Amorim addresses Fernandes, Garnacho exit talks

Manchester United Ruben Amorim intends to speak with Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho as speculation grows over their potential departures from Old Trafford.

Portugal international Fernandes has been linked with a £200m, three-year deal from Al-Hilal, with a one-week deadline, while Garnacho also hinted at a possible exit.

“I will speak with my players but the focus is the last game. I don’t know what is going to happen. We have a plan,” said Amorim.

We were prepared for both situations, with Champions League and without. We have an idea type of squad we want, but we still have the last game. We have time to address all these situations.

“We have this game against Villa and we need to focus on that. It is not over. We want to finish in a good way in front of our supporters.. Then, after, we will assess the squad. We know what we want to do. We will deal with that when the season is finished.

“You feel it is going to take time. It is not about (transfer) windows. Sometimes we don’t know. Things can change fast, but to reach the kind of level we need to be at Manchester United will take time. I don’t know how many windows or years we need to reach that point, but we can improve, that is clear.”

Beckham backs Amorim, warns Man Utd not to sell Fernandes

Manchester United legend David Beckham has expressed his support for Ruben Amorim to succeed at Old Trafford.

Despite appointing him as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November, the Red Devils’ struggles have continued, and they currently sit 16th in the Premier League.

However, the former England captain has urged United to give Amorim time to implement his playing style.

“I think Ruben definitely needs to be backed in bringing in the players he wants but I actually don’t know how possible it is,” Beckham told The Athletic.

“I don’t speak to Jim Ratcliffe that often, only from time to time.

“Ruben needs to be backed as a manager to bring in his team and his philosophy; he’s trying that already but I think once he brings his team in and his players, then you’ll see something different.

“I’d like to think you wouldn’t have to sell your captain Fernandes. He has been exceptional. We’ve all been critical at times of some United players — but when we needed someone to step up, he has done it.”

Man Utd urged to remove captaincy from Fernandes

Liverpool hero John Aldridge has taken aim at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Aldridge says the captaincy should be taken from Fernandes.

He wrote for the Sunday World: “When you look at the players who have been United’s leaders since (Sir Alex) Ferguson retired back in 2013, I don’t see many on the list who I would describe as leaders.

“Wayne Rooney was a great player, but he wasn’t a captain and the same is true of their current skipper, Bruno Fernandes.

“The Portugal midfielder was handed the armband after Harry Maguire was stripped of the captaincy by United manager Erik ten Hag and his selection never made any sense to me.

“Fernandes is a good player and can produce moments of magic that win matches, but all I see from him when the chips are down is him moaning and diving.

“If he made up for his annoying traits by producing the goods when his team needed him most, you might say it is worth putting up with his antics.

“Yet he spends more time on his backside than that crazy break dancer from the Olympics and we could do with both of them standing up a little more!

“The arm waving and arguing with referees we constantly Fernandes is childish and you just want him to get on with the job and do what leaders of a massive football club are meant to do.

“Yet Fernandes strikes me as a player who looks great when his side is winning and everything is in their favour, but he goes missing when the tide turns against them.”

Fernandes proved why we picked him as Man Utd captain – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was pleased with Bruno Fernandes for victory over Nottingham Forest.

Fernandes scored the matchwinning penalty as United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said, “You ask the question [about him] but he showed why we pick him as a leader and a captain.

“He is a brilliant captain, by example, an inspiration. He brings the quality, keeps going. I think he played a very impressive game.”

On the fans, he added: “The fans are entitled to have their opinions. Also, you see a very strong bond between the fans and the team, also away from home. I’m very pleased with that. I want to thank them for that bond by giving them good performances. If we stick together, the fans and the team, we will be successful.”

Why Fernandes and I often argue – Casemiro

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro says he and Bruno Fernandes have a rock-solid relationship.

The pair have been seen this season regularly arguing in games.

But Casemiro, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final, said: “I have a very good relationship with Bruno, we get on really well, and as you get to know him as a player, I can say this with complete confidence, he is one of the most important players at the club and everyone sees what a great player he is.

“We could spend all day talking about how good Bruno is because he is a fantastic player but to be honest and I say this to him, I expect a great deal from him because in my eyes, he’s one of the most important players in the team.

“So, when he misses a chance, when one of his passes goes astray, we always want him to do everything perfectly but these are normal conversations.

“I’ve never had an argument with Bruno, the opposite in fact, I just always demand a lot from him, and he demands a lot from me too.

“Behind the scenes too, sometimes we’ll say to each other, ‘You could have scored, you could have done better there, because you’ve got the quality to do it’.”

Why Cristiano Ronaldo likes to work under criticism – Fernandes

Manchester United and Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo gets his best form for being criticised.

Bruno admits he and Cristiano Ronaldo are roommates at the World Cup in Qatar.

Ronaldo scored and Fernandes was outstanding in Portugal’s victory over Ghana last night.

