    Unknown man sets mosque on fire during morning prayer in Kano

    A man whose identity is not yet known has set a mosque on fire at Laraba Abasawa in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

    According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, and left worshippers injured.

    The paper reported that members of the community were observing the ‘Subh’ prayer when the incident happened.

    A member of the community, who asked not to be named, narrated that “the man used petrol and lit fire while the people, about 40 of them, were praying. He locked the mosque after the fire.

    “It took time for people outside to get aware of the incident and rescue the victims who were struggling to break out.”

    At least 20 worshippers said to have sustained serious injuries have been rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano.

    Panic as fire guts Shekarau’s residence, Fire Service in a dilemma due to water shortage

    There was confusion today at the Mundubawa country home of former Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau after it was gutted by fire, destroying the sitting rooms of his second wife, Halima.

    Although the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, officials of the State Fire Service are said to be grappling with water shortage.

    It was gathered that the outbreak has remained uncontrollable as men of the Fire Service battle an acute shortage of water.

    Eyewitnesses say the Fire Service had to seek support from private companies with their firfighting vehicles and equipment but could only do little or nothing as there was no water to subdue the inferno.

    Sources said that the Fire Service like every other agency in Kano State have suffered massive neglect from the state government.

    Ibrahim Shekarau’s Kano home gutted by fire

    Kano ex governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau’s Mundubawa country home has been gutted by Fire, destroying the sitting room of his second Wife, Halima Shekarau.

    The fire was suspected to have started from the kitchen but the actual cause of the inferno could not be immediately ascertained.

    Operatives of the Fire service came to the scene but struggled to put it off.

    A source close to the family told newsmen that the fire started from the inner kitchen before spreading to other parts of the building.

    He said, “we thank God the fire only affected one of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau’s sitting roomm and already the Fire Service officials are working to quench it.”

    The spokesperson of the State Fire Service confirmed the Incident.

    “We are still at the house and you know I cannot comment on anything now because we are still trying to make sure that the fire didn’t spread to other places”, he added.

    Fire on Wednesday destroyed four shops located at Ugbowo axis of the Benin metropolis, opposite the university of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin, the Edo capital.

    It was gathered that the fire which started at about 2pm, started from one of the shops dealing on Hospital and Laboratory equipment, and later spread to other shops within the building.

    Men of the Federal Fire Service, the University of Benin Fire Service (UNIBEN) and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) battled to put out the raging fire without luck.

    Residents and shop owners made frantic effort to salvage some of the goods.

    Speaking, Mr. Sunday Madubuko, one of the shop owners who operates a Boutique, said the fire started from a laboratory equipment shop next to his own.

    “The sales girl of the laboratory shop where the fire started from ran to my shop telling me that fire is burning in their office, I told her I don’t have fire extinguisher. Before I knew it, the fire extended to my Boutique.

    “All l know is that the fire started from the laboratory shop and spread to other shops. The cause of the fire, I still do not know. What I lost in the inferno is goods worth over N20,000,000,” Madubuko said.

    When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal fire Service, Asimu Sumaila, told newsmen that operatives of the service were currently at the scene of the incident, adding that he was yet to get a full report from the operational commander of the unit.

    Sumaila, however, promised to get back to journalists as soon as he gets full details of the fire incident.

    It would be recalled that a similar fire incident on Tuesday, April 23, destroyed a building housing over 20 shops at Ekiosa market, located at third junction, Murtala Muhammed Way in Benin.

    FAAN initiates investigation of fire at Lagos airport

    The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it has initiated an investigation into the cause of a fire incident that occured on Thursday at the E54 bridge of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja.

    The Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Mrs Obiageli Orah, said this in a statement.

    According to Orah, efforts to ventilate the smoke from the building are in progress.

    She said the smoke was detected billowing from the E54 passenger Bridge, which led the electrical engineers to immediately cut off power to the entire E Wing.

    “The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team was quick to respond, arriving at the scene by 5.30 a.m.

    “Initial suspicions point to sparks from an electrical unit as the cause, but a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.

    “The incident, which had escalated into a fire, was brought under control by 6.41 a.m.

    “Efforts to ventilate the smoke from the building are in progress. In the meantime, all flight operations in Terminal 1 of MMA have been diverted to the D Wing,” she said.

    Orah also informed that more details would follow shortly as the investigation continues.

    Fire guts Gov Soludo aide’s office

    Parts of the office of the Special Adviser to Anambra Governor on Political Matters, Dr Alex Obiogbolu, was on Tuesday gutted by fire.

    The office is inside the Anambra Government House, Agu Awka, Awka.

