  • Emefiele wins Forbes’ 2017 ‘Best of Africa Achievement’ Award

Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday won the 2017 edition of Forbes’ ‘Best of Africa Achievement Award’

The Chief Executive Officer, Corporate Council on Africa, Florizelle Liser, said the CBN chief merited the honour because the body is happy to see the work that is being done on the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria and “we believe they are going to pay off,” adding, “many of our members welcome it as an opportunity to see how they can trade more with Nigeria and invest more in Nigeria.

So, we thank you (Emefiele) for your efforts. We note that you have a number of agricultural related businesses and seen that there is large support for agricultural development in Nigeria at this stage.”

While presenting the award, the CEO Forbes Business Solutions, Mike Furlong, said the award was to let the CBN chief know that each year, Forbes Emerging Markets honours a person whose achievements falls within the mission of our organisation, which is to promote further investment in Africa by United States investors.

He listed past winners to include Aliko Dangote, Obama’s Chief of Staff, Bill Delly, adding that today, “we are honoured to welcome Godwin Emefiele to join that club”.

Responding after receiving the award, Emefiele thanked Forbes for finding him worthy of receiving the award, tagged: “Best of Africa” on behalf of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Emefiele said it was most important to thank Nigerians for standing with “us particularly during the very difficult times. I say difficult times then, although I make bold now to say we are out of it. Like you all know, the last three years have been tumultuous not just for Nigeria but the global economy, arising largely from the external shocks that hit, particularly the commodity exporting countries.”

The shocks, he pointed out, led to the plummeting of Nigeria’s reserves as crude oil price fell to a point where it dropped by February 2016, “to as low as $28 per barrel. If you compare this price to the time when it averaged $100 per barrel for five straight years from 2009 to middle of 2014, you will all agree with me that we have gone through a lot.”

He said another shock that hit Nigeria like other countries was the United States normalisation to the point that in the last quarter of 2016, about $40 billion left emerging and frontier markets back to US. He said geopolitical tensions also affected flow of funds, including Nigeria, and these, he pointed out, climaxed when “we recorded negative growth. It also got to a point in the third quarter of 2016 where we got negative 2.3 per cent. We also saw inflation hitting us badly. By January 2016, inflation was just nine per cent, but by January 2017, prices have gone up and inflation had hit up to 18 per cent and Nigerians no doubt became uncomfortable.”

At this point, the CBN chief said, “we at the Monetary Policy Committee felt that at this level, something needed to be done. In a study at the CBN, we came to a conclusion that at the level it would be difficult to stimulate growth. So we decided to take inflation head on.

We are happy today that we are doing about 16 per cent now and it would be tamed with other policies in place.”

He also spoke on the reserves. By June 2014, Nigeria’s reserves stood at about $37 billion. As a result of the shock, by October 2016, with all the measures we have taken, it dropped to about $23 billion,

We felt that having taken all the measures so far- currency adjustments three times from N155 to N168 to N197 and above N200, and February this year, a section of the market hit N525, we said something had to be done. But I am happy today that we are here.”

Emefiele praised the foreign investor community for being very supportive, saying “we took some of the decisions that they didn’t like, but I know that we have taken one this time around that excited them. The opening of the Investors’ & Exporters’ Forex Window has been particularly exciting to them.”

He said that in six months, the window has attracted about $10 billion in inflows into Nigeria. “We feel so grateful to them for showing the confidence in Nigeria again. But I think all this also is because President Muhammadu Buhari has always said that: we had unfortunately been hit by this exogenous shock and it had resulted in inflation and plummeting in reserves, but that we needed at some point to look at the items Nigeria imports into the country,” he said.

Emefiele said Nigeria is a big market with 180 million people growing at an average population rate of three per cent annually. “There was a time in Nigeria when we produced everything we were eating. We were producing rice, palm oil etc. Nigeria was the highest producer and exporter of palm oil in the world with over 40 per cent market share sometimes in the 60s and 70s. But unfortunately because we found oil, we decided to take things easy”.

We are delighted we put FX restriction on 41 items and that has increase patronage for local goods.

Today, companies that require starch and glucose for their pharmaceuticals and formulations patronise Nigerians. This has created jobs for us. That is the spirit of Nigerians. This is part of the reasons the President said we needed to patronise Made-in-Nigeria and I am happy that we are doing this. But I think it is also important that we thank everybody, particularly Nigerians. Yes, we have just managed to exit the recession with a fragile growth of 0.5 per cent; we have seen inflation trending downwards, we have seen exchange rate and reserves looking stronger and firmer. But I think we are determined to continue to push further to see to it that Nigeria returns to its historical growth path”.

