U-17 W/Cup: Mali maul Mexico to cruise into quarter-finals

Mali made light work of Concacaf champions Mexico in the last 16 of the FIFA Under 17 World Cup Indonesia 2023 to cruise into the tournament’s quarter-finals.

Player-of-the-match Mahamoud Barry scored twice and laid on another as Mali stormed through to the last eight with a stunning demolition of Mexico in Surabaya.

Les Aigles were irresistible throughout, with the outcome all-but settled inside a one-sided opening 15 minutes in which the outclassed Mexicans conceded three times.

Barry was the difference-maker during this period, with his superb opening goal – curled home from 20 yards at the end of a flowing Mali move – setting the tone for what was to follow.

The athletic No.19’s second goal came just four minutes later, and from a near-identical position, with clever approach work again capped by a powerful and precise finish.

Mexico simply had no answer to their African opponents and fell further behind soon.

This was after Ibrahim Diarra’s shot sneaked past Paolo Bedolla and into the bottom-left corner.

The Concacaf champions’ keeper was left thumping the ground in frustration again when Mali went 4-0 up.

This was after having again got a hand to the ball, but not a firm enough contact to prevent Ibrahim Kanate’s penalty finding the net.

Mali’s dominance was maintained in the second half, and Barry helped apply salt to Mexican wounds with a teasing 50th-minute cross that was matched in quality by Ange Martial Tia’s brilliant diving header.

The impressive Africans can now look forward to a quarter-final against either IR Iran or continental rivals Morocco, the team that beat them on penalties in the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Recall that Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips shortly after Spain’s Women’s World Cup triumph over England few months back.

The kiss, which forward Hermoso says was not consensual, sparked outcry, with Rubiales eventually stepping down from his role in September.

World Football governing body, Fifa, has now announced a three-year ban for breaching article 13 of its disciplinary code.

It confirmed the case concerned the “events that occurred during the final of the Fifa Women’s World Cup on 20 August 2023, for which Mr Rubiales had been provisionally suspended for an initial period of 90 days”.

“Fifa reiterates its absolute commitment to respecting and protecting the integrity of all people and ensuring that the basic rules of decent conduct are upheld,” a statement read.

It added that the decision remains “subject to a possible appeal”.

Article 13 of the Fifa disciplinary code relates to offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play.

Rubiales, 46, claimed the kiss at the post-match presentation ceremony was “mutual” but Hermoso has consistently said it was not.

The incident overshadowed Spain’s historic victory in Sydney, Australia.

FIFA Rankings: Super Eagles still 40th best team in the world

The updated FIFA rankings in October shows Nigeria’s Super Eagles maintaining its 40th position and 6th on the continent.

This is despite recording a win and a draw in their last friendly games during the international break, their only games since the last FIFA world rankings in September

Despite gaining an additional 1.62 points in the month under review, the Super Eagles got stuck on the 4oth position in the world.

Recall that Super Eagles held the Falcons of Saudi Arabia in a friendly encounter played in Portugal before before beating Mozambique 3-2 in their other game.

Jose Peseiro’s team witnessed a significant drop in the ranking in April, falling to 40th, following their December ranking of 35th in Africa.

The major reason for this drop was suggested to be their non-participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Nigeria held 39th in the rankings in June and July but slipped back to 40th in September.

Argentina, France Brazil, England, Belgium still occupy the first five positions on the log while Morocco and Senegal are the best ranked teams in Africa as they occupy the 13th and 20th position in the FIFA rankins.

In a friendly match, the Super Eagles edged the Mambas by the odd goal in Maputo, before two memorable clashes in 2009, in the race to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa. In Maputo, both teams settled for a scoreless draw, and in Abuja in October 2009, it was heading for the same scoreline before Obinna Nsofor headed powerfully into the net for the three points to save Nigeria’s blushes. A draw that evening would have automatically eliminated Nigeria from the race.

When both teams faced off at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in 2010, in the group phase, the Super Eagles thrashed the Mambas 3-0 in the city of Lubango.

  • FIFA awards 2030 World Cup to three continents, Africa, Europe, South America

FIFA awards 2030 World Cup to three continents, Africa, Europe, South America

World Cup 2030 will be held across two continents Africa and Europe, TheNewsGuru.com can authoritatively report.

Morocco, Spain and Portugal have been named hosts of the 2030 soccer World Cup, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the opening matches to mark the tournament’s centenary, world soccer body FIFA said in a surprise announcement on Wednesday.

According to FIFA, Morocco, Portugal and Spain was the sole candidate to host the tournament. FIFA were due to announce the hosts next year.

The inaugural World Cup in 1930 was held in Uruguay and won by the hosts after they defeated Argentina in the final in Montevideo.

This is the first time that the World Cup will be hosted across two continents, while it also marks the first time that the competiton will spread across three continents, with the involvement of South American nations of Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

“The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the sole candidacy will be the combined bid of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, which will host the event in 2030 and qualify automatically from the existing slot allocation subject to the completion of a successful bidding process conducted by FIFA and a decision by the FIFA Congress in 2024,” FIFA said in a statement.

“Additionally, having taken into account the historical context of the first-ever FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Council further unanimously agreed to host a unique centenary celebration ceremony in the country’s capital, Montevideo… as well as three World Cup matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay respectively.”

While Portugal and Morocco have never hosted the World Cup, Spain last hosted the tournament in 1982.

Pedro Rocha, President of the Management Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, said they were excited to bring it back to the country, who won the World Cup in 2010.

“I am sure that together with Morocco and Portugal we will organise the best World Cup in history,” he said.

Portugal, who hosted the European Championship in 2004, have finally succeeded in the World Cup bidding process after failing to secure hosting rights for the 2018 and 2022 editions along with Spain.

Fernando Gomes, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, said: “Each of our countries brings a vibrant footballing tradition, unrivalled organisational experience and a capacity for innovation that will undoubtedly leave its mark on the future of the competition.”

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI welcomed FIFA’s decision. The African nation stunned the world in Qatar last year when they became the first team from the continent to reach the semi-finals.

“His Majesty King Mohammed VI… has the great pleasure of announcing to the Moroccan people that the FIFA Council has unanimously selected the Morocco-Spain-Portugal bid as the sole candidate to organise the 2030 football World Cup,” Morocco’s Royal Office said in a statement.

Morocco will be the second African country to host the World Cup after South Africa in 2010.

The decision comes days after Morocco was also chosen to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations, following the withdrawal of rival bids, and a month after an earthquake in the country killed nearly 3,000 people.

Soccer plays a big part in Moroccan life, with its biggest teams often winning African club competitions and drawing packed crowds to large city stadiums.
