FIFA slams additional six year ban on Blatter

International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) said on Wednesday it had extended the ban on its former president Sepp Blatter and former secretary-general Jerome Valcke by six years and eight months, in relation to the receipt of huge bonuses.

Blatter, who is 85, received 23 million Swiss francs ($24.6 million) in “extraordinary bonuses” linked to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as well as the Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil that preceded it, FIFA’s Ethics Committee said in a statement.

Valcke, the 60-year-old Frenchman who was Blatter’s right-hand man during his 17-year reign at the head of football’s world governing body, received 30 million Swiss francs over the same period, the committee said.

The Ethics Committee said Blatter and Valcke had broken rules in FIFA’s Code of Ethics including “offering and accepting gifts or other benefits” and “abuse of position”.

The new bans will only come into force when the current bans on Blatter and Valcke, which last till October this year and October 2025, end.

The Ethics Committee said it had also fined each man one million Swiss francs.

Gov. Diri hails Pinnick’s election into FIFA council

Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has applauded the emergence of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick, into the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) council.

Diri in a congratulatory message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, on Thursday in Yenagoa, described the election as another positive development for Nigeria on the global scale.

The governor said with Pinnick, Nigeria had put its best foot forward to occupythe top seat in the global football community.

According to him, the NFF president has displayed a remarkable passion for football development in Nigeria since his assumption of office.

The governor said that he was not surprised that Pinnick had continued to excel as a football administrator.

Diri, also a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Bayelsa, observed that Pinnick’s dedication had earned him a deserved recognition and elevation, urging him not to rest on his laurels.
“Pinnick has shown remarkable passion for football development, not only in Nigeria but also, at the global level.

“I, therefore, congratulate him and Nigeria, which put its best foot forward to ensure that he was elected into the FIFA council.

“It is a deserved call to further service towards football development in Nigeria, Africa and on the global level.” Diri stated.

Infantino’s message to Pinnick after winning Fifa Council seat

Fifa president Gianni Infantino is optimistic NFF president Amaju Pinnick will make a meaningful contribution to the development of football after his election as a member of the Fifa Council.

Pinnick clinched the highly coveted seat after defeating Malawian FA president Walter Nyamilandu during the 43rd Caf General Assembly in Rabat.

The 50-year-old, thus, became the third Nigerian administrator to achieve the feat after Oyo Orok Oyo and Amos Adamu.

Infantino has praised the victory of the NFF boss and looks forward to working with him as he aims to take football across the world to a greater height.

“I would like herewith to reiterate my warmest congratulations to you for your election as Member of the Fifa Council, at the 43 Caf Ordinary and Elective General Assembly, held on Friday in Rabat,” Infantino said.

“I have no doubt that your experience, your knowledge, not to mention your passion, your sense of consensus and your personal qualities, will help you to meet future challenges at the service of the world football community.

Bashorun Askia hails Amaju Pinnck, tasks him on grassroots football

Managing Director of Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Bashorun Askia Ogieh, has congratulated Mr. Amaju Pinnick on his election into the FIFA Executive Council, the highest decision making organ of the international football body.

In a statement released in Warri on Monday, the DESOPADEC boss urged the NFF President to use his new position at FIFA to help promote and develop Nigerian football, especially grassroots football.

“While I celebrate and applaud you on your well deserved victory, I wish to quickly urge you to use this elevated position to promote our grassroots football, understandably so, since you are one of our grassroots exports to the world,” Bashorun Askia said, adding, “at DESOPADEC, we are open to all collaborative efforts to promote and enhance grassroots football in our mandate communities.”

“I am confident that you will do Nigeria, nay, Delta State proud at the world football body as you have astutely performed creditably well as NFF President,” Bashorun Askia said.

He said Pinnick’s election into FIFA council offers an opportunity to reposition Nigeria’s football and return it to its glory days.

Bashorun Askia noted that club football in the country is facing huge challenges as no Nigerian club has won any continental trophy for more than 15 years.

