    Mysterious fire in the wee hours of Friday razed the popular CSS bookshop house located at Broad-street Lagos Island .

    The cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

  • Early morning fire kills 2 kids, destroys property in Delta

    Two children were on Monday feared dead in an early morning fire at Igbudu in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta.

    The fire, which occurred at about 2 a.m, also destroyed property, worth millions of naira.

    The victims included one-year-old Wealth Enorke and four-year-old Kesiena Lucky, said to be children of two sisters, Elohor Lucky and Ufuoma.

    Eyewitness account said the incident might have been caused by a lighted candle allegedly put by the grandmother of the deceased children.

    The account further said that the grandmother, a kerosene retailer, might have purchased adulterated kerosene, which caught the flame from the burning candle.

    It was learnt that the woman succeeded in rescuing four of the children in her custody before she raised the alarm that attracted their neighbours.

    The fire was said to have spread to other parts of the building and trapped the deceased before help could come to them.

    Speaking on the incident, Lucky’s mother said that she left their apartment at about 1 a.m. for one Mama Sola’s apartment before she was alerted about the fire.

    “I later left Mama Sola’s apartment for Tuwere place and while I was still there, a neighbour alerted me about the incident at about 2 a.m.

    “Before I got there, everything had been razed down completely,” said Elohor, who was reported to be a single mother.

    The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mohammed Muatafa, confirmed the incident to NAN and described it as unfortunate.

    “It’s true. It is an unfortunate incident. Two children, one-year-and-four-month with four-year-old died in the fire,” he said.

    Five children left at home alone and locked in by their parents were killed in a fire in a slum at a district of the Philippine capital on Monday, firefighters said.

    The victims, four boys and one girl, aged between 1 and 12 years old suffered burns and suffocation, said fire marshall Jones Silvano.

    An initial investigation showed that the fire began in the victims’ three-storey house in the Tondo district of Manila.

    Two of the children were reportedly playing with a lighter and ignited some clothes.

    Their father was at work, while their mother had gone out to buy food and locked the door from the outside, trapping the siblings inside when the fire struck.

    One of the siblings, a nine-year-old boy, survived by jumping from a window on the second floor, Silvano said.

    “The boy called out to his elder brother to also jump, but his brother opted to stay with the younger siblings,” he said.

    The fire quickly spread and damaged a total of 40 houses, leaving about 500 people homeless.

    Firefighters had a hard time accessing the area due to congestion and small alleyways.

    Panic in Imo as angry youths set Magistrates’ court on fire

    Ther was pandemonium at the Magistrates’ Court in Olru, Imo State, as angry youths numbering above 15 set the court building on fire.

    According to a report by The Punch, the fire destroyed all the documents in the court before it could be quenched.

    The Magistrates’ Court is on the premises of Orlu High court.

    The Police spokesperson in the state, Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation, said that it was a case of suspected arson.

    Enwerem said that the Commissioner of Police, Daduki Galadanchi, had mandated the Area Commander in charge of Orlu zone to commence full investigations into the matter.

    Fire razes 21 shops at Fish Market in Maiduguri

    An outburst of fire razed about 21 shops at Fish Market in Maiduguri on Sunday night.

    Mr Ambursa Pindar, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Borno State Fire Service, disclosed this in Maiduguri on Monday.

    He said that preliminary investigation into the incident by the state fire service department indicated that an electrical spark from one of the shops in the market was the cause of inferno.

    He advised traders to exercise caution in their use of electrical appliances, saying shop owners should always remember to switch off such appliances when leaving the market.

    Pindar also stressed the importance of keeping fire extinguishers in their shops, saying they could use them to save lives and property in the event of any fire outbreak.

    NAN reports that the fire started at about 10:30 p.m. and lasted for about three hours, destroying property worth millions of naira.

    A NAN Correspondent, who visited the market, reports that fish and other essential commodities went up in flames.

    The affected traders were seen collecting ruminants of their property from the rubbles.

  • UPDATED: Ecobank, LASEMA react to fire incident at headquarters

    The management of Ecobank on Tuesday said the fire incident at its head office in Victoria Island on the early hours of Tuesday (today) didn’t affect any major equipment and document as speculated on social media.

    The bank in a statement said the fire only affected its generator house and has since been put out by operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

    The bank also appreciated adjoining banks who came to its rescue when the fire started. It noted further that normal banking operations have since commenced.

    Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu also said the agency was working hard to unravel the actual cause of the inferno.

    He, however, reiterated that no lives, documents, and equipment was lost to the inferno.

    FIRE INCIDENT AT ECOBANK’S LAGOS HQ COMPOUND

    No loss of life and damage only to diesel tanker and generator house

    There was a fire incident this morning in the compound of Ecobank’s Lagos head office when a tanker delivering diesel to the Bank caught fire. The fire was contained within the generator house and the diesel truck and there was no loss of life or damage to any other property.

    The Lagos State Fire Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit and the Federal Fire Service arrived quickly and put out the fire.

    Charles Kie, Managing Director, Ecobank Nigeria, said “We commend the fire service personnel for their diligence, expertise and bravery in dealing with this incident. We sincerely thank Fidelity Bank Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Julius Berger Nigeria and NAPIMS for providing much needed support and we also express our sincere appreciation to the general public and all well-wishers.”

