    Fire disrupts Lagos train operations

    The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) says the Blue Line train operations will resume on Sunday morning after it was disrupted by fire.

    Mr Kolawole Ojelabi, Head, Corporate Communication, LAMATA, disclosed this in a statement.

    “LAMATA acknowledge a spark, inducing fire on Saturday at a section of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) near the old NEPA Station by Eko Bridge around Apongbon area of Lagos Island.

    “As a result, passenger operations of the Blue Line were disrupted.

    “Following the spark, the system isolated the section for investigators and engineers from the independent power plant, powering the train, to trace the source of the fire.

    “The closed-circuit camera along the section promptly alerted emergency staff who triggered the emergency response process,” he said.

    The official said that no passengers on the train and workers were in danger following the fire incident

    He said that engineers were working hard to replace the burnt cables.

    “LAMATA is committed to ensuring safe operations of the Blue Line, the first rail system to be powered by electricity in West Africa,” he said.

    Fire razes building in Abeokuta, kills 80-year-old woman

    The police command in Ogun has confirmed the death of an 80-year-old woman, Mariam Salako in a fire accident that occurred on Saturday at 28 Ifelodun Ago Ka area in Abeokuta.

    SP Omolola Odutola, the command’s Spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta.

    Odutola noted that a distress call was received by the Area Commander that fire had gutted a house at Ago ka area.

    According to her, the incident occurred at 1:00a.m , adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

    “Around 1:00 a.m, a distress call was made regarding a building on fire located at No. 28 Ifelodun Ago Ka area in Abeokuta.

    ”The Area Commander promptly led a team of police officers to the site while the fire service was called for assistance.

    ”The Ogun State Fire Service quickly responded and managed to bring the fire under control.

    ”Unfortunately, an elderly woman, Mariam Salako, aged 80, who lived in the building, was unable to escape and died in the fire incident.

    ”However, a man known as Baba Ali, whose age is not yet identified, was asleep during the fire and was rescued through the window by community members,” she said.

    Odutola explained that the remains of the elderly woman had been deposited at the morgue.

    An inferno has razed the residence of the Speaker, Zamfara House of Assembly, Alhaji Bilyaminu Moriki, in Gusau.

    This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the house, Bello Madaro

    Madaro quoted the Clerk to the house, Mahmud Aliyu, as describing the disaster as tragic.

    Aliyu said that the inferno destroyed properties worth millions of Naira although no life was lost.

    He said, “The management of the Zamfara assembly was shocked over the fire incident which occurred on Sunday that razed down the speaker’s residence in Gusau.

    “On behalf of the lawmakers and entire staff of the house, I am expressing sympathy to the speaker and his family over

    the calamity,” Madaro quoted the clerk as saying.

    Aliyu urged the speaker and his family to consider the incident as a divine act destined by Allah.

    He prayed to Allah to avert the recurrence of the disaster, adding,

    “on behalf of the entire staff to the house, I extend sympathy over the ugly incident,” the clerk explained.

    Just in: Fire destroys popular Kantin-Kwari textile market in Kano

    A fire outbreak on Saturday night affected famous Kano textile market, Kantin-Kwari.

    Goods and properties worth millions of naira, belonging to shop owners were notably destroyed in a fire incident that happened late evening.

    Shop owners at the market battled to salvage the situation while the fire raged, all efforts fell apart.

    A trader in the market, Alhaji Hamisu Sabo, who spoke to Blueprint narrated his experience.

    He said, “Somebody called me around 7:30pm today (Saturday) that the market is on fire. On getting there, it was only two shops that were already been burnt down, but all things are in control. So we are trying to look at the actual cause of the fire outbreak.”

    Authorities are yet to speak on the incident as the time of filling this report.

    Fire guts Lagos popular market, goods worth millions destroyed

    Fire on Sunday gutted Oko Baba Plank Market in Ebute Metta, Lagos State, which resulted to the destruction of goods worth millions of Naira.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that the fire, which the cause and origin is yet to be ascertained consumed the primary plank market and significant parts of the shanties in the area.

    The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident, saying the fire was quickly curtailed following the prompt response of emergency responders to the scene.

    He said no injury or life was lost in the fire incident.

    “Upon arrival at the scene, it was observed that a plank market and shanties spread on a large expanse of land was engulfed by fire,” Okunbor said.

    “The prompt intervention and coordinated efforts of the LRT, LRU Fire Unit and LASG Fire & Rescue Service curtailed the fire quickly.

    “Collaborative efforts of responders at the scene contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjoining buildings before it was quickly subdued.”

    He stated that the fire has been completely extinguished, adding that dampening down is in progress to prevent re-ignition.

    Okunbor further stated that emergency responders have secured the entire area, while recovery operation is ongoing.

