    Anambra: Fire guts timber market at Nnewi

    Fire on Tuesday gutted the timber market, which is situated in Nnewi North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra.

    The is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Anambra Fire Service, Mr Martin Agbili, who indicated that the inferno started at about 11:30 a.m.

    According to him, “when we received a distress call of a fire outbreak at timber market in Nnewi, we immediately deployed our fire trucks and gallant firefighters to the scene to fight, control and extinguish the fire.

    “The cause of the fire outbreak is unknown but it emanated from the gully heep of saw dust which threw smoke that covered the entire market although no life was lost.

    “The timber market was completely saved due to the timely intervention of our firefighters. The heavy fire was battled till about 5:40 p. m.”

    Fire destroys planks worth millions of Naira in Lagos

    A fire incident gutted a sawmill and plank market located at Awori bus stop, Abule Egba, Lagos State on Sunday.

    The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi  Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed this in a statement.

    Oke-Osanyintolu said the fire was caused by a high tension cable.

    “At 16:20hrs, the agency received a distress call via its toll free emergency numbers and activated the LASEMA response plans.

    “The Igando zone responded accordingly with LASEMA Response Unit responding from the agency’s hub at Cappa Base.

    “On arrival of the response teams, it was discovered that the sawmill, plank and building material market at the aforementioned address was being gutted by fire.

    “Investigations revealed that the fire was reportedly caused by a high tension cable that cut and dropped on dry plywoods,” he said.

    Oke-Osanyintolu added that the cable ignited immediately, erupting into an inferno that spread to the entire market area.

    “The Distribution company was reportedly contacted and the public electricity power supply to the entire area was immediately disconnected from the national grid.

    “The LASEMA fire unit and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services are aggressively combating the fire to curtail it from spreading to buildings around the market area,” he said.

    He noted that several shops yet unknown were affected with goods worth millions of naira.

    Oke-Osanyintolu, however, said that no life was lost.

    “The inferno is gradually being curtailed and brought under control,” he said.

    Man burns to death while recovering goods from shop in Gusau fire

    A shop owner was burnt to death on Tuesday while recovering his property from his shop at the Gusau Central Market, the state’s Fire Service said on Wednesday.

    Director of Zamfara Fire Service, Mr Abdullahi Dauran confirmed the incident to NAN in Gusau.

    “We received a report of the fire outbreak and deployed our men to the scene.

    “We were able to put the fire under control, but one person lost his life while trying to remove his properties from his shop.

    “We are investigating to ascertain the cause of the incident and to determine the actual extent of damage,’’ Dauran said.

    Fire destroys logistic materials at INEC office

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Oyo State has confirmed a fire incident at its Ibadan South East Local Government Area Office.

    According to a statement issued in Ibadan by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Adeniran Tella, and made available to newsmen, the fire occurred around 10.30 am on Friday.

    The REC stated that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but was assumed to have been triggered off by power surge.

    He also stated that no life was lost, adding that only logistic materials got burnt.

    Tella added that the incident had no effect on the Saki West State Constituency re-run election coming up on February 3.

    Gov Sanwo-Olu opens up over fire outbreak at Mandilas

    Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the fire outbreak at Mandilas Building, Broad Street, Lagos Island did not result in any casualty.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Sanwo-Olu said this on Sunday while disclosing that the fire originated on the 1st floor and got to the 4th of the building.

    According to the Governor, the cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be determined, adding that investigations are underway

    “I would like to provide an update as relayed by our on-ground teams regarding the warehouse fire at Mandilas Building, Broad Street, Lagos Island.

    “The fire originated on the 1st floor and got to the 4th. Currently, our brave teams from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations are actively engaged in firefighting operations.

    “The cause is yet to be determined, but investigations are underway. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

    “I’d like to urge everyone to remain calm as all of our first responders are working hard to bring the situation to a complete halt.

    “I salute our incredible firefighting teams and other first responders, including security personnel. Your dedication is unmatched as you face this challenge head-on,” Sanwo-Olu disclosed.

    Fire guts popular Panteka market in Kaduna

    The Kaduna State Fire Service on Wednesday confirmed a fire incident at the popular Panteka market in Kaduna.

    Mr Paul Aboi, Director, Kaduna State Fire Service, disclosed that the fire incident affected the timber section of the market.

    Aboi said that the fire department received the first distress call from Mr Sadiq Mohammed who rushed to the fire department at 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

    He said several calls were also received.