As a member of the inner circle of global football administration, Bashorun Askia urged Pinnick to network among other sports administrators to improve the quality of management of clubs and attract sponsorship.

Make your victory into FIFA Council count, Omidiran advises Pinnick

Ayo Omidiran, a former member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee, says new FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick should make his victory memorable and beneficial to Nigerians and Africans.

Omidiran, while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Abuja, said Pinnick should see his election as a collective victory for all Nigerians.

“Pinnick deserves to be a member of the FIFA Council and I believe his impact as a seasoned football administrator will come to bear in FIFA. I pray his time will be a memorable one for him and Nigeria.

“But my advice to him is to let his presence in the Council be felt by Nigerians and he should not relent in the football development stride he is known for,” the former House of Representatives member said.

“I hope his tenure in the FIFA Council will be a memorable one for football, Nigeria and for him especially” she added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Pinnick was elected into the world football governing body’s highest decision-making body at the 43rd CAF General Assembly.

The event took place in Rabat, Morocco on Friday.

BREAKING: Amaju Pinnick elected into FIFA Council

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, was on Friday in Rabat, Morocco elected into the FIFA Council – the highest decision-making organ in world football.

He attained the exalted seat after defeating his only rival, incumbent Walter Nyamilandu of Malawi by 43 votes to 8 at the Congress held inside the Royal Ballroom of the Sofitel Hotel in Morocco’s administrative capital.

Four of Pinnick’s five rivals, Lamin Kaba Bajo (The Gambia), Wallace Karia (Tanzania), Nick Mwendwa (Kenya) and Andrew Kamanga (Zambia) threw in the towel before the vote and opted to back the Nigerian.

General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi casted Nigeria’s vote.

It is a remarkable case of rapid global football boardroom upliftment for a man who, a little over six-and-half years ago, had no intention of contesting for even board membership of the Nigeria Football Federation, but has now been in the post for six-and-half years (becoming the first person to democractically secure a second term), won election as Member of the CAF Executive Committee, served as CAF’s 1st Vice President, still serving as Member of the Organizing Committee for FIFA Competitions, and now a reverred member of the world’s highest decision-making organ for football.

Pinnick’s entry into the 37-member FIFA Council came at the 43rd Ordinary and Elective General Assembly of CAF, and was accomplished hours after the man he supported for the CAF Presidency, Dr Patrice Motsepe of South Africa, mounted the ‘throne’ unchallenged.

    • Motsepe’s challengers Augustine Senghor of Senegal, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Jacques Anouma of Cote d’Ivoire had all withdrawn from the race before today’s poll.

The elevation is for a four-year term, and automatically makes Pinnick a Member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football.

A man who sets and pursues his vision doggedly, Pinnick thus becomes only the third Nigerian to serve in world football’s highest decision-making body, after the late Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo and Dr Amos Adamu.

The quest by the suave and effervescent football administrator for the seat was solidly backed by the Government of Nigeria, which delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Nebolisa Anako was on ground in Morocco.

A mining billionaire who is also into banking and telecommunications and has businesses in 40 African countries, Dr Patrice Thlopane Motsepe is also the owner of top South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

In his acceptance speech, Motsepe expressed gratitude to the African football family for his attainment of the position, saying it is a huge honour to serve African football at the highest level. “All of us can and will work together,” he said, underscoring the need for team work, collaboration and sense of togetherness as he praised Senghor, Yahya and Anouma who withdrew from the race.

Arsenal fight FIFA over sell-on clause row

Premier League club Arsenal are appealing a ruling made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Sun says the North London club have appealed against a ruling by FIFA which saw them handed a £33,000 fine — and the case will be heard next Tuesday.

It relates to sell-on clauses they agreed when selling players.

In 2018, they sold Chuba Akpom to Greek side PAOK and Joel Campbell to Frosinone in Italy.