    Ecobank’s Data Centre was unaffected, and business at the Head Office rapidly returned to normal. Ecobank assures everyone that the bank’s building and all its other facilities are unaffected. Ecobank successfully triggered its business continuity plan and normal banking activities have continued.

    SITUATION REPORT ON THE ON FIRE INCIDENT AT KOFO ABAYOMI AHMED BELLO WAY, VICTORIA ISLAND

    The Agency received a distress call at about 8.54 am today 31st July, 2018, through the emergency toll free line 112/767 concerning a fire outbreak in the premises of Eco Bank, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The Agency and its responders mobilized to the incident scene immediately. Upon arrival at the scene of incident it was discovered that a 33,000 Ltrs tanker laden with diesel (AGO) while transloading its content cut fire around the Generator house within the Bank’s premises.

    The immediate cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. However, investigation is being conducted to ascertain the actual cause of the inferno. Emergency Responders which includes Lagos State fire Service, LASEMA Response Unit Fire Unit, Federal Fire Service, UBA Fire Service Julius Berger Fire service, NNPC Fire Service were all on ground and combatted the inferno, thereby preventing it from escalating to adjoining building. No casualties nor loss of life was recorded as the inferno was completely brought under control. The main structure within the bank premises was also not affected.

    Dampening of the affected area is still ongoing as at the time of reporting.

  • Otedola fire accident: 9 bodies have been matched to 9 families, says LASG

    The Lagos State Government says nine bodies from the Otedola Link Bridge fire incident which occurred on June 28 have been successfully matched to the families.

    In a statement, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said that 11 families had showed up at Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre (LSD&FC) for testing and only nine families had been matched.

    “”On July 5 2018, samples from the incident were picked up by LSD&FC staff from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Forensic Pathologist, under secured chain of custody.

    “”Reference DNA profiles were generated at LSD&FC from representative family members and compared to the DNA profiles generated from the victims’ samples received from the Forensic Pathologist.

    “”Based on the DNA analysis performed at LSD&FC, all victim samples were successfully matched to relatives’ samples.

    “”Nine bodies have been successfully matched to nine families, out of the 11 families that showed up at LSD&FC.

    “”They are now ready to be handed over to the rightful families for necessary burial arrangements.”

    He said “collection of the remains would commence from 10.00am July 28 at the Seminar Room of the Pathology & Forensic Medicine Department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

    The commissioner said that this was the first time unidentified victims of a mass disaster had been successfully identified locally using DNA technology.

    He said that the identification process was completed in less than four weeks after the incident as against over six months when the practice was to take samples abroad for analysis.

    ““I also wish to note that rigorous effort is made in ensuring that errors are reduced to the barest minimum in order not to compound the agony already being experienced by the bereaved families.

    “”As a government, we share the concerns and anxiety of the affected families and associates on the identification and the need for prompt release of the remains of their loved ones.

    ““However we believe that the thorough investigation which was conducted is in the best interest of all concerned.

    “We wish to reiterate that the entire cost of management and treatment of the surviving victims and DNA forensics for the dead and their families was borne by the State Government, “ Idris said.

    He said that some of the victims of the accident were currently being treated at the Trauma & Burns Centre, Gbagada General Hospital and LASUTH and were responding to treatment.

    According to him 10 patients were admitted at the state’s various hospitals, two died, three have been discharged and five are still on admission.

    NAN reports that the idris had on July 2 confirmed 12 casualties in the June 28 petrol tanker explosion on Otedola Link Bridge.

    According to him, 10 of the victims, including a minor, died at the scene of the accident, while two others died at the hospital.

  • Lagos fire: Police arrest tanker owner, driver still at large

    The Lagos State Police Command on Friday said it had arrested one Hassan Maiwake, the owner of the fuel-laden tanker that caused the explosion on Otedola Bridge, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The command stated that the owner of the tanker with the number plate, NSR 888 YQ, was apprehended in Kano State.

    The ill-fated tanker had gone up in flames on Thursday, June 28, after losing control and spilling its content. Twelve persons were killed by the inferno while four others were injured. About 60 vehicles were also burnt.

    The spokesperson for the state police command, CSP Chike Oti, in a statement on Friday said Maiwake was tracked down by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation And Intelligence Department, Yaba, detailed to investigate the incident.

    The statement read, “The owner of the truck, Hassan Maiwake of 16, Hotoro Limawa, Kano State, was arrested on Thursday, July 26, 2018, in Kano and he is now helping the police to locate the driver of the ill-fated tanker.

    The Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, assures members of the public that the command will do all it can to help families who lost their beloved ones in the accident a sense of closure by ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to book.”

    The statement said a DNA test to ascertain the identities of the charred remains of nine of the deceased was ongoing, adding that further development would be communicated.

     

  • BREAKING: Fire guts Aregbesola’s office in Osogbo

    The office of the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, at the State Secretariat, Osogbo is currently on fire.

    Investigations revealed that the fire started from an air conditioner inside the governor’s office, but the governor was not around.

    A source said the fire was devastating because the security doors leading to the office could not be opened as the fire raged.

    Aregbesola was reportedly not around when the fire started.

    According to online publication, Osun Defender, “the fire outbreak occurred at the White House office of Governor Rauf Aregbesola in Abeere on Monday evening.”

    Eyewitness account revealed that the inferno started around 4pm.

    “The Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, and other top government functionaries were seen at the scene making frantic efforts to arrest the situation,” Osun Defender claimed.
