2018 Felabration: Foreign tourists express enthusiasm to learn more of Nigerian culture
Some Foreign tourists at the ongoing 2018 Felabration on Tuesday expressed their interest to learn more about Nigerian culture.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos that they were enticed to attend Felabration due to the love they have for Nigerian culture and the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
NAN reports that 2018 Felabration will hold from Oct.15 to Oct. 21, featuring Fela artwork competition, symposium, music concert and afrobeats dance competitions.
An Australian, Pip Ryan, said she wanted to learn more about Nigerian dance.
“The late legendary musician projected the most interesting part of Nigerian culture; this culture is fascinating and I am glad to be here to learn more of this beautiful culture,” she said.
Another Australian tourist, Joana Tyler, said late Fela, who fought against depression, was greatly admired because of his uniqueness in exhibiting the difference between wrong and right in politics.
Tyler said that Nigeria was a place to be to get entertained.
“Fela’s music, which showcased freedom, anti-corruption for all, was loved by most Australians, because of the truthfulness and spirit of oneness in his music,” she said.
Similarly, Greg Cook, an Australian, said Nigerian culture was very rich and inexhaustible, adding that the week-long event would educate him more about Nigerian culture.
“I am here purposely because of Felabration. I have been listening to Fela’s music for long and I enjoy his rhythm, lyrics and messages.
“I have been to most African countries, I love Nigeria because there is so much love in the country right from the airport,” he said.
A Canadian, Hugh Campbell, who attended Felabration with his wife, said he had been in the country since 1979.
Campbell said that no country was as resilient and welcoming like Nigeria, having stayed in the country for over 30 years.
“I am here with my wife and I really appreciate Nigerians for their dynamism and rich culture.
“Fela gave his life for the great country; he is 80 today and I wish him a happy post humors birthday,” he said. -
Listen to Fela’s music for solutions to Nigeria's problems- Femi Falana
Renowned lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), on Monday urged Nigerian presidential candidates seeking office in 2019 to listen to the music of the legendary musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s music, to get solutions proffered to the nation’s problems.
Falana gave the advice during the 2018 Felabration tagged Fela @ 80: Overtaking Overtake, at the Fela debates titled: “African Leadership in the Millennium” in Lagos.
He said that the late Fela had seen Nigeria’s problems, as he gave warning and proffered solutions to such problems in his music before his death.
Fela, who was born on Oct. 15, 1938 and died on Aug. 2, 1997, was the pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre and a human rights activist.
He composed many songs on societal ills in Nigeria and the African continent, and had many brushes with several Nigerian governments which he often criticized in his songs.
Some of such popular songs include ‘Suffering and Smiling’, ‘Authority Stealing’, ‘Zombie’, ‘Water No Get Enemy’ and ‘Lady’.
Falana said: ” I want most of these presidential aspirants to listen to Fela’s music very well where they can find solutions to most of our problems.
” Our country is rich as Fela sang in his music, but our people are still hungry and poor; you must understand our society before you can lead us.”
Falana urged young Nigerians to get organised so that the sky would be their starting point.
He said that if Nigeria could get it right, the black man all over Africa would be happy.
Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Mr Omoyele Sowore, who also spoke at the event, advised Nigerians to take charge of their destinies by voting rightly, come 2019.
Sowore said that History was important for the school curriculum, as the negative influences of the nation’s bad past leaders should be known to the younger generation.
He urged Nigerian youths who feel capable of occupying public office to indicate interest and ensure novices are not given the opportunity to rule.
Politician and legal practitioner, Eunice Atu-Ejide, who also spoke at the event, urged Nigerians to look out for virtues such as sincerity, honesty, positive character and integrity, rather than age, in choosing leaders.
“We must stop inciting violence and hatred, but focus on choosing rightly.
” Age is not a determinant if a presidential candidate will do well in the office, but the character and integrity should be considered,” she said.
The 2018 edition of Felabration, which commenced on Monday, will run through the week with performances from a myriad of African stars.
Felabration is an annual festival of music and arts commemorating the life and times of Nigeria’s foremost musical icon, the late Fela Anikulakpo Kuti.
The idea and concept of Felabration as an annual celebration of Fela’s music, life and times, originated from his eldest child Yeni who conceived it in 1998.

