The elated engineer said his two colleagues had set the fish trap playfully on Monday evening and never expected to record such a big catch.

“A hook was set with a smaller fish as bait the previous evening by 2 of my colleagues and honestly it was done playfully without expecting such huge catch.”

Pakama said while doing his normal rounds that fateful morning, he noticed the struggling fish and notified his colleagues.

He said: “However this morning (Tuesday) while taking my normal rounds at the aft of the vessel before going down to the engine room I noticed the struggling fish and called the attention of my colleagues who assisted in getting the fish onboard.

  • President mourns as 22-year-old fish dies, to be embalmed

President mourns as 22-year-old fish dies, to be embalmed

Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu has joined the nation in mourning the death of a fish that lived in a pond at the country’s second-biggest university.

Students at Copperbelt University (CBU) lit candles and marched around campus to mourn the big bream.

The hashtag Mafishi, as the fish was affectionately known, is trending on Twitter in the southern African state.

For the last two decades, CBU students have believed the fish would bring them good luck in exams.

Mafishi, meaning “Big Fish” in the local Bemba language, was thought to be at least 22 years old and had lived in the university’s pond for more than 20 years, student leader Lawrence Kasonde said.

His death was still being investigated, added the president of the Copperbelt University Student’s Union.

“It is yet to be buried, we are planning on embalming it,” Mr. Kasonde told the BBC.

Some students used to pay homage to the fish before exams, believing it brought them good luck while others saw it as a stress-reliever, says BBC Zambia reporter Kennedy Gondwe.

President Lungu quoted Indian anti-colonial campaigner Mahatma Gandhi in his message of mourning, saying on Facebook that “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

“I’m glad you received a befitting send-off. We’ll all miss you,” he said.

Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema said: “We stand with the CBU student community, past and present, over the death of their iconic pet Mafishi.”

In other comments on Twitter, @MoffatSamora said: “May his fins rest in peace we have sent the best lawyers and accountants to come and aid the family in the preparation of his will.”

  • John Terry mocked for posing with a small fish

John Terry mocked for posing with a small fish

John Terry has fallen victim to some hilarious and light-hearted online trolling after posing proudly with a tiny catch after his most recent fishing trip.

The Aston Villa assistant manager and Chelsea legend tried to show off his angling skills by taking a picture with a fish he had caught.

But his friends and social media followers were quick to call him out for his underwhelming results, with some even suggesting he bought the fish rather than caught it.

Former Chelsea team-mate Dennis Wise was among those to comment on the picture, with the former Blues captain writing: ‘Is that it? Did you buy it from the local fish stall?’

Fans soon followed Wise though and posted jokes like: ‘Not sure you need 2 hands for that’ and ‘been catching Blues fans again?’

A Star Barbers – who occasionally go to Terry’s house to give him a hair cut – got involved, commenting: ‘Small fish’, alongside a laughing emoji.

Terry’s wife Toni was more supportive though, posing with the heart-shaped eyes emoji.

He has bigger things to worry about at the moment though as he desperately tries to save Aston Villa from Premier League relegation.

Defeat by Southampton left Villa just one point above the relegation places with just 11 games left of the season.

Following that game at St Mary’s, Villa manager Dean Smith had to deny claims that he had a tunnel bust-up with Terry.

After the game, unsubstantiated rumours circulated online that Smith was involved in a furious row in the tunnel with his No 2.

Smith furiously denied the claims – when quizzed about the alleged bust-up in his post-match press conference, he blasted: ‘That is bulls***’.

Before their focus turns to avoiding the drop though, Dean Smith’s side can win the Carabao Cup this Sunday when they take on Manchester City at Wembley.