    Two fire fighting fighting trucks were deployed by the Fire Service to combat the inferno.

    A source in the office said the fire started from the electricity junction box.

    Obiogbolu, who rushed back to the scene, described the inferno as “unfortunate”, while commending the Fire Service for their swift response.

    In a reaction, Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, the Anambra Fire Chief confirmed that the inferno was as a result of power surge.

    Chiketa called residents to ensure they switched off their electrical appliances whenever they were not not in use and to make sure they had fire extinguishers in homes and offices.

    “It was as a result of power surge, we got there in good time and stopped the fire from causing maximum damage to the building or touching those around it.

    “People should switch off their electrical appliance when they not at home and when they are not in use.

    “It also important to make sure there is fire extinguisher in homes and offices so that they can contain the fire before Fire Service arrive the scene,” he said.

    According to a CNN report, a man, who is yet to be identified, set himself on fire on Friday outside the court where former U.S. President Donald Trump is facing trial.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Trump is facing trial at the Manhattan Criminal Court over hush money paid to a stripper.

    A group of people started screaming after the man poured a substance on himself and set himself ablaze.

    The fire engulfed his entire body, according to the report, and immediately, a smell filled the area like the scent of burning flesh.

    The man’s body was engulfed in flames for at least three minutes. A CNN anchor said on air that she saw a totally charred human being.

    The act reportedly horrified onlookers who fled screaming.

    Security operatives rushed to the scene and tried to put out the fire.

    According to reports, his condition was not known at the time he was taken away to hospital.

    Fire razes 200 shops in Cross River

    No fewer than 200 shops were on Monday night razed by fire at Ikom main market in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River.

    Mr Chika Anya, Chairman of the Lagos line of the market, said the intensity of the inferno was such that nothing could be savaged from the affected shops.

    According to him, the fire incident has been a reoccurring issue almost every year in the market.

    He alleged that as with previous cases, the state fire service was unable to provide much support.

    “All we want now is support from the government to enable us get our lives back.

    “Government should also do the needful by having a functional fire service in Ikom and other council areas of the state,” Anya said.

    One of the affected shop owners, Augustine Eze, said it was difficult to ascertain the cause of the fire as there was no electricity “and nobody is allowed to pass the night in the market.”

    Eze said they got little support from the state fire service during the incident.

    “This is not the first time we are having fire issue in the market and there is always no assistance to quench the fire since the state fire service lacks the equipment to fight one here,” Eze claimed.

    Meanwhile, Mr Peter Okorebi, the state Director of Fire Service, said they would investigate the cause of the fire and take preventive measures.

    Okorebi, however, said that the shop owners have for long formed the habit of cooking in the shops inspite of repeated warnings against such by the fire service.

    According to him, the traders have refused to heed to safety precautions.

    “Our safety officers have repeatedly advised them against this trend but they simply won’t listen,” he added.

    The director debunked the claims that the fire service lacked the necessary facilities to contain fire outbreaks in the area.

    Fire wreaks havoc in Lagos; 4 buildings collapse, 14 others seriously impacted

    A total of four buildings have collapsed due to the intensity of the fire that engulfed part of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island on Tuesday.

    Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), disclosed that 14 other buildings were seriously impacted by the inferno.

    Farinloye said the cause of the fire, according to sources, could be attributed to the refueling of a running generator at the market, which resulted to fire that could not be contained.

    Emergency responders at the scene of the event included NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police and fire service of the Nigeria Ports Authority.

    Again fire guts Gamboru Market in Borno

    Again fire has gutted the Gamboru market around the Custom area in Maiduguri, the Borno capital.

    NAN reports that on March 18,2023 and Nov. 13,2023 fire gutted the market, which is the biggest perishable goods market in Maiduguri.

    Confirming the incident, the Borno Commissioner for Information and Internal Security , Alhaji Usman Tar, said the fire broke out at the Layin Yan Katako and outer sections of the market.

    Tar in a statement said the incident which occurred on Wednesday at about 10pm, was effectively extinguished by men of the fire service.

    “The Borno State Fire Service immediately dispatched a team of firefighters to site and the fire was effectively extinguished.

    “No human casualty reported. The security of the market was not at risk of trespass or vandalisation,”he said.

    According to him, the fire service and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are conducting on-the-spot assessment of the incident to determine the root causes and steps to avoid future occurrence.

    The commissioner said that the state government would take all steps to overcome fire disasters in the state.

    He advised members of the public to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the market is not breached.

    “On behalf of the Borno State Government, we commiserate with all who are affected by this incident.

    “We also thank the first responders for their speed of action which prevented the fire from spreading across the market space,”he said.
