”In the meantime, the administration has given the striking doctors 24 hours to resume work, after which they should consider themselves as having exited the FCT administration,” she said.

Aliyu, however, expressed the appreciation of the FCT administration for the commitment and dedication to duty of the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria, nurses and midwives, medical laboratory technologists, pharmacists and other medical and health workers, who remained true to their calling by putting social needs above self.

“Apart from the fact that water is being wasted, the same water spread on roads thereby leading to flooding which spoils infrastructure in the city.

” We want to ensure that the FCT does not become a safe haven to beggars that may be coming from other states that have banned street begging,” he said.

Ohaa stressed the need for continuous synergy amongst security agencies for effective performance.

He attributed the improved security situation to the fact that security agencies had intensified their crackdown on criminals in the territory.

“All the security agencies resolved that they will work in synergy to make sure that they tackle the menace of insecurity in the city,” Ohaa said.

He said that the reduction in violent crimes like kidnapping and armed robbery as well as improved compliance with traffic regulations was as a result of the improved synergy among security agencies.

Ohaa called on FCT residents to help improve security by always furnishing security operatives with necessary information that would help them in the proper discharge of their duties.

He pledged the continuous support of the FCTA to security agencies in the FCT with the provision of logistic assistance for their operations.

He explained that the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Malam Umar Jubrin, acting on the minister’s directive, mandated some engineers to ensure that the traffic team’s request was fully carried out.

“After over two months of study of the situation during peak periods, we discovered that the major cause of traffic gridlock on the Kubwa expressway is the Gwarimpa U-turn located close to the Charley-boy route.

“We have tried to manage the situation for several weeks through the Federal Road Safety Corps by putting men and vehicles on the ground during peak periods.

“This yielded very little result as the traffic bottleneck is caused by those negotiating at the U-turn.

“This is a tough decision particularly as it will affect those entering Gwarimpa from the expressway, but we must not shy away from addressing the plight of millions plying the other northern expressway (Kubwa road),’’ he said.

He said that motorists would have to use the EFAB Metropolis interchange (flyover), to connect with the service lane that leads to Gwarimpa Housing Estate.

According to Attah, while the engineers will seal up the U-turn, officials of the Federal Road Safety corps would be on ground to direct motorists and ensure the work is done without disruption.

The Minister who was represented by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, stressed the value of education in nation building, noting that education is the bedrock of modern societies and the foundation on which great nations are built.

Bello, used the occasion to charge education board to manage it effectively and efficiently so it remains a model school and a standard on which other public institutions in the FCT will be measured.

He also noted that the Nigeria/Korea model school is today one of the most sought-after basic education institutions in the Federal Capital Territory, just as he commended the government and people of the Republic of Korea, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for bringing this project to fruition.

Bello promised that the Administration will expedite construction of the senior secondary component of the school and ensure that it is as aesthetically appealing and academically enriching as its model basic education counterpart.

“Here in the FCT, we have long recognised the capacity of education as providing the most viable route towards the attainment of our nation’s growth objectives. Therefore, the development of the education sector will be given priority in our growth agenda.

“This will involve establishment of new schools, rehabilitation of existing ones, recruitment of teaching staff and of course the training and retaining teachers to keep them abreast of current teaching methods,” he affirmed.

In her remarks, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, who was represented by the Director of Administration and Finance of the FCT Education Secretariat, Malam Umar Marafa, stated that the school will no doubt raise the quality of learning and ultimately the quality of life of children in territory.

“It is on record that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in February, 1980, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Korea have progressively fostered closer and cordial relationship. This is undoubtedly another great leap in the right direction, all thanks to this laudable project by KOICA”.

She, however, appealed to KOICA to replicate this model school in the six geo-political zones across the federation, aimed at deepening the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Republic of Korea.

Aliyu affirmed that the Nigeria/Korea model school will improve students’ academic performances and build a better generation that would contribute to the development of Nigeria.

Earlier, Amb. of the Republic of Korea, Maj.-Gen. In-Tae Lee (Rtd), assured that Korea would not hesitate to continue sharing experiences and assisting Nigeria in strengthening the educational sector and national capacity.

Lee explained that the Nigeria-Korea model school was the centre of excellence for multimedia education, saying that in the future the school could be used as a teachers training centre for multimedia education in FCT.

”The multimedia equipment supplied is worth more than 1.3 US dollars and maintenance is essential to ensure the best use of these facilities. ”Today KOICA is handing over all the multimedia equipment and educational resources that have been provided by the Korean Government”.