Sell-on clauses were inserted into both deals stating PAOK would give the Gunners 30 per cent of any future fee for Akpom — but 40 per cent if he was transferred to a British club.

With Campbell it was 20 per cent to another side, but 30 per cent if sold back to Britain.

Akpom subsequently joined Middlesbrough last summer for £2.75million while Campbell is now playing in Mexico for Leon.

The FA and Premier League said no rules were broken but Fifa ruled the clause was illegal.

They claimed it amounted to third party ownership because it gave Arsenal power to influence transfer deals at another team.

Statute of limitations: FIFA ends probe against Beckenbauer, others

FIFA has ended its proceedings against World Cup 2006 organiser Franz Beckenbauer and two other former officials because of a statute of limitations, football’s ruling body said on Thursday.

A Swiss court had ended their probe against German Football Federation (DFB) officials including former president Theo Zwanziger and ex-secretary general Horst R Schmidt for the same reason last April.

“The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has ruled that the conduct of Franz Beckenbauer, Theo Zwanziger and Horst R Schmidt in connection with the 2006 World Cup cannot be prosecuted due to the expiry of the applicable limitation period for prosecution,” a statement said.

FIFA said its investigatory chamber ruled they had violated FIFA bribery and corruption rules around a payment of 10 million Swiss francs in 2002.

The payment was on behalf of or by the 2006 organising committee in 2002 to former official Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar.

It remains unclear why the payment was made.

But the adjudicatory chamber said the relevant limitation period had expired in 2012 for Beckenbauer, and in 2015 for Zwanziger and Schmidt.

The German officials have always protested their innocence in the case, and Zwanziger expressed criticism on the whole proceedings after the FIFA announcement.

“The whole thing was absurd and arbitrary from the start,” Zwanziger said of the FIFA investigation that started in 2016.

He attacked FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino and said that Thursday’s ruling “an embarrassment” for them.

FIFA council election: FG pledges support for Pinnick

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare has pledged government’s support for Amaju Pinnick, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President’s bid to contest for a seat in the FIFA council election.

Dare made the pledge on Tuesday in Abuja when the NFF boss paid him a courtesy visit.

He said the Federal Government would give Pinnick all the necessary support to fly Nigeria and Africa’s flag at the highest FIFA decision making council.

The minister stressed the need for Pinnick to use his position and connections in CAF and FIFA to help promote and develop Nigeria and Africa football at all levels.

Dare said he was happy to see Nigerians aspire to be among the very best in the world, saying it is the way the country can have a say in the committee of football playing nations.

Earlier, Pinnick had thanked the minister and the Federal Government for all the support in their bid to reposition Nigerian football.

The NFF boss also submitted a letter thanking the Federal Government for all the support given him so far, pledging to be a good ambassador of Nigeria if elected into the FIFA Council.

Pinnick who is a current member of
CAF Executive Committee also used the occasion to thank Nigerians for all the support since he became NFF president in 2014.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FIFA Council Election is scheduled for March 12 in Morocco,
where Pinnick is vying for the only CAF anglophone slot.

The 37-member FIFA Council is the main decision-making body of the world football body that sets the vision for FIFA and global football.

NAN also reports that only two Nigerians have risen to the exalted position of FIFA Council members in the past; Dr. Amos Adamu and Oyo Orok Oyo.

FIFA to test concussion substitutes at Club World Cup

ootball governing body FIFA said on Friday it would trial the use of an extra substitute in the case of suspected concussion at the Club World Cup in Qatar next month.

FIFA said the move prioritised player welfare and sent a “strong message that, if in any doubt, the player should be withdrawn” from the game.

Teams at the Feb. 1 to Feb. 11 tournament will still be able to make five normal substitutions, as is common in many competitions during the coronavirus-impacted season.

This is in addition to one more substitution in the case of a potential concussion.

The rule-making body IFAB approved the use of concussion substitutes in December.

European champions Bayern Munich headline the seven-team tournament whose fixtures will be drawn on Jan. 19.
