England made a bright start to the second half, though, and were awarded a penalty after Bukayo Saka was tripped, and Harry Kane fired it into the back of the net.

Olivier Giroud restored France’s lead in the 78th minute with a header from close range and the Three Lions had another chance to equalise from the spot, but Kane blazed that one high over the bar.

With the win, France will face Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday as they edge closer to completing a successful title defence.

    Kylian Mbappe

The French talisman and man of the moment at the World Cup, Kyllian Mbappe leads the pack with five goals to his credit and still counting.

The Young chap scored three goals in the group stage of the tournament, one against Australia and two against Denmark.

He scored another brace again in France’s 3-0 thumping of Poland in the second round game to take his tally to five.

Should Mbappe remain fit in the remainder of the competition, he’s been dubbed the favourite for the golden boot award of the 2022 Mundial.

    Goncalo Ramos

Coming behind Mbappe is wonderboy, Concalo Ramos after he scored a hattrick against Switzerland in the last second round fixture on Tuesday.

The Youngman replaced Ronaldo in that game and shone like a million stars by helping Portugal demolish Switzerland 6-1 to progress to the quarter-final stage.

Gonçalo Matias Ramos is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a forward for Primeira Liga club Benfica.

Ramos came through Benfica’s youth academy. He began playing for Benfica B in 2019 and was promoted to the first team a year later.

Should he continue his blistering form, Ramos will give Mbappe a run for his money.

    Lionel Messi

Old war horse, Lionel Messi has also shown the qualities he’s made off. The Paris Saint Germain forward has three goals already to his credit and great intent of scoring more goals in the competition.

Apparently, his last Mundial, Messi is doing everything possible to end on a high, the Argentine is looking forward to winning silverware at the Mundial to end his World Cup career on a high.

    Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata is another Player who gave a hot pursuit for the Golden boot award but unfortunately, it suffered a dim when he got booted out alongside his teammates by Morocco in the second round of the Mundial in Qatar.

Apparently, his dream may have been short-lived with his three goals at the competition but he remains on course for silverware too if things work out for him.

    Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands has also proven that he is a force to be reckoned with, he has already put three goals past the opponents’ goalkeepers at the Mundial already.

He remains on course for the Golden boot award with his three goals for his country and still counting. The Netherlands already progressed to the round of 8 at the tournament.

    Bukayo Saka

English boy, Bukayo Saka has also been very wonderful at the tournament, he has already scored three goals and still counting. Saka has been very consistent and may also get silverware too at the Mundial.

    Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford is another player who deserves a mention, the 23-year -old has been very instrumental for England in the ongoing tournament. He came off the bench to score a beautiful goal in England’s 6-2 thumping of Iran.

Against Wales, Rashford scored a brace to help guide England to a 3-0 victory. The first of his two goals was the pick of the bunch, a thunderbolt of a free-kick (also the 1st direct free-kick of this tournament). His second was England’s 100th goal in their entire World Cup history.

    Oliver Giroud

Oliver Giroud has also made his presence felt in this competition by scoring crucial goals for France. He has beaten Thierry Henry’s World Cup record for France already.

Giroud has three goals to his credit already and he’s fired up for more as the tournament progresses.

    Richarlison

Tottenham’s goal poacher, Richarlison has also delivered on all fronts for Brazil in this tournament. The fleet-footed striker has three goals already to his credit and still counting.

His wonder strike against Serbia has been tipped as the goal of the tournament. He possesses the potential to fire Brazil to the final and will give Mbappe a good run ahead of the golden boot award.

BREAKING: Morocco send Spain out of Qatar 2022

Morocco beat Spain on penalties to qualify for the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar after a goalless draw.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Achraf Hakimi was the hero with a chipped penalty, qualifying Morocco for the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the very first time.

Stuck in their third for most of the game, they went close through Aguerd in the first half before surviving an onslaught.

