    INEC breaks silence on Ondo fire incident

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it was yet to uncover the cause of the fire incident that razed two containers were 5,141 card readers were kept in its office in Akure.

    It said the incident would not affect the conduct of the October 10 governorship election.

    The electoral body assured that the governorship election would not be postponed.

    Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Rufus Akeju, said the fire began after its staff have closed for the day.

    Akeju said necessary arrangements have been put in place to replace the burnt card readers.

    He praised fire service men for stopping the inferno from spreading to other parts of the premises.

    The Ondo REC said the commission has begun distribution of non-sensitive materials as well as commenced specialized training for security agents to enable them focused on the job on Election Day.

    On his part, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who pledged to support the body in any way that would not be interpreted as political said Ondo State expected October 10 date remained sacrosanct.

    Akeredolu who was at the INEC office to see the extent of damage said replacing the card readers would be at great cost to INEC.

    The Agbaka of Alagbaka, Prince Afolabi Obasuyi, who was present at the fire incident, said the fire would have been quenched within thirty minutes if the fire service men were prepared.

    Prince Obasuyi called for more investment in the fire service to avoid huge calamity in the future.

    His words, “I was personally there. As the traditional head of Alagbaka community, it is my commitment to the people of this community to see things are okay. I went there with my staff. To my dismay, nothing was done to quench the fire after two hours. Fire service men tried to put off the fire using buckets of water. I alerted the state government and the Airport Fire fighters. I also called the fire fighters at Ilesha.

    “If it were in the Western world, it wouldn’t have been the same. The fire should have been quenched within 30 minutes. My advice is that every community should have their own fire station. Every institution should have a mini fire post. The state fire fighters should be combat ready. If we had good firemen, the fire should have been tackled. It was just a container.”

    Fire engulfs one-storey building in Mushin, Lagos

    A one- storey building on Saturday morning was engulfed by fire.

    The building is located at 10 Moliki Street in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

    It was gathered that the fire started around 8am and destroyed the entire first floor of the residential building.

    Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident to newsmen.

    He said the cause of the fire is still known but rescue operation is ongoing.

    Access Bank PLC on Wednesday confirmed the fire incident earlier reported by TheNewsGuru.com, TNG at its branch at Adetokunbo Ademola, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The bank in a release by its Group Head, Corporate Communications, Amaechi Okobi said investigations have commenced to unravel the cause of the fire. The statement also appreciated rescue efforts by the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Chevron Nigeria Ltd, United Bank for Africa (UBA) PLC and Union Bank PLC.

    UPDATE ON FIRE INCIDENT AT ADETOKUNBO ADEMOLA BRANCH OF ACCESS BANK

    Access Bank PLC confirms the fire outbreak that took place at our Adetokunbo Ademola Branch (Victoria Island) at about 10am today.

    Investigations have commenced to determine the immediate cause of the fire. Upon completion, the Bank will establish updated protocols to avoid a recurrence of similar incidents.

    In line with our established safety protocols, all personnel (customers and staff) were immediately evacuated to safety. The fire has now been extinguished and there were no casualties recorded.

    We appreciate the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Chevron Nigeria Ltd, United Bank for Africa (UBA) PLC and Union Bank PLC for their support to ensure the fire outbreak was adequately controlled.

    A massive fire on Friday razed Teju Foam in Ilupeju area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. The company is close to a popular first generation bank and a filling station.

    According to reports, the fire began around 7:30 pm on Friday night.

    Confirming the development, the Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said distress calls were received about a fire at the location which started at around 7.30pm

    “The combined team of LRU fire and LASG Fire Service have contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other close properties,” he said.

    Oke-Osanyintolu added that inspection of the affected areas revealed that the tailoring section, blocking section, galaxy department, cutting section and stacking area of the premises were affected.

    “The cause of fire remains unknown while damping has been completed,” he said.

    A building inside the Ile Oodua’s Palace of Ooni of Ife was on Wednesday gutted by fire, causing panic in the ancient city.

    The spokesperson to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, Comrade Moses Olafare has said that the reported fire outbreak at the palace of the front line monarch on Wednesday was a ‘minor’ one.

    Olafare in a statement said contrary to widespread reports especially on the social media, the incident which affected a tiny part of one of the administrative buildings left no harm to the oldest palace in Yoruba land.

    He stated that collective efforts from men of the state fire service including those in the palace put off the fire in no distant time.

    Olafare said “The Palace of the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, wishes to inform the entire public that a minor fire outbreak involving a tiny part of one of the administrative buildings within the premises of the palace occurred at about 1:15pm today, Wednesday 19th, August 2020, leaving no harm to the oldest palace in Yoruba land.

    “The minor inferno which lasted for about 20 minutes was immediately put out by collective efforts of people in the palace led by the Ooni’s Chief Security, Kolawole Emmanuel, later joined by men of the fire services from the state government, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife..

    “Aside from the fact that there was no causality whatsoever, the fire was just a minor occurrence which was nothing to be compared to the misleading huge pictures being painted in the media, particularly the social media.

    “While it is suspected to have emanated from an electric spark, measures are currently in place to reveal the cause of the inferno.

    “We wish to thank men of the Osun State Fire service, Obafemi Awolowo University Fire Service and OAUTH Fire Service for their swift response, while efforts of well meaning Nigerians who reached out to the Palace for objective analysis are equally appreciated.

    “Once again, the ancient Palace of Ife remains as rich as before in culture, traditions and tourism.”

    Fire engulfs LASTMA office where seized vehicles are parked in Oshodi, 10 cars burnt

    Ten cars and a trailer were razed by fire on Friday when the yard belonging to the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) in the Oshodi area of Lagos State where seized vehicles are kept went up in flames.

    The incident, which happened on Friday evening, caused confusion as officials of the agency and other government emergency agencies rushed down to the scene to put out the fire which cause was unknown as of the time of this report.

    According to a statement issued over the incident by Nosa Okunbor,Head, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Friday, it took the combined efforts of various emergency agencies to battle the fire for hours before it was eventually put out.

    According to him: “Information gathered by LRT on arrival at the scene revealed that the fire started from the compound where impounded vehicles was kept.

    “The course of the fire was unknown as at the time of filing in this report.

    “A total number of 10 cars and one trailer were razed by the inferno. No casualty was recorded at the scene as the LRT, LRU Fire and LASG Fire are all responders.

    “The fire has been successfully put out by joint responders, dampening down is presently ongoing.”

    BREAKING: Fire guts Guinness Lagos warehouse

    A warehouse located along the Wempco road Ogba Lagos owned by Guinness Nigeria Limited has been gutted by fire.

    The warehouse was said to be used in storing plastic crates.

    Confirming the sad occurrence , the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders, including the LASEMA response team and official of the state fire service, were on ground to salvage the situation.

     

    He said, “On arrival at the scene of the incident at 0430am, it was observed that a warehouse storing plastic crates which appears to belong to the Guinness Nigeria Limited and used to store plastic crates, had been burnt.

    “The immediate cause of the fire could not be determined. However, the agency’s responders and LASG Fire Service officials are on ground to carry out a dampening exercise to forestall any spread or secondary incident.”

    There has been a fire outbreak in Guinness warehouse at Wempco road, close to Oluwole Estate Ogba area of Lagos State on Thursday morning.

    The cause of the outbreak could not be ascertained but eyewitness said the fire started sometime around 2 am Thursday morning.

    Fire authorities are on ground and the outbreak has been put under control as at the time of this report.