    Emergency responders at the scene include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

    Fire gutted six offices at the headquarters of the Sokoto State Police Command

    The fire ravaged the administrative block before firefighters were able to bring it under control.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the fire affected the administrative department.

    “Yes, there was fire incident on Saturday at the headquarters of the command in the state.

    The incident affected about six offices at the administrative block. The fire service later put out the fire.

    “We couldn’t ascertain the level of destruction, as it falls on the weekend,” he said.

    Recall in February 2024, the Kano State Police Command reported that fire engulfed the Divisional Police Office in Nasarawa Local Government Area.

    Katsina probes Governor’s office inferno

    The Katsina State Government has set up a committee to investigate a fire outbreak that occurred in a part of the Governor’s office at the Muhammadu Buhari House on Monday.

    Abdullahi Aliyu-Yar’adua, the Director, Press, office of the Secretary to the State Government, announced this in a statement in Katsina on Monday.

    The fire outbreak, which occurred in the early hours, damaged the Mini Chamber attached to the Governor’s office.

    Aliyu-Yar’adua said firefighters from both Federal and state offices were able to control the fire blaze before it escalated. According to him, the source of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

    He said that the committee would find out the cause of the fire outbreak, extent of the damage, and identify lapses, if any, that led to the incident.

    The director added that the committee was given the mandate to also recommend ways to avert recurrence.

    JUST IN: Fire outbreak rocks London high-rise building

    Seventy firefighters on Monday were deployed to combat a fire at a block of flats on Freshwater Road in Dagenham, London. The fire outbreak, which reportedly affected half of a flat and balcony within the building, prompted a swift response from the London Fire Brigade.

    Speaking about the incident, London Fire Commissioner, Andy Roe in a statement via the microblogging platform, X formerly Twitter said a full evacuation of the building and a significant search and rescue operation has been carried out. He noted that four people were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews, with two taken to hospital.

    Roe stated that the brigade control officers used new equipment such as drones and our 64-metre and 32-metre turntable ladders, water towers to take out the fire.

    The statement reads: “We were called to the incident at 0244 this morning. The first crew arrived within five minutes and the second crew arrived within six minutes. An aerial appliance also arrived in under six minutes.

    “To allow us to focus our resources on the incident, we declared a major incident, which has now been stood down. I am immensely grateful to the crews and officers who have operated in the most dangerous conditions to both rescue people and bring the incident under control despite being faced with a significant building failure. 

    “The building has a number of fire safety issues known to London Fire Brigade. A full simultaneous evacuation of the building was immediately carried out and a significant search and rescue operation took place.  

    “I am pleased to confirm that everyone has been accounted for. More than 80 people were evacuated with firefighters leading residents out to safety and carrying out 20 rescues. This included using fire escape hoods, which can provide 15 minutes of clean, filtered air in smoke-filled environments, helping individuals stay safe until they can be rescued or reach safety.  Four people were treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews, with two taken to hospital.  

    “The Brigade’s Control Officers took 16 calls to the fire, including successfully giving vital fire survival guidance to a number of people using our Fire Survival Guidance App, which allows information to be exchanged between Control and the incident ground in a timely, accurate and consistent manner. They are also to be commended for their calm professionalism as the building began to fail. 

    “We also used new equipment such as drones and our 64-metre and 32-metre turntable ladders to provide incident commanders with a vantage point for assessing the scene. They were also used as water towers to deliver water on to the fire from above. 

    “The Brigade stood up full strategic arrangements to deal with the incident and a rest centre has been set up at Beacontree Health and Leisure Centre. London Fire Brigade officers and members of our dedicated community support team are stationed at the rest centre to support residents alongside partners. Crews will also remain on scene into tomorrow carrying out further operations. 

    “We will now begin a full investigation into the fire and its cause. This was a very dynamic and challenging incident, and we know there will undoubtedly be concerns around the fire safety issues present within the building and this will form part of our report.  

    “Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected and we will remain present in the local community throughout the coming days to provide support where needed.”

    BREAKING: Traders lose millions, over 40 shops burnt as fire razes Kaura market in Abuja

    A section of Kaura Modern Market, located opposite Prince and Princess Estate in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was on Friday night gutted by fire.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the fire, which started at about 11 pm on Friday, burnt over 40 shops, leaving traders counting their losses.

    As of the time of filing this report, goods and properties worth millions of Naira have been reduced to ashes, leaving traders in a state of despair.

    While the immediate cause of the fire remains a mystery, an eyewitness revealed that it took efforts of the men of the FCT Fire Service to put the fire under control.

    Traders, who lost their wares, were seen lamenting at the scene of the fire incident as they wade through the debris left behind by the inferno.

    The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. However, it is clear that the fire left a significant impact.