Having just one shot in the second half, Bounou pushed away Olmo’s powerful effort before Morata missed the target with a header.

In extra time, Simon made a point-blank save from Cheddira before Sarabia hit the post with the final kick to send the match to penalties.

Spain faltered from the spot, failing to score any of their three penalties. Sarabia hit the post with Bounou saving spot-kicks from Soler and Busquets.

Morocco were cool from 12 yards. Simon saved Benoun’s effort, but composed strikes from Sabiri and Ziyech, and a chip from Hakimi sent Regragui’s side through.

Morocco are now undefeated in their last five games in the World Cup and will now play either Switzerland or Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Qatar 2022: Australia to catch next flight home after losing 2-1 to Argentina

Having overcome a faltering start in their first World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia, an Argentina squad fuelled by a hard-fought victory over Australia in their second round fixture secured a spot in the quarter-final  by bettering the Australian side 2-1  on Saturday.

Messi then scores his first ever World Cup knockout  goal and the 1000th   career game with a moment of magic to break the deadlock against Australia.

Nicolas Otamendi’s poor touch landed at the feet of the PSG star, and he curled the ball into the far corner with his first shot of the contest to put his side 1-0 up.

Messi has now surpassed Diego Maradona’s World Cup goal with his sublime effort against the Aussies.

Julian Avarez made it 2-0 in the 57th minute of the encounter

Australia pulled one back in the 77th minute but it wasn’t enough to see them through

Portugal vs Uruguay: Portuguese FA appeals to FIFA to credit Ronaldo with Bruno’s goal

The Portuguese Football  Federation has appealed to Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) to award Portugal’s first goal against Uruguay to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bruno Fernandes sent in a cross that splashed through Ronaldo’s head and he thought he had scored but the goal was credited to Bruno during the match with Uruguay.

FIFA, however, thought otherwise and gave the goal to Fernandes with football’s world governing body writing:

“In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in adidas’s Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game.

Ronaldo scored Portugal’s first goal at the Mundial last week in their group H encounter with Ghana.

However, Fernandez has said he wasn’t bothered with who’s credited with the goal, saying the three points was what matters to him.

  • FIFA World Cup 2022: Belgium forced to forsake kit due to ‘LOVE’ message printed inside collar

FIFA World Cup 2022: Belgium forced to forsake kit due to ‘LOVE’ message printed inside collar

Fédération Internationale de Football Association, FIFA, has told Belgium to change their away shirt for the Qatar World Cup as it has the word ‘love’ on it.

The news came on the same day that seven nations backed down in wearing One Love armbands after being threatened with sporting punishments by FIFA.

Belgium would play its opening game against Canada on Wednesday.

“The word love must disappear. It’s sad, but FIFA leaves us no choice. The rest of the equipment remains unchanged,” Peter Bossaert, CEO of the Belgian Football Association said.

Belgium was one of the seven nations, along with England and Wales, who had planned to wear One Love armbands.

However, they opted against it due to the threat of players being given yellow cards.

“Eden [Hazard, Belgium captain] will indeed not play with the One Love band. We can’t do anything else, because the penalties are disproportionate. We can’t risk Eden getting a yellow card before the game starts,” Bossaert explained.

He added: “We were prepared to pay high fines and we also indicated this in our conversations with FIFA but there was simply no consultation possible. That means that we cannot continue our action.”

Bossaert asserted he went to great lengths to try and get an answer on the One Love armband before it was decided that it would not be worn.

In his words: “That band is not a political statement. It is a call for more inclusiveness and a signal for diversity. Months ago we already tried to get in touch with FIFA – I traveled to Switzerland myself – but we never got a concrete answer. In recent days we have pressed even harder because time was running out.

“We really went to great lengths to reach an agreement, until FIFA suddenly indicated that yellow cards would be handed out. The referees had already been instructed to give it if anyone wore that band. We wanted to defuse the situation, but we didn’t succeed.”
