyst, said that the unfortunate incident in Abuja showed that while NEMSAS exists on paper, it was not yet fully functional where it mattered most, at the point of care.

Lawal said that a system designed to save lives should not fail due to avoidable excuses like lack of gloves or manpower, describing it as a wake-up call for operational accountability.

She said that the fact that accident victims were still dying at hospital gates despite NEMSAS raised serious questions about implementation, oversight and staff responsiveness.

“We need real-time monitoring and enforcement to ensure that policies translate into action, especially during emergencies,” She said

As Nigerians await the outcome of the ongoing investigation, health stakeholders suggest that the incident should serve as a wake-up call to prioritise patient dignity and ethical responsibility across the country’s healthcare system.

FMC Abuja investigates viral emergency response video

The management of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja has announced the commencement of an investigation into an incident captured in a viral video regarding its emergency response.

This is disclosed in a statement signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Obadiah Gana, on Sunday in Abuja.

Gana revealed that the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, had directed a full investigation into the matter. He added that the inquiry was currently ongoing.

“We have been made aware of an online video that negatively depicts our hospital. In response, we have initiated a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding this incident.

“Findings of the investigation will be made available to the public,” he said.

He said preliminary findings indicated that the emergency department had an adequate supply of medical consumables, including latex gloves, contrary to the claims made in the video.

Additionally, he said that resuscitation equipment and medications were sufficient.

“There was no shortage of patient transfer equipment, including trolleys and wheelchairs. Interaction with staff on duty and other stakeholders is currently ongoing,” Gana added.

He apologised for any distress or discomfort caused and assured that the hospital takes feedback seriously and maintains an open-door policy.

“We have multiple patient feedback channels available, including several phone numbers displayed throughout the hospital, QR codes, and email contacts.

“In addition, we run a medical indigent fund to assist underprivileged patients with hospital bills.

“We have successfully treated numerous unconscious patients and safely reunited them with their relatives with the help of our social workers.”

He also highlighted that FMC Abuja was a centre for specialised procedures such as open-heart surgery, laser surgery, kidney transplants, spine surgery, and other advanced treatments rarely available in most public hospitals.

Gana ended by emphasising the hospital’s commitment to quality care delivered with empathy and compassion, reiterating ongoing efforts to improve service quality.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has assured residents that security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the safety of lives and properties during the Eid-el-Kabir holidays and beyond.

Wike made the statement in his Eid-el-Kabir message to FCT residents in Abuja on Thursday.

He emphasised that the FCT Administration would continue to maintain close collaboration with security operatives to keep Abuja safe and secure.

“I am proud to say that Abuja remains the safest city in the country, and we are doing everything possible to keep it that way.

“As we gather with family and friends in celebration, let us not forget the less privileged among us. Let the spirit of Eid inspire us to share, uplift, and show kindness to those in need.

“As you join millions around the world to celebrate this sacred occasion, we are reminded of the profound values embodied in Eid-el-Kabir, sacrifice, obedience, and unwavering faith, as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim,” he said.

The minister urged residents to reflect on the deeper meaning of submission to the will of Allah and to recommit themselves to compassion, generosity, and unity.

According to him, the celebration is not only a spiritual milestone but also a time to renew the collective commitment to peace, tolerance, and mutual respect.

He commended the Muslim community in the FCT for their enduring contributions to the growth and peaceful coexistence within the territory.

“Your values and sense of community are integral to our shared progress,” he added.

The minister also noted that President Bola Tinubu, through his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” had been working tirelessly to ease the burdens faced by the people.

He highlighted the commendable progress made by the FCT Administration in infrastructure development, security enhancement, and social welfare interventions.

“These efforts are all aimed at improving the quality of life for every resident of the FCT. We owe the rapid development of the FCT to the unwavering support President Tinubu has given to the FCTA.

“Therefore, I urge you to use this occasion to pray that the Almighty grants Tinubu good health and more guidance to lead the nation to greater heights.

Eid-el-Kabir: CP orders visibility policing, intelligence-led raids in FCT

The Commissioner Police (CP) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Ajao Adewale, has ordered heightened visibility policing and sustained intelligence-led raids on black spots ahead of the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT, SP Josephine Adeh,  disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

Adeh said that the CP gave the order during a strategic security meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of Tactical Teams in the command.