    Aboi, however, said the fire incident did not result in any loss of life or injuries to the traders.

    According to him, the cause of the fire is still unknown as investigations is ongoing.

    He said that the fire was put out in a collaborative effort by men of the state and  Federal Fire Services.

    Mohammed Abubakar, Chairman of the wood section of the market, said the fire incident started by 1:10 am and commended the fire service for the prompt response.

    “The Fire Service did well in putting out the fire and after the fire was put off, the firemen still remained behind to assist traders’ salvage what was left until the early hours of 8am.”

    Abubakar said that the estimated total loss to the fire had yet to be ascertained, adding that a committee had been set up to determine the exact lost in monetary terms to the fire incident.

    “We are appealing to government agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to come to our aid,’’ he said.

    Fire razed IC World Emporia Centre, a popular shopping mall in the Gwarimpa axis of Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT) in the early hours of Wednesday (today).

    A social media user, @Mister_Mash on X, formerly Twitter, shared a video showing fire burning through the roof of the building.

    “4:13am currently happening right now in Gwarimpa, IC World Emporia on fire. I called the @Fedfireng emergency line 0803 200 3557, and the woman hung up on me. I called 112, they said I should call 122, I called 122, they said I should call 112,”  @Mister_Mash wrote.

    However, an hour later, the social media user shared an update with videos of the Nigerian fire service at the scene.

    Fire incident renders 120 homeless in Ilorin

    A fire incident, which occurred at Megida Onikanhun Compound, Edun Isale, Ilorin South Local Government, has left 120 persons homeless, razing 44 Rooms of a building and a mosque.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the Head of Department of Media and Publicity of the fire department, Hassan Adekunle, on Monday in Ilorin.

    It said that on Jan. 15, 2024, around 11:08 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a fire at Megida Onikanhun Compound, Edun Isale, Ilorin South Local Government.

    “Fire fighters, upon arrival, found the entire compound and Edun Market engulfed in flames due to a late call.

    “To enhance firefighting efforts, part of the fence was dismantled for better access.

    “At 11:22 am, an SMS message was sent to the Brigade Headquarters for additional manpower, and the proficient firefighters successfully brought the situation under control within an hour before completely extinguishing the fire.

    “Investigations revealed that an unknown person set some refuse on fire but this unfortunately spread to the nearby compound,” it added.

    Adekunle expressed condolences to Magaji Megida Onikanhun’s representative, Kuranga Adebayo.

    He commended the fire service’s efforts, but said the incident left over 120 occupants homeless, affecting 44 rooms and a mosque but no casualties were recorded in the 75-room compound.

    Kwara State Fire Service Director, Mr. Falade Olumuyiwa, urged the general public to always play safe, especially during this period.

    He urged the public not to hesitate to call the fire brigade on time whenever there was any fire emergency in their areas, as this would save lives and properties of people in the state.

    National Theatre fire: 4 cows, 3 goats burnt at NCAC office Lagos

    No fewer than four cows, and three goats kept at the National Council of Arts and Culture (NCAC), National Theatre Complex, Iganmu, Lagos, were killed in a fire outbreak on Saturday night.

    The Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mr Amodu Shakiru, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

    Shakiru said that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder explosion, which almost spread to the Artistes Village in Iganmu.

    “Property destroyed includes, four cows and three goats, suspected dead as resulted of the fire. Firemen moved in to stop the inferno and our men with others put the fire off completely.

    “The said property belongs to the National Council of Arts and Culture, located opposite Artistes Village. There is no human casualty involved,” he said.

    No fewer than two persons were injured in an early morning fire incident that occurred on Monday at the residence of late former Gov. Adebayo Alao-Akala in Ogbomosho, Oyo State.

    The Director of Operations, Oyo State Fire Service, Mr Ismail Adeleke, confirmed the incident in Ibadan on Monday.

    Adeleke said the service got a distress call about 8.30 a.m. from one Tolu Ikusagba, Managing Director of Parrot101.1FM, Ogbomoso.

    He said that the cause of the fire incident could not be immediately ascertained, but that the fire had been put out to prevent further spread.

    Adeleke said from the two persons that sustained the injury, one was severe, adding that further update would be provided about the incident.

    However, an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity told NAN that the fire incident was caused by gas explosion.

    The eyewitness said that the incident led to the death of one person which was yet to be confirmed by the appropriate authority.

    The eyewitness also said that the two people that sustained injury had been taken to hospital for treatment.