Asked about his now former United teammate, Fernandes said: “I think he likes to work under this kind of criticism, so I hope you keep doing it, because he gets the best out of himself.

“I still share a room with him here on the national team, and the most important thing for me is that Portugal is doing as best we can in this tournament. Because if we do, Cristiano will be happy and then I will be happy and then everyone in Portugal will be happy with us.”

There was no belief from beginning – Fernandes reacts to City loss

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes says they must learn from Sunday’s collapse at Manchester City.

United were beaten 6-3 in the local derby, and conceded four goals by half-time.

“The belief in the beginning was not the best and I think that caused us many problems and made us concede early goals,” said Fernandes.

“I think the second half was much better. We kept control more, we controlled the game whenever we had the ball. We were down on the result, so we had to take some risks. And obviously, when we took that risk, we scored straight away. We tried to [go forward] a little bit more but then we conceded more goals. You can’t give that much space to City.

“Obviously, we are really disappointed. But now it is time to focus on the next game and we have to get back the performances we did before [the international break], and the belief and togetherness, and understand this cannot get us down. We need to improve for the future.”

United’s next game will take place this Thursday in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus, and then the Reds will travel to Goodison Park on the following Sunday to face Everton.

EPL: Fernandes scores in Man Utd narrow win at Southampton

Manchester United ended a dismal sequence of seven straight Premier League away defeats as they secured a narrow win at Southampton.

United manager Erik ten Hag wanted his side to build on the thrilling victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night and they were able to do so in the face of a spirited Southampton challenge.

Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the break with a precise side-footed volley to give United the three points they needed so desperately.

The Saints, who will take heart from their performance, survived an almighty goalmouth scramble in the first half when keeper Gavin Bazunu saved from Anthony Elanga and Armel Bella-Kotchap blocked Christian Eriksen’s follow-up.

United broke through when Fernandes met Diogo Dalot’s cross and as they closed out their second successive win and first league triumph on the road since February, Ten Hag was able to introduce Casemiro, the new £60m acquisition from Real Madrid, as a late substitute.

EPL: Fernandes hits hat-trick as Man Utd thrash Leeds

Bruno Fernandes scored his first Manchester United hat-trick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side overpowered old rivals Leeds to make the perfect start to the new Premier League season.

The Portugal midfielder opened the scoring on the half-hour mark at a packed Old Trafford, but Luke Ayling’s thunderous strike drew Leeds level early in the second half.

Mason Greenwood restored the hosts’ lead with a crisp finish less than two minutes later, before Fernandes’ low shot was ruled to have crossed the line by referee Paul Tierney after a check of goalline technology.

The 26-year-old quickly completed his hat-trick with a thumping finish from Victor Lindelof’s pass, before Fred added United’s fourth goal in 14 minutes from Paul Pogba’s cross – the Frenchman’s fourth assist of the afternoon.

It was Fernandes’ first hat-trick since he moved to Old Trafford in January 2020 and only the second by a Red Devils player since Robin van Persie’s title-winning effort against Aston Villa in 2013.

But the game was also a personal triumph for Pogba.

The France midfielder’s future has been the subject of intense debate as he enters the final year of his contract.

But his four assists included a sublime pass for Greenwood’s goal, and he left the field to a standing ovation 15 minutes from time as £74m new-boy Jadon Sancho was introduced for his debut.

They never treated me like a footballer – Fernandes blasts Barca

Matheus Fernandes has slammed Barcelona after having his contract terminated earlier this summer.

The Brazilian was released from his contract in June following a difficult spell at the Camp Nou, in which he saw his first-team opportunities limited after his arrival from Palmeiras in January 2020.

“I had no idea about it, and when I received the message I couldn’t believe it,” Matheus told Globoesporte.

“I was at home, I was about to go out with my wife when a message from the club arrived, asking if I had the same email.

“I told them yes and then I received it.

“I didn’t really understand it, it sent it to my agent and to my lawyer.

“They said that it was my dismissal.

“A short while passed before it came out in the press.

“Not a conversation, nothing; they did not even call me to say goodbye.”

Matheus continued to lambast Barcelona for their poor conduct in rescinding his contract.

“It was bad, it was ugly from the club,” he said.

However, he went on to state that it was a continuation of his poor treatment throughout his time at the Camp Nou.

“As a child I always dreamed of playing for Barcelona,” Matheus said.

“When I arrived there, they didn’t treat me like a footballer.

“I told them that they weren’t treating me like a Barcelona player.

“Regardless of whether I earn a lot or little, whether the club have done this or that, I am a Barcelona player.

“Whether I play or not depends on me, on the club and on the other players, but I want them to treat me the same.

    “I was a little annoyed.

“Looking at the club from the outside I thought one thing and when I arrived they treated me differently.

“I don’t know if that happens with everyone, but a lot of negative things happened to me.”
