Femi Adebayo laments over the rate of film piracy

Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo has lamented the rate of film piracy in Nigeria.

Adebayo took to his instagram page, @femiadebayosalami, on Tuesday, to narrate his ordeal and how he recently came out victorious in his fight against piracy on one of his movies.

He noted that the dividend of the business of filmmaking had not been maximised due to the illegal activities of movie pirates.

Adebayo said: The Nigerian film industry has experienced exponential growth over the years, but we haven’t been able to maximise the true dividends of this business because of dare devil pirates who benefit where they didn’t sow.

“This is a major reason why investors find it hard to commit their funds to filmmakers. However, through persistence and the use of the legal framework covering intellectual property, we can bring their activities to a gradual halt.

“Several times, I have been a victim of movie pirates and I never spared them. I recently concluded a legal battle with a notable media company that owns a big radio station and also engages in Youtube content distribution.

“During the cinema run of “Survival of Jelili” in 2019, my movie was gathering good numbers at that time. They decided to use my movie poster and title to promote a movie on their platform, thereby deceiving fans and diverting revenue accrued to me.

“It took 3 years, but my trust in the legal and justice system remained unwavering. With the dedication of our legal team, Bola Adebowale & Co Legal Practitioners, who are seasoned professionals with wealth of experience in handling such cases.

“They presented undeniable evidence, put up a strong argument, and took the case to trial. Their promptness, efficiency, and attention to detail played a huge part in the direction of the case. We won and were awarded a total of twenty-five five million Naira.

“This isn’t just my win as a filmmaker and content producer, but a win for all of Nollywood.”

According to him, filmmakers must be ready to fight intellectual property theft and piracy at all levels.

“Every win brings us closer to protecting and getting the true economic value of our works,” he said

Copyright infringement: Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo sues online TV

Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo, has instituted a legal action against Murfy Ben International Limited, a YouTube channel, at the Federal High Court in Ibadan over alleged copyright of his two movies.

Adebayo demanded for damages and that immediate action be taken against Murfy Ben International Limited over his two movies, titled: ‘Survival of Jelili’ and ‘Kodi Ologbon Aye’.

Adebayo had, at the commencement of trial in November 2021, testified that many Nigerians were calling him that the firm was transmitting his two films on its YouTube channel, Aforefo TV, without authorisation.

The petitioner, through his counsel, Mr Y.B. Adebowale, had alleged that Aforefo TV specialised in defrauding members of the public by using the title of newly-released movies to advertise old ones.

Adebayo further said that Murfy Ben International Limited used ‘Survival of Jelili’, the title of the film he produced in 2019, to promote ‘Kodi Ologbon-Aye’, which he released in 2015.

He stated that the company did this without his knowledge and to gain more traffic on its YouTube channel.

According to him, people log into Aforefo TV YouTube channel with the hope that they would watch ‘Survival of Jelili’, only to be disappointed to see ‘Kodi Ologbon-Aye’.

Adebayo told the court that ‘Survival of Jelili’ was still being shown in the cinema.

At the resumption of trial on Tuesday, Managing Director of the company, Mrs Igilia Ode, denied any wrongdoing.

Ode, while being led in evidence by her counsel, Mr Ezenao Chukwuemeka, tendered some documents before the court, which served as exhibits in her argument.

She also tendered the report of the police investigation on the matter in 2020.

Justice Uche Agomoh, thereafter, adjourned the case till May 19, for the continuation of trial.

“One, TAMPAN as an association never supports crime or violence in its entirety. Two, the TAMPAN constitution is built on many things, including order and mutual respect. Also, the key to us is the advancement of our talents, craft, and the continuation of our way of life.

A female fan once kissed me- Femi Adebayo

Popular actor, Femi Adebayo has recounted how he an overzealous fan kissed him. Adebayo made this known recently when he appeared on popular TV show ‘Your View’.

When asked about temptations he has faced, the filmmaker said: “I was attempting to buy something at an eatery when a fan jumped on me and gave me a kiss. It was obviously not a long kiss. I won’t have allowed it. My wife was beside me when it happened. I didn’t want to embarrass her. My wife was just quiet. At times when we are walking and some fans greet me, she tells me I didn’t greet them well”.

The award-winning actor also stated that self-discipline is needed to overcome such temptations.

“It matters a lot when you are disciplined. Your self -discipline matters a lot. Unfortunately the kind of job we do exposes us to temptation. I have been tempted on several occasions. Some fans would even try to entice you with money. I can get on a movie location and get paid N800,000 for 3 or 4 days. A fan might just come around and say, ‘Let me keep you for that 4 days and give you N5 million. My belief is that the N800,000 will make me more relevant than the N5 million that I will get for four days”, he said.
