We’ll open grain reserves to reduce high prices of food – FG

The Federal Government on Friday said it will open grain reserves as an effective way of curtailing high prices of food in the country.

This was revealed in Abuja by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh while speaking with newsmen.

Ogbeh promised that the move would become a reality within two weeks.

He said that though prices of food items like maize and sorghum were gradually coming down, the reserves would be opened if prices of other agricultural produce did not come down.

“In another week or two, if we find out that the prices are not coming down,we will open the reserves.

“Already the price of maize is falling and even prices of sorghum and millet are beginning to drop.

“From N180, 000 per tonne, maize dropped to N145, 000 and in Kaduna, they are willing to sell at N135, 000 per tonne,’’ he said.

The minister said that farmers had started harvesting rice and wheat in at least, four states to make food available for the people.

‘‘There is no danger of food shortage. ‘’With the quantity of food that some West Africans have carried from here this year, we still have a lot in the stores.

‘‘The prices are too high, the farmers are angry that we want to reduce prices.

‘‘They say we are trying to spoil their businesses; that this is the first time that they are making good money but we are trying to persuade them that there must be synergy.’’ he said.

The minister said transportation of food from one state to another as well as export had commenced to make food available in all the states.

‘’We are moving about 8,000 tonnes of soya-beans from Katsina to Lagos because we are exporting them.

‘‘We are going to use the railway and couches.

The Minister of Transportation,Mr Chibuike Amechi, is bringing in some couches that will help to evacuate these produce.’’

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the Federal Government, on Feb. 1, during its Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, set up a committee to check increases in prices of food items and proffer solutions to the problem.

On fertiliser, Ogbe said the Federal Government would partner with the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to check fertiliser diversion and racketeering in the country.

Ogbeh said that Nigeria had taken delivery of the first batch of phosphate fertiliser from Morocco, following the agreement between President Muhammadu Buhari and King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

According to him, the blending of the fertiliser has commenced in Kaduna state, adding that Federal Government will keep the price at below N6,000 per bag.

“We brought in Phosphate from Morocco after the agreement between the President and the King of Morocco.

“ Morocco is also bringing in Potash; 11 blending companies will start work in the first phase and in the next phase, others will join.

“We are keeping the price of fertiliser at below N6, 000 per bag.

‘’We are hoping that middle men do not get in between and start hoarding or smuggling the fertiliser across the border to neighbouring countries.

“We are trying to get hold of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to help us.

The minister, however, expressed concern over sharp practices encountered in the fertiliser value chain.

“The degree of rottenness in our society is not limited to government. We are a very difficult people.’’

7.1m Boko Haram survivors eat one meal a day – UN envoy

No fewer than 11 million survivors of the destructive Boko Haram insurgents are in desperate need of humanitarian aids.

Mr Toby Lanzer, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel, said this while Spotlighting the desperate plight of millions in Africa’s Lake Chad basin.

The top United Nations humanitarian official for the Sahel region also called for international solidarity with the people in urgent need.

Lanzer told UN Correspondents at the UN Headquarters in New York that the Boko Haram crisis did monumental destruction to the Lake Chad basin countries, which include Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria.

The UN emergency official regretted that the condition of the victims of the insurgents was dire adding,
“I wish I had good news, but I don’t”.

“About 11 million people are in desperate need of humanitarian aid, 7.1 million of them are severely food insecure.

“To say “food insecure”, according to World Food Programme, is that they are living on the edge, surviving on, if they can, one meal a day,” he said.

Lanzer added that among the situation of children is particularly worrying.

“Some 515,000 children are severely and acutely malnourished and their lives are at risk if aid does not reach them urgently.

“No government on earth can do what it takes to confront these numbers of severe food insecurity.

“This is a clear case where international solidarity with the governments of the region is needed,” he stressed.

According to him, the Sahel region already has about 2.5 million internally displaced persons (IDP).

Lanzer said improving security situation in the Lake Chad Basin region had revealed the depth of the humanitarian suffering of survivors of the destructive insurgent group.

“The scale of humanitarian suffering in the region has become increasingly evident with improving security situation as a result of the military campaign against Boko Haram.

“This has allowed humanitarian actors to reach many places which were impossible to get to earlier due to insecurity.

  • Army reacts to viral video of soldiers begging Buhari for food, water

*Video was shot 6 months ago by disgruntled elements, says army

The Nigerian Army has reacted to a viral video of soldiers begging President Muhammadu Buhari for water and food.

The video, which was obtained by TheNewsGuru.com showed several soldiers at Alargarno in Borno State, some of them already fainted and receiving medical care.

However, following the release of the video to the public, the Nigerian Army said the problem was caused by a mischievous soldier, who had since been punished.

In a statement late on Tuesday by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, the army said, “We wish to state that the video clip was shot more than six months ago by some mischievous and disgruntled elements when 29 Task Force Brigade captured Alagarno Forest and environs in Borno State.

“It is disheartening that some mischievous elements have decided to circulate it now, creating the false impression that it is a recent occurrence.

“We wish to state further that the matter was conclusively investigated at the time, several months ago. The Board of Inquiry actually showed that, as of the time of the incident, the unit’s water tanker still contained water, but a soldier mischievously concealed it. That soldier was charged and punished accordingly.

“In addition to the unit’s water tanker, a borehole was subsequently drilled at the location and it is still serving both the military and adjoining communities.

“We wish to restate with utmost concern the continued commitment of the Nigerian Army to the total welfare of all its personnel.”