He said the new commitment to support agricultural development, will help reduce unemployment.

Countries that have progressed have done so because they took the agriculture sector very seriously. We are determined to make agriculture the sector where people make money and we have decided to put in place the Anchor Borrowers Programme. Before we introduced the ABP, farmers go to farm rice and all the yield they were getting was one to 1.5 metric tonnes per hectare”.

After we started the ABP, today we are beginning to see farmers getting yield as high as eight metric tonnes per hectare, reducing their costs and making it possible to make their money in rice cultivation. We have seen that there is a need for us to thing about how do we improve the wealth of our rural community. We started that journey and through rice, we have achieved that,” he stated.

  • Mark Zuckerberg gets $3.5 billion richer in the last five days

Recent financial reports show that Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mark Zuckerberg got $3.5 billion richer in the last five days.

This is an outstanding feat considering the fact that there is a global outcry of financial lack in every nook and cranny.

Forbes reports that the shares of Facebook, which have risen nearly 40% since the start of 2017, continue to gain altitude, and that expectations of strong second-quarter earnings, to be announced at the end of the month, has helped drive Facebook stock to an all-time high on Friday.

That surge has further padded the net worth of Mark Zuckerberg, who holds roughly 17% of Facebook’s outstanding shares and a majority of its voting power, to go higher by $3.5 billion richer in the last five days, Forbes said.

Just 33 years old, Zuckerberg is now worth an estimated $66.7 billion – a record high – according to Forbes’ real-time rankings of the world’s billionaires. He is the sixth-richest person on the planet and the only thirty-something to rank in the top 50.

Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 as a 19-year-old student at Harvard; he later dropped out as a sophomore. The business, which began as a small social networking platform for Ivy League universities, now has more than 2 billion monthly active users.

Zuckerberg was not the only technology billionaire to have a lucrative week.

The net worth of Bill Gates, the planet’s wealthiest individual, rose $900 million to an estimated $90 billion. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also did spectacularly well; his fortune jumped $1.9 billion, to an estimated $85.2 billion. He remains the world’s second-richest person.

  • Dangote, Trump, Putin, others make list of Forbes world’s most powerful persons

Africa’s richest person and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has been named along other world leaders in Forbes recent list of world’s most powerful persons.

Other world leaders who made the new Forbes list are Russian President, Vladimir Putin; American President-elect of the United States of America, Donald Trump; and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

They were ranked along with 70 others as the most powerful people by Forbes Magazine, with Dangote ranked as the second most powerful on the African continent.

In the new list, Dangote was named 68th coming ahead of Trump. Recall that Dangote has remained a constant item on the Forbes list since 2013 when he was listed as the only black African among 100 most powerful persons on the planet.

Forbes, in the latest edition of its 74 World Most Powerful People released at the weekend, listed the 64-year-old Putin as the most powerful in the world, ahead of Trump.

While Merkel was ranked as the third most powerful person in the world, out-going American President, Barack Obama, placed 48th on the list.

The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, is the fifth most powerful person, while the world’s richest person, Bill Gates, comes seventh. Chinese President, Xi Jinping comes before the Pope in number four, while the Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is the number 10 most powerful person in the world.

Forbes reports that there are nearly 7.4 billion people on planet earth, but that the listed 74 men and women make the world turn.

As of 2013, Dangote was the only African listed among the most powerful people in the world before the Egyptian President recently featured on the list.

  • Terrorist leaders rank on Forbes world’s most powerful people list

Self-proclaimed caliph of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of dreadful Al-Qaeda terrorist group have been ranked in the recently published Forbes world’s most powerful people list.

ImageFile: World’s most powerful people: Terrorist leaders on Forbes’ list1

    Leader, Al-Qaeda.

Among hundreds of candidates from various walks of life all around the globe measured along four dimensions: power over lots of people, financial resources controlled by each person, powerful in multiple spheres and active use of power, the two notorious terrorist leaders happened to fall into the selection criteria of Forbes.

To calculate the final rankings, Forbes said “a panel of Forbes editors ranked all of our candidates in each of these four dimensions of power, and those individual rankings were averaged into a composite score”.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, 65, emerging 71 on the list, is an Egyptian-born terrorist leader who succeeded Osama bin Laden as leader of al Qaeda.

Al-Zawahiri has been indicted for his role in the August 1998 bombings of United States (US) embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, and is believed to have participated in the planning of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York.

