Fernandes admits giving up hat-trick for Cavani

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes admits he considered going for his hat-trick before passing for Edinson Cavani to score in victory at Everton.

It marked Cavani’s first goal for the club and Fernandes declared getting their No7 off the mark was more important than his hat-trick.

Fernandes told BBC Sport: “The point is winning the game. [I set up Edinson Cavani because] for a striker it is important to score for his confidence, he will be important for us and the first goal will give him confidence.

“I don’t need to think about a hat-trick, I need to think about the future.

“Every game is important, we are not good in the league so these three points are important. We have a game in hand so we can go closer to the top of the table. We are not the best team now, and we are not the worst team after Istanbul.

“We will get better if we do the right things.”

Fernandes reveals how Pogba reacts when benched

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has hailed the attitude of teammate Paul Pogba.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has benched Pogba for three of the last four matches and Fernandes hopes that will serve to motivate the midfielder.

He said: “Paul wants to play, he wants to be in the first XI, that is no different to any player – they all want to be in the first XI.

“Of course Paul is an amazing player who has done a lot of great things in the past few years. The way he came in against Paris Saint-Germain, against Newcastle, was perfect for the team.

“A lot of people may think Paul is angry on the bench and that he will do nothing when he comes on because he is angry, but he comes in with the right motivation, as we saw with his assist in Paris.

“He was there, he was fighting, holding the ball in the corner for us, he did a really good job.

“Maybe some people think he was angry because he wanted to play and that he wants to leave the club. Everyone knows the qualities Paul has, he is doing very well.

“Being on the bench is a problem for everyone, but this problem is motivation for Paul.

“He uses this as motivation and he is helping the team a lot when he comes in and plays, like he did in the last game in the Champions League.”

Solskjaer surprises Fernandes with Man Utd captaincy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised Bruno Fernandes at a joint media conference by announcing he would captain Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday after hailing the Portuguese’s recent impact.

Fernandes has been a revelation since his arrival from Sporting in the January transfer window, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions during the second half of the 2020-21 season.

He also ended the campaign as the club’s joint highest goal creator in the Premier League, sitting alongside Marcus Rashford with seven assists.

With Harry Maguire absent for United’s Champions League clash in Paris, Solskjaer had no hesitation in giving the captain’s armband to Fernandes after his impressive start to life as a United player.

“Bruno has come in and had great impact with all the stats showing that,” he rold reporters ahead of the clash in Paris.

“His performances have been receiving real great praise as well. He has not changed the team, but he has sparked the team.”

Ighalo sends message to Man Utd fans about Fernandes

Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo is confident Bruno Fernandes will be a huge player for the club.

Ighalo knows Fernandes well as they spent time together in Italy seven years ago. The 30-year-old said the best is yet to come from his team-mate.

“Bruno is a fantastic player,” he said in an interview with Juliet Bawuah. “I played with him in 2013-14 at Udinese. We’ve not seen the best of him yet in the Premier League.

“Once Bruno Fernandes settles down in England you will see what that guy can do. He has vision, he wants the ball always. He can shoot, he can score goals, he is very intelligent.

“Before the ball comes, he is a step ahead to know what he wants to do. In times to come you are going to see what he can do in the Premier League, even better than what he is doing now.”

Transfer: Benfica’s Fernandes due for Tottenham medical

Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes is due to have a medical at Tottenham on Monday before an 18-month loan to the Premier League club.

Fernandes had been targeted by West Ham but has opted instead to join Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

If he passes the medical, the 21-year-old will become Mourinho’s first signing as Tottenham manager.

“I am waiting for news,” Mourinho said on Monday. “I don’t want to talk about a Benfica player.”

It is understood Tottenham will have an option to buy Fernandes when his loan deal with the Premier League club expires in 2021.

His arrival will be a boost for Mourinho, who has lost skipper Harry Kane and influential midfielder Moussa Sissoko to long-term injury.