Adewale said the meeting was to ensure a safe and secured FCT ahead of the forthcoming Inspector General of Police (I-G) Award Night, the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and the June 12 Democracy Day commemoration.

He said the focus of the meeting was to fine-tune operational deployments, reinforcement of professionalism and accountability in policing efforts during the period.

“You must strengthen security within your respective Areas of Responsibility (AORs) and ensure heightened visibility policing, particularly at all strategic entry and exit points into the city.

“This is in anticipation of the arrival of very senior police officers and other dignitaries from across the country for the I-G’s event,”he said.

The CP ordered the deployment of Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams to sweep worship and recreational centres ahead of expected events.

He directed the senior police officers to sustain intelligence-led raids on identified black spots known for illicit drug activities in a professional manner, devoid of abuse.

The CP warned the officers against any form of extortion and urged the officers to be smartly dressed, disciplined, and courteous in their interactions with the public.

“You must not be involved in civil disputes, particularly land-related matters and your continuous raids on identified spots must not serve as a cover for harassment or illegal financial demands.

“You must reinforce the standing order that bail is free; any officer found requesting money for bail will be dealt with in accordance with established disciplinary procedures,”the CP said.

He ordered the DPOs to ensure strict supervision and accountability of all personnel under their command, adding that searching of mobile phones without appropriate legal authority was prohibited.

The CP ordered all officers to be camera-friendly, approachable, and uphold the image of the force and ensure swift and efficient response to distress calls.

He ordered crackdown on vehicles bearing fake or fraudulently acquired diplomatic number plates and urged the DPOs to initiate youth engagement programme.

Adewale said the idea was to foster close collaboration with local communities to promote community policing and crime prevention.

  • Partial water scarcity hits FCT; Wike gives reason

Partial water scarcity hits FCT; Wike gives reason

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says the disruption of water supply in Abuja city and some satellite towns is due to the ongoing major rehabilitation of two treatment plants.

Wike disclosed this in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr Lere Olayinka, in Abuja on Sunday.

He said that the treatment plants were among the four facilities responsible for the production and supply of water to FCT residents.

The minister said that due to the ongoing rehabilitation of the plants, water supply from the two functioning treatment plants would be rationed for a period of two weeks.

“What is being experienced is a partial and not a total shutdown of the entire water supply to the residents of FCT, as two of the water treatment plants are still in operation.

“SCC Nigeria Ltd. is, however, working 24/7 to ensure that the rehabilitation are concluded before the scheduled time.

“Residents are, therefore, urged to store enough water to cater for their needs during this period, as supply will be rationed,’’ he said.

Wike appealed to the residents to bear with the FCT Administration, assuring that the rehabilitation, when completed, would improve water supply in the FCT.

He, however, said that the two plants undergoing rehabilitation would be temporarily powered to supply water to residents during Sallah celebrations.

“The FCT Water Board operates four water treatment plants of 30,000m3/hour, which are divided into Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4.

“As a result of the inefficiency of the plants, which are currently producing below their installed capacity, a contract was awarded for their rehabilitation to Messrs SCC Nigeria Ltd.

“The rehabilitation works have reached an advanced stage on Phases 1 and 2 where the electro-mechanical equipment, which is the prime mover of the treatment plants, are to be replaced and reinstalled.

“This warranted a total shutdown of the two plants, which are interconnected.

“However, phases 3 and 4 water treatment plants are operational but won’t sustain, meet or cater for the demands of the populace,” he said.

Wike said that the Water Board had made a rationing time-table by alternating between lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network.

This, according to him, will minimise the adverse effects of inadequate water supply to FCT residents.

  • Forced religious indoctrination in FCT schools false – FCTA

Forced religious indoctrination in FCT schools false – FCTA

The Education Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has refuted the claim that students in FCT schools were being indoctrinated into a particular religion against their wishes.

Malam Kabiru Musa, Head, Information and Public Relation Unit of the secretariat made the rebuttal in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an unidentified teacher had released a voice note, claiming that some students in FCT schools were being forced to accept another religion against their wish.

Musa said that the voice note recorded in Hausa language, linking FCT schools to religious indoctrination was misleading and malicious.

He said that investigations had revealed that the areas and school locations mentioned in the voice note were not in the FCT, but Mararaba in Nasarawa, a neighbouring state.

