    Just In: Fire guts popular modern market in Lafia

    An early morning fire outbreak on Friday razed down a popular Lafia modern market located in Nasarawa State.

    TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) gathered that several millions of Naira worth of goods was destroyed after the fire engulfed some shops in the market as the owners and sympathizers watched helplessly.

    As at the time of filing this report, rescue efforts were yet to commence, and no information was available on the probable loss of life arising from the fire incident.

    The immediate cause of the fire is also yet to be established.

    The Director of the Fire Service in the state, Joshua Ombugu, later confirmed to newsmen that the incident was caused by the dumpsite near the market.

    He said the men of the fire service were able to salvage properties worth about ₦10 million, while properties estimated at ₦150 million were destroyed.

    Fortunately, no lives were lost.

    “The incident took place at 21:54hrs. The fire was caused by the dumpsite.

    “We estimated the property lost to be worth about ₦150 million and the property we were able to save worth about ₦10 million.

    “There was no casualty. We mobilised our men swiftly, and five fire ambulances were sent to the site of the incident,” Ombugu said.

    No death or injury was recorded early Thursday morning during a fire incident at the University of Ibadan (UI), the institution and Oyo state fire authorities have confirmed.

    Fire had gutted a section of Queens Hall in the institution in the early hours of Thursday. Confirming the incident, Unibadan’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mrs Joke Akinpelu, told NAN that the fire only affected the offices of the hall warden and his secretary.

    Akinpelu assured that no life was lost and everything had been put under control.

    “Measures have also been put in place to forestall future occurrence,” she added.

    A student who asked for anonymity said the fire must have started around 1:30 a.m. at a block in Queens Hall.

    “The cause of the fire is still unknown, but men of the fire service came early to manage the situation,” he said.

    Speaking also, the General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, said the agency received a distress call about the incident at exactly 1:43 a.m. on Thursday.

    “The call we received was through one Miss Helen Ibikunle and we immediately deployed our personnel.

    “On getting to the place, it was discovered to be two offices at the upper floor at Queens Hall were affected. Property worth billions of Naira were saved from the incident,” he said.

    The general manager also said no casualty was recorded in the incident. He said the fire was completely extinguished in collaboration with the University of Ibadan Fire Service.

    The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says Idumota underbridge market at Ebute Ero area has been gutted by fire.

    The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed this in a statement made on Saturday in Lagos, said LASEMA received a distress call at about 22.20hrs.

    “Following distress calls via the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency lines at 2220hrs, LASEMA activated its emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa and the Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

    “On arrival at the incident scene by 22.55hrs, it was discovered that multiple buildings used as shops for sales of car spare parts were found engulfed by fire. The immediate or remote causes of the fire incident were yet to be ascertained,” he said.

    He added that no casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene.

    “Properties and goods worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed by the inferno,” he said.

    He added that the agency alongside some responders like Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Fire Service were at the scene to prevent the fire from escalating to adjoining buildings.

    “The law enforcement agencies present at the incident scene also activated crowd measures to ensure all-round safety at the incident scene.

    “Frantic efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire. Dampening down has commenced to stamp out the remaining pockets of fire.

    “Salvage of valuable properties in the recovered shops are ongoing and recovery operation still ongoing,” he said.

    Fire disaster averted as tanker spills content in Lagos

    Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers on Wednesday  contained a potentially disastrous situation after a tanker spilled diesel at Charity near Oshodi Oke/Anthony area.

    Swift response by LASTMA officers  helped to ensure safety of road users and minimised disruptions to traffic flow, according to a statement by the agency.

    Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, issued  the statement on Wednesday.

    He said that the agency was committed  to public safety and seamless traffic management.

    “Earlier today, a fully laden diesel tanker experienced a spillage along the main carriageway of the expressway, posing an imminent threat to commuters, residents and surrounding infrastructure.

    “Demonstrating exemplary coordination and urgency, LASTMA officers, in synergy with other emergency response agencies including the Lagos State Fire Service, promptly converged on the scene.

    “Their rapid intervention facilitated  effective containment and mitigation of the hazardous situation, averting what could have been a major disaster,” he said.

    Adebayo said that the affected area was cordoned off to protect lives and property while LASTMA officers  managed traffic flow to minimise disruptions and ensure safety of all road users.

    “This coordinated response successfully neutralised the risk of fire outbreak and environmental degradation,” he said.

    He quoted Mr Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to Lagos State governor on Transportation, as  lauding the emergency teams for professional handling of the situation.

    “This incident highlights the indispensable need for strict adherence to traffic regulations and safety protocols by all tanker operators.

    “We implore all transport stakeholders to prioritise the safety of both lives and property.

    “Lagos State Government remains steadfast in its resolve to enforce compliance with all traffic laws to prevent avoidable mishaps.

    “LASTMA urges the general public to remain calm and exercise patience as efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the affected area,” Adebayo quoted Giwa to have said.

    Fire reportedly engulfs Ajah market in Lagos, goods worth millions destroyed

    A fire incident occurred on Sunday evening at Ajah Market, near Alesh Bus Stop in the Lekki area of Lagos State, destroying goods and items worth millions of naira.

    The fire started around 9 pm and ravaged several shops and stores containing combustible materials.

    According to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the agency, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, acted swiftly to contain the fire. However, the cause of the blaze remains unknown at this time.

    A late evening fire, on Saturday, razed down Enyimba FM building, which also houses Rose and Legend FM stations, managed by Empau Communications Limited.

    It was learnt that the fire began from the Enyimba TV section at about 9.30 pm and spread to the entire building, located at Margaret Avenue, Aba.

    A statement issued on Sunday by the Management of the organisation and made available to newsmen, confirmed the incident.

    The statement explained that the fire razed down the radio and television transmission equipment.

    It added that the fire had forced the stations off air, adding that the management “will use the opportunity to assess and investigate the cause of the fire”.

    “We regret to inform you that our three stations, the Enyimba 94.3 FM, Legend 98.3 FM and Rose 101.9 FM, were targeted in a devastating fire attack on Saturday, November 2, at approximately 9.30 pm.

    “We are eternally grateful for the swift response and assistance from our community, which helped bring the fire under control,” the statement added.

    It expressed delight that “all staff members are safe and unharmed”. It promised to give its numerous listeners updates on its progress as it hopes to return on air soonest.

    Empau Communications Limited is owned by the former Executive Secretary, National Agricultural Land Development Authority, Prince Paul Ikonne.
