  • Again, Agip’s Ogboinbiri/OB-OB gas pipeline vandalised, set on fire [VIDEO]

Again, Agip’s Ogboinbiri/OB-OB gas pipeline vandalised, set on fire [VIDEO]

Barely one week after it was attacked by vandals on March 29, the 24-inch Ogboinbiri/OB-OB gas pipeline has been vandalised and set ablaze.

The breach of the pipeline, operated by Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), cuts the oil firm’s gas export feed to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas gathering and processing plant.

The vandalised point, located within Okaka and Azikoro in Yenagoa Local Government Area, was engulfed by fire on Wednesday.

Mr Idris Musa, Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), confirmed the incident to NAN on Thursday.

The spills response agency had on March 30 said that its investigations revealed a rising spate of sabotage-induced oil and gas leaks at oilfields in Bayelsa.

Musa had raised the alarm that three sabotage incidents had occurred on oil and gas facilities in Bayelsa within one week and advised operators to reinforce surveillance.

The NOSDRA boss explained that shortly after fixing the gas pipeline a few days ago, vandals blew it up and it went up in flames.

“The Nigerian Agip Oil Company is working actively to depressurize the pipeline in order to affect repairs on it,” Musa said.

Officials of NAOC declined to comment on the incident and negligence of the regulator’s advice to intensify surveillance on the asset when contacted for response.

The fire at the site, which had forced surrounding vegetation to wither, is yet to be put out as at Thursday morning.

FG to assess damage caused by fire under Apongbon Bridge

The officials used fire hose to spray fire dousing chemicals on top of the bridge while they passed other hoses with water and other fire extinguishers to the bottom of the bridge.

Sympathisers joined in efforts under the bridge, using buckets of water and sand to tackle the fire spreading between shops.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, South West Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, told NAN that the agency got a distress call about 6.00 a.m. and was able to immediately take control of the traffic situation.

Farinloye said it was difficult for the fire fighters to access the actual location of the fire under the bridge, as they battled it on all sides.

He said that no casualty had been reported, and gave the assurance that adequate security measures were being taken to prevent hoodlums from exploiting the situation to forment trouble.

“As of now, we have taken control of the whole situation, the boys (area boys) have been managed, and I just asked for more deployment of policemen,” he said.

A trader, who simply identified himself as Chukwuma, sobbing profusely, told journalists that the fire might have been caused by petrol stored under the bridge.

He said that two weeks earlier, some concerned traders complained to the market leadership of the dangers flammable materials posed to safety of shops.

Chukwuma said that the leaders ensured that petrol was removed from there then.

While Chukwuma was still talking with journalists, a group of rough-looking young men dragged him away, saying that he should not divulge such sensitive information.

A water vendor, Mr Hamisu Awal, told NAN that he supplied cans of water for more than two hours to help in extinguishibg the fire, but to no avail.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr Olukayode Popoola, told NAN on telephone that officials of the Federal Ministry of Works were at the scene.

Popoola said that the bridge would be shut for immediate integrity tests after a joint inspection to be conducted by a team of engineers from Federal Ministry of Works and a team fron Lagos State Ministry of Works, at 3.00 p.m.

BMW recalls over 917,000 cars over engine compartment fires

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, commonly referred to as BMW, is recalling more than 917,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. most for the third time to fix a problem that can cause engine compartment fires.

The recall covers many 3 Series, 5 Series, 1 Series, X5, X3, and Z4 vehicles from the 2006 through 2013 model years.

According to documents posted Wednesday, by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “there could be an electrical short in the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater. It can overheat and cause a fire.
The fire risk occurs while the vehicles are being driven or soon after they are parked.”

BMW pointed out that the vehicles can still be driven and do not have to be parked outdoors because fires have been rare. The company wouldn’t comment when asked if fires have spread to any buildings.

German multinational corporate manufacturer of luxury vehicles, in a statement, explained that if a driver smells smoke or burning plastic or sees smoke from the engine compartment, they should pull to a safe location, shut off the engine and leave the vehicle.

The German automaker is still developing a fix. Jay Hanson, a BMW spokesman in the U.S., said in an e-mail that the remedy and a sufficient parts inventory are expected in mid-2022. Owners will be notified by letter starting April 25.

Most of the cars were recalled in 2017 and 2019 for the same problem. BMW documents say owners who had the previous repairs done will need to get their vehicles fixed again.

BMW stated in documents that it has eight reports of fires, but no reports of any crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

The company wouldn’t say how many vehicles are being recalled outside of the U.S.

Owners can go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/ and key in their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their autos are affected.
