    FIFA U-17 World Cup: Two Nigerian born players dazzle for Germany, Morocco, Mali suffer defeat

    Two players of Nigerian descent, David Odogu and Osayamen Osawe dazzled in the colours of U-17 national team of Germany as they defeated Mexico 3-1 on Monday.

    Christian Wück, the Germany U17 coach  handed starts to RB Leipzig defensive midfielder Winners Osawe and Wolfsburg centre-back David Odogu.

    Barcelona starlet Noah Darvich opened the scoring for the Germans in the 29th minute with a back post finish and turned from scorer to provider when he set up Max Moerstedt, who slotted home in the 38th minute.

    Eric da Silva Moreira added another goal shortly after the restart, and Tahiel Jimenez pulled one back with fifteen minutes left.

    While Odogu went the distance, Osawe, who was on a yellow card, was replaced in the 87th minute.

    In another development, It was a bad outing for African countries at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia as Mali and Morocco suffered defeat.

    After beating Panama 2-0 in their opening match, Morocco fell 0-2 to Ecuador on Monday.

    Michael Bermudez scored a match-winning brace as Ecuador surged to the summit of Group A.

    In the sweltering heat of Surabaya, captain Michael Bermudez emerged as the South Americans’ hero with a well-taken second-half brace, settling a match that could have gone either way.

    No team can beat us – Flamingos defender, Miracle Usani boasts

    Flamingos of Nigeria defender Miracle Usani, has boasted that no team can defeat Nigeria at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

    Usani has assured Flamingos fans that the team can overcome any side at the tournament after their penalty shoot-out victory over the United States on Friday.

    Nigeria beat tournament favourites USA 4-3 on penalties after full-time ended 1-1 with Usani converting one of the Flamingos’ spot kicks, but not without some drama.

    Usani fell on the pitch in tears after she saw her penalty saved by Valentina Amaral, but she got a second chance after VAR adjudged Amaral to have stepped off her line before making the save, which meant Usani had to a second chance to retake the penalty.

    Much to her relief and that of millions of Nigerians back home, Usani converted from the spot as Nigeria advanced to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time since inception in 2008.

    The Nigeria team will face South American side Colombia on Wednesday by 12pm in Goa.

  • WAFU B U17 TOURNEY: Golden Eaglets depart for Cape Coast

    Five –time world champions Nigeria will set out on course for another title on Wednesday when they depart the country for the Ghanaian city of Cape Coast, where they will participate in the Seven-Nation WAFU B U17 Championship that begins on Saturday.

     The two finalists from the tournament in Cape Coast will represent the WAFU B zone at the Africa U17 Cup of Nations billed for Algeria early next year, from where all four semi finalists will qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup finals in Peru.

     Nigeria, with five world titles in the kitty, and three –time world champions and hosts Ghana will set the tournament rolling on Saturday with a potentially –explosive encounter at the Stade Cape Coast starting from 4pm Ghana time (5pm Nigeria time).

     Coach Nduka Ugbade, who has kept his eyes on the ball and his hands on the plough for several weeks screening and training the lads at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja, says his objective is to earn a ticket to the AFCON finals in Algeria.

     “I am happy with the squad that we have been able to come up with, and I can say confidently that we are going to Ghana to do the nation proud. Our primary objective is to earn a ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations, and then we go full throttle for the trophy. Nigeria have a pedigree in U17 football and we cannot afford to disappoint.”

     Ugbade, who captained the squad that won the first of Nigeria’s five world titles at this level, has picked 20 players for the campaign that will last until 24th June, with five more players on standby.

     The Golden Eaglets are in Group A of the competition, with a second match against Togo’s U17 boys on Tuesday next week, also at the Stade Cape Coast.