According to Forbes, despite a contentious relationship between Al-Zawahiri and other terrorist leaders, the terrorist master still has significant symbolic power, and drives many of his followers to violence.

In October, al-Zawahri called on Sunnis living in Iraq to wage a long guerrilla war against Shiite forces as they take back land from the Islamic State in Syria.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Self-proclaimed caliph, Islamic State.

45 years old Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on the other hand retained his position on the list, a position he occupied in the 2015 edition of the ranking by Forbes.

The self-declared caliph of the Islamic State (IS), a global terrorist network seeking to establish a radical Islamic empire in Iraq and the Levant, has, in a remarkably short period of time, mobilized ISIS fighters to seize significant portions of eastern Syria and western Iraq.

Al-Baghdadi has commandeered planet earth’s attention with a series of barbaric beheadings and earned non-negligible amounts of cash, largely through black-market oil sales said to total $1 million a day.

Propaganda efforts have also helped ISIS mint new extremists capable of carrying out terror attacks throughout the Western world.

While al-Zawahiri is making the Forbes list for the first time, al-Baghdadi has made the list in 2015 occupying 57th position.

“This year’s list comes at a time of rapid and profound change, and represents our best guess about who will matter in the year to come,” Forbes said.

59 years old Dangote who emerged 71st world’s most powerful person in 2015, emerged 68th world’s most powerful person in the recent ranking alongside Russian President, Vladimir Putin; United States (US) President-elect, Donald Trump; German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and 71 other world’s most powerful people who made the list.

To compile the list, Forbes said they considered hundreds of candidates from various walks of life all around the globe, and measured their power along four dimensions: power over lots of people, financial resources controlled by each person, powerful in multiple spheres and active use of power.

Forbes said, “To calculate the final rankings, a panel of Forbes editors ranked all of our candidates in each of these four dimensions of power, and those individual rankings were averaged into a composite score,” adding that this year’s list, comprised of 74 world shakers and movers, “comes at a time of rapid and profound change, and represents our best guess about who will matter in the year to come”.

In 2015 Dangote Cement launched new plants in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Zambia and Tanzania. The company produces more than 30 million metric tons annually, and plans to double capacity by 2018.

Dangote, whose net worth is towering more than $12 billion as of December 15, 2016 according to Forbes, owns about 90% of publicly-traded Dangote Cement through a holding company; this percentage exceeds the 80% ownership ceiling set by the Nigerian Stock Exchange. A spokesman for Dangote told Forbes that the company has until October 2016 to lower Aliko Dangote’s stake and plans to do so by then.

Vladimir Putin is emerging the world’s most powerful person for the fourth consecutive year, with the German Chancellor clinching number one spot for world’s most powerful woman and world’s third most powerful person.

“Russia’s president has exerted his country’s influence in nearly every corner of the globe,” the US business magazine wrote, adding that “From the motherland to Syria to the US presidential elections, Putin continues to get what he wants”.

“In second place, President-elect Donald Trump has a seeming immunity to scandal, both houses of Congress on his side, and a personal net worth in the billions.

“And the third most powerful person in the world also happens to be the most powerful woman, Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Germany and the backbone of the European Union,” Forbes announced.

Announced Time magazine Person of the Year recently, Trump, who was elected US president last month, was listed 72nd in Forbes’ 2015 power rankings.

Forbes said there are new names on the list this year, including Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (#13); Travis Kalanick, CEO of Uber (#64); Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company (#67); Mike Pence, Vice President-Elect of the United States (#69), Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines (#70); and Sheldon Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands (#72).

Forbes said two former members also return to the list this year: Antonio Guterres, incoming Secretary-General of the United Nations (#36, last appearance in 2009); and Recep Erdogan, President of Turkey (#56, last appearance in 2011).

Outgoing US President, Barack Obama, who placed second in 2015, plummeted to 48th place this year as he waits out the final weeks of his presidency.

Fourth place went to China’s President, Xi Jinping, while the fifth spot on the list went to Pope Francis.

Forbes said, its list of world’s most powerful people is not meant to be the final word but the beginning of a conversation

“Any ranking of the world’s most powerful people is going to be subjective, so we don’t pretend ours is definitive,” Forbes said.

“So tell us what you think: Is the CEO of Facebook really more powerful than the CEO of Apple? Is the Prime Minister of Japan more powerful than the Prime Minister of Canada? Who did we miss? What did we get wrong? Join the conversation by commenting below,” Forbes demanded.
