  • Nigerian footballer, Martins slumps, dies during league match

    The League Management Company (LMC) has confirmed the death of Chineme Martins, a defender with Nasarawa United FC, who slumped during the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 23 against Katsina United in Lafia.

    The player was attended to by medics of the two clubs when he slumped and was later rushed to Dalhatu- Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia where he was pronounced dead.

    Chairman of LMC, Shehu Dikko said the league regretted the death of the young man in his prime.

    “We commiserate with Nasarawa United and the immediate family of the late player”, Dikko said.

    “The LMC expects that there would be a standard autopsy to establish the cause of the player’s death.

    “It is hoped that the findings of the autopsy would inform subsequent measures, if any that has not been addressed by the existing standard procedure”, the LMC stated.

    “Furthermore, the LMC will keep engaging the club and the player’s immediate family to find the best way possible to offer support in this sad moment for the family and the Nigeria football family at large”.

    Nasarawa United won the match 3-0.

    An angry mob on Saturday stormed a police station in Sagamu, Ogun State, after a police officer reportedly caused the death of Tiyamu Kazeem, a footballer.

    Kazeem played for Ogun State-based Remo Stars Football club.

    Videos and pictures of how the mob vented their anger on the officers and destroyed some properties of the police have been trending online.

    In a statement by Oladimeji Oshode, the media officer of Remo Stars Football club, where Mr Kazeem played in the right-back position until his death, the club mourned the death of Mr Kazeem.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the officers shot at his car tyre which made it somersault. On seeing what had happened, the officials ran away, leaving Kaka to his fate. . . The footballer was later rushed to Fakoya Hospital, Sagamu, where he was pronounced dead. Residents have now taken to the streets to protest the murder of the youngster who once played for the #Remo Football club.

    “The incident occurred this afternoon (Saturday) in Sagamu while he was driving along Sagamu area of Ogun State with one of his teammates, Sanni Abubakar,” the club management narrated.

    It cited a witness account as saying that a SARS officer stopped the footballer and accused him of being a Yahoo Boy(internet fraudster) and they insisted on taking him to the nearby police station.

    “The SARS officer stopped Tiyamiyu Kazeem, insisting that he was a Yahoo Boy. He brought out his identity (ID) card to identify himself as a player of Remo Stars FC, but, the officer insisted on taking him to the nearest police station in Sagamu.

    “Tiyamiyu and Sanni obliged, followed the SARS officers, only for them to notice that they were driving towards Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway. Then the guys questioned to know where the SARS officers were taking them to, but this prompted them to stop the car and push him (Tiyamiyu) out of the car, and a vehicle knocked him down,” the unnamed witness was quoted as saying.

    It was gathered that Mr Kazeem was immediately rushed to Fakoya Hospital in Sagamu, where it was confirmed that he was dead.

    Meanwhile, the police have denied the involvement of any SARS or police officer in the death of Mr Kazeem.

    The Ogun state police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen that the deceased was arrested by officers of the Zonal Intervention Squad of the police force.

    According to Mr Oyeyemi, the youngster was arrested for wearing a military outfit when he was not a soldier.

    “The police officer challenged him and he was arrested. While they were on their way, the vehicle developed a fault and while he was crossing the road, he was knocked down by another vehicle,” he told this paper on Saturday evening.

  • Former Nigerian footballer Philip Osondu dies at 48

    Former Nigerian footballer, Philip Osondu has died in Belgium after taking self to the hospital to be examined on Thursday.

    He was said to have felt unwell at work and decided to visit the hospital where he subsequently died.

    Osondu played regularly for the youth teams of Nigeria, but never reached the first team.

    In 1987 he participated in the World U-16 tournament in Canada. Nigeria reached the final, but then lost on penalties to the Soviet Union.

    He got the World Cup Golden Ball as best player of the tournament.

    Gunmen shoot footballer dead in Amsterdam

    Police in Amsterdam have launched a manhunt for two men on a black scooter, after they killed a footballer, Kelvin Maynard on Wednesday night.

    Kelvin Maynard, a former Burton Albion defender was shot and killed near a fire station, while in his car.

    He was 32 years old. The Dutch-Surinamese player was playing for non-league Dutch club Quick Boys.

    Local reports said Maynard, who also once played for Royal Antwerp was attempting to escape the gunmen by driving towards a nearby fire station.

    He crashed into the station and firefighters attempted to help Maynard. But he tragically died from his injuries, reported The SUN.

    Police are appealing for information on the men on the scooter.

    A police statement said: “We can confirm that the fatal victim of the shooting incident on Langbroekdreef last night was 32-year-old Kelvin Maynard.

    “The investigation into his death is in full swing.”

    The 1995 winner of the FIFA player of the year and Former Monaco player, George Weah, has emerged winner of the Presidential rerun elections in Liberia after winning 12 of the 15 counties in the west African country.

    The elated former footballer took to his Twitter account to announce his win thanking his supporters.

    The striker-turned politician becomes the 25th president of the country.

    “I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season,” Weah said on Twitter before the results were announced.

    However, the nation’s electoral umpire is yet to confirm/announce the overall winner of the election.