He identified the schools mentioned in the audio as Government Secondary School (GSS) Mararaba, GSS Bakin Ado, GSS Kurunduma and Aunty Alice School.

“We wish to irrevocably and categorically state that the claims in the said audio are false, baseless, and deliberately misleading.

“Let it be clearly stated that such divisive and harmful narratives aimed at destabilising our education system and creating religious tension will not be tolerated.

“The FCTA reserves the right to take legal and administrative action against individuals or groups propagating such falsehoods against its schools or territory.

“We urge the public, media, and stakeholders to disregard the viral voice note in its entirety and to rely only on verified information from official FCTA sources,” he said.

The head of the information unit stressed that FCT Schools were strictly secular institutions, where students practising different religions coexist peacefully.

He added that the FCT Administration guarantees the freedom of worship and upholds the rights of every child to learn in an environment free from religious discrimination or compulsion.

“Our teachers and school administrators are highly trained professionals who operate strictly within the bounds of professional ethics and codes of conduct.

“They are dedicated to nurturing students into disciplined, responsible citizens without bias or prejudice,” he said.

Musa further said that the education sector was undergoing transformation under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike-led FCTA, with ongoing massive renovation, reconstruction, and accelerated rehabilitation of schools across the FCT.

This, he said, was in addition to the provision of infrastructure and information and communication technology facilities in FCT schools across the six area councils.

He added that the FCT Education Secretariat, under Dr Danlami Hayyo, the Mandate Secretary, was implementing a robust monitoring and feedback mechanism.

According to him, the measure is to ensure that FCT schools remain centres of excellence, discipline, and inclusiveness.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says plans have been concluded to introduce reforms in the FCT transportation sector to improve safety and comfort.

Wike said this in Abuja on Friday, after he inspected the completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals in preparation for inauguration to celebrate President Bola Tinubu second year in office.

The minister also inspected the completed access road to Giri District, which is also ready for inauguration.

Wike said that there would be a lot of reforms, adding that a lot of things would happen in the transportation sector in the FCT.

He said that a committee was already working on the reforms, which would be ready before the bus and taxi terminals would be inaugurated.

“Obviously a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms

“Because as part of security measures, we must know those involved in taxi business and what colour to use, so that if anything happens, we will be able to identify them.

“Just be assured that we are doing everything possible to strengthen our transportation system,” he said.

The minister added that the FCT Administration was working to remove a lot of motor parks on the road.

Speaking of the quality of the project, Wike expressed satisfaction with the delivery of the project, adding however, that he has pointed out some areas that needs to be corrected.

He commended the contractor, which he said had done his best, and promised to continue to support local contractors to give the best to Nigerians.

The Kugbo and Mabushi and Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminals were constructed as part of efforts to improve the transportation system in the FCT.

While that of Kugbo and Mabushi terminals were ready for inauguration, the one at central area is under construction.

The minister also revealed that two additional terminals would be constructed, one each in Bwari and Gwagwalada.

  • NSCDC seals illegal private guard firms in Abuja

NSCDC seals illegal private guard firms in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command has sealed seven Private Guard Companies (PGCs) for operating illegally in the territory.

The defaulting PGCs were sealed by the  FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu during an operational tour on Wednesday in Abuja.

It was revealed that the seven PGCs sealed are CEWARA Security in Wuse 2, Most Bright Security, Security China and Ebowise Security in Jabi.

Others are: Barumark Security in Wuye, Segad Security Protection Services in Prince and Princess Estate and Prixair security.

Odumosu said that from the seven sealed PGCs, six were sealed for operating without license while one for operating with an expired licence.

He further said that they were sealed for offences ranging from insignia, threat to national security and public interest,  employment of guards without approval and refusal to be subjected to licensing authority.

He stated that according to the laws guiding the establishment of PGCs in Nigeria, non-indigenous security organisations were prohibited.

“As the regulatory agency, there is a need to ensure compliance because according to the provision of the law, before you can operate a PGC, aside from registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), you must also apply for a licence through NSCDC.”

The commandant said that the sealing was to ensure internal security in the FCT.

He further attributed some of the kidnap cases and insecurities in the territory to the non profiling of security guards.

“Some of these operators of PGCs don’t understand the implications of their actions to national security.

“Many of them sew uniforms for random people without having valuable background information about their staff,” he said.

He said that the corps will continue to carry out routine operations to seal defaulting PGCs to serve as deterrent.