Felabration 2018: Soyinka urges youths to prepare for politics
Revered Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on youths to prepare themselves for political leadership in the future, adding that there is need for them to distinguish between rhetoric and politics.
Soyinka made this known yesterday in Lagos during the 2018 Felabration Senior Secondary Schools Debate organised by the Felabration Committee with the theme: ‘State Police: To or Not to be.’
He also stated that their presentations were evidence that there is collection of promising politicians in the country, adding that the presentations from the students were stimulating.
The activist tasked the students to be good speakers for all occasions, adding that if they aspire to go in politics, they should be prepared seriously.
“You have to distinguish between rhetoric and politics. If you want to get into politics, be prepared for some very rough times. Do not think that because you can speak very beautifully, you can be a politician. This qualifies what I said earlier.
“I think you have been listening to some really stimulating speeches, if what I just heard is an example of what of has been going on, then I can only regret that you didn’t invite me to participate with one of you from the beginning to the end. Not that I will not have the time, but I would tried to steal a few moment from my work just to listen to more of the kind of inspiring speeches I heard this morning. I congratulate all of you and I wish you well and success.”
At the end of the debate contest in which 10 schools partook, Rainbow College emerged the winner and the school was presented with a new HP laptop and keyboard.

Felabration: Afrobeat enthusiasts to converge for Fela’s 80th posthumous birthday
Devotees of Afrobeat will on Monday converge as the 2018 edition of Felabration kicks off.
Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late legendary musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti, noted that hundreds of Afrobeat enthusiasts from four continents will attend the festival billed to take place between October 15 and 21.
Kuti made this known on Wednesday during the Felabration secondary schools debate on state police at Freedom Park, Lagos.
According to Kuti, the theme for 2018 Felabration is ‘Baba@80; Overtaking Overtake’, a line coined from Fela’s 1990 hit ‘Overtake Don Overtake Overtake’.
She said no foreign artiste was invited this year due to lack of funds and minimal sponsors.
“This year’s edition will be a great one as we have international delegates from Asia, America, Australia and will all mingle with peace-loving and accommodating Nigerians,” Kuti said.
“We won’t have foreign artistes like last year but we have musical bands from Togo, France and more, a whole lot of activities loaded within the week for everyone.”
She said Felabration serves as a means of reminding the Nigerian government of Fela’s messages to the government while alive.
“Felabration serves as reminder to government and the general public for those messages of Fela to sanitise all sectors of the Nigerian society,” she said.

Felabration 2017: Unmasking the Lagbaja you don’t know
The first time I saw Lagbaja perform was over nine years ago at Motherland Ikeja Lagos. So when I had another rare privilege of seeing him perform last night at Felabration grand finale, I valued it with uninhibited esteem.
When Lagbaja with his trademark mask stepped out that night, he brought back memories of some of hit songs like Konko Below, Nothing For you, among other tunes.
The crowd surged forward, screaming when he played the intro of his popular song, Nothing for you. The response was wild and intense
After his performance, I and my colleague,Rotimi Agbana made an attempt to interview the revered African entertainer. Passing through several impediments from the fierce bouncers we eventually got into the room where he was trying to pack and rearrange his saxophone and other equipments.
FEMI KUTI AND LAGBAJA The Lagbaja we saw isn’t the guy you are familiar with on stage. He is approachable, humble, soft spoken and answered his questions intelligently.
I told myself, ‘little wonder he is one of the best in Africa’

When my colleague asked him why he doesn’t make people carry his musical instruments for him, he simply said: “ Every musician should be able to carry their instruments themselves. You are the one who plays it” .
He is a total departure from the pop stars of this generation who are always with a myriad of individuals at their beck and call, like bees, attracted to honey. This is the Lagbaja you don’t know.
