Flood: Eko Disco announces power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island

Following the incessant rainfall that left some areas in Lagos state flooded yesterday, the management of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Sunday announced that there would be a power outage in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and its environs as the company’s injection substations and equipment submerged in the flood.

Mr Godwin Idemudia, General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the company was having challenges in almost all its injection substations as a result of the flood from heavy rains on Saturday.

According to Idemudia, some of EKEDC transformers in the areas have been submerged.

The general manager said that the management of the company had directed that transmission be ‘deloaded’ in the affected areas for safety.

He said that the injection substations affected by the flood included Lekki Transmission Station, Agungi, Lekki, Ademola and Anifowoshe.

“Victoria Garden City, Water Front, Maroko and Oniru Injection Stations are completely out.

“We need to look at the extent of the effect of the flood on our equipment.

“However, we are presently working round the clock to restore supply to our esteemed customers,” he said.

Idemudia appealed to the customers to show understanding over the inconvenience the outage had caused.

Update: Federal Palace Hotel and other flooded highbrow areas of Lagos

More photos and videos have emerged of more highbrow areas of Lagos that were ravaged by flood. TheNewsGuru.com had earlier published photos and videos of several areas of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Victoria Garden City, VGC, areas of Lagos state submerged by the flood, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the state.

RESIDENTS INSTALL WATER PUMPING MACHINES TO PUMP OUT WATER FROM HOMES

Despite the fact that residents in these areas are not new to flood, this seems to be on a whole new level as the flooding left people using pumping machine to pump out water from their houses.

In some comic scenes, some residents were seen swimming in the flood waters while a video of an unidentified white man paddling his canoe (kayaking) on Ahmadu Bello Way, near The Galleria, in Victoria Island Road has gone viral on the internet.

The rich, the cliche goes, also cry! The incessant rain that has held Lagos captive for almost a week now has proved that, indeed, the rich truly also face all the vagaries that bedevil even the wretched of the earth. It is no respecter of the high and mighty!

Recall, earlier in the week, neighbours of Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, woke up to find their highbrow Victoria Garden City (VGC) estate in Lagos, has been taken over by a huge body of water. They virtually had to swim their way in and out of their homes.

Today, it appears residents of VGC are not the only ones who will be needing swimming lessons, Oniru Estate and the Lekki axis too have their own tears to shed. And the tears runs aplenty. All over Lekki phase one and two, and the corresponding estates in Oniru, is a blanket cover of water: they are all drenched in flood. Water has taken over and the proverbial tears is metaphorically flooding the eyelids of residents.

For most, various homes in Lekki, especially the lower floors are flooded. Their sitting rooms have become mini oceans of water; their properties either floating or submerged in rain water.

Their compounds and streets are flooded no go areas. In almost everywhere in Lekki, the middle and upper-class Nigerians are suddenly prisoners. Prisoners to flood. Helpless. They are inconsolable. They are no different from the worst part of Lagos any longer. Flood has become a leveller.

Rainy season: Vacate flood-prone areas now, Lagos Assembly warns residents

The Lagos State House of Assembly has warned residents living in flood-prone parts of the state to seek alternative accommodation before the rain finally starts to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and properties.

The Chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Setonji David, gave the advice on Sunday in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.

David said that the state government would not want to lose any resident to flooding.

The lawmaker called for respect for government regulations on physical planning.

He said: “Residents should consider their safety and the safety of others when they are building.

It is not safe to build without approval. Building on water-logged areas is suicidal; building on waterways or close to a canal is bad. We should make safety a priority.

We are appealing to all residents to build according to plans and obey the regulations on physical planning.’’

David explained further that after securing an approval, an intending plot developer must consult an expert in building.

Some houses have drains around them which have been blocked with refuse; this is also a suicidal as it may lead to a disaster as rains become heavy.

Some people sweep in their houses and throw refuse into the drains and block them. When there is a serious downpour, it can be dangerous.”

The lawmaker commended the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) for stepping up monitoring of building to ensure standards and prevent disasters.

He decried refusal of some landlords and tenants to a government order to vacate distressed houses marked for demolition.

The legislator warned that the government would punish residents flouting its regulations on physical planning.

The chairman said that many lost lives and property would been saved if residents conformed to building regulations.
