Convert forests to military bases – Ganduje tells FG

The All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership on Wednesday said converting forests to military bases will prevent further insurgents’ occupation and improve national security in the country.

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of APC, made the suggestion in Damaturu during a condolence visit to Yobe over the recent terrorists attack on a military formation in Buni-Gari.

Ganduje, who led a delegation of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), said the problem at hand was a national issue that demands urgent attention and collective response.

He said that the unfortunate attack was a deliberate distraction to divert the attention of the state from developmental goals to emergency responses.

The national chairman called for a change in the Nigeria’s national security strategy, saying the use of technology and surveillance in the forest which had become hideouts for criminal elements was paramount.

“Forests that are meant to protect the ecosystem have now become criminal colonies.

“We must liberate these forests. Surveillance cameras and military establishments should be installed to prevent further occupation by insurgents,” he said.

Ganduje, who had similar issue during his tenure as governor of Kano State where he established a military training ground in Falgore forest to neutralise criminal activities, also encouraged Yobe to explore the possibility of adopting same strategy.

The national chairman, however, commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s achievements on security despite the challenges posed by insurgency.

He expressed deep sympathy over the attack which left a military base destroyed, adding “we are here to sympathise and condole with the government and people of Yobe State over the unfortunate incident in Buni-Gari.”

In his remarks, Buni thanked the APC chairman and his delegation for the visit, saying it was a demonstration of true leadership and empathy.

“This visit is not just political, it is a clear sign of care. The attack in Buni-Gari is indeed a national concern.

“Insurgents are targeting military formations to steal arms, and these weapons could be used anywhere in the country,” Buni said.

He, however,  affirmed Ganduje’s call for a shift in strategy, emphasising that insurgency is evolving and penetrating different regions under various guises.

“This is a wake-up call for all of us. We must act fast, collectively, and with a sense of national duty,” he said.

Buni said the insecurity related issues would top the agenda at the upcoming Northern Governors’ Forum meeting in Kaduna, slated for May 10.

He assured the APC leadership that the governors would work with President Bola Tinubu to restore peace and stability in the region.

The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies and collaborating with local communities toward tackling the threat of terrorism.

NDLEA storms Edo forest, destroys 7,286kgs skunk after gun battle

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), have stormed the Ujiogba Forest Reserve in Esan West LGA, Edo, and destroyed 7,286 kilograms (72.86 tons) of skunk and five hectares of its plantation.

The Director, Media, and Advocacy NDLEA, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Babafemi said the operation was carried out ahead of the 2023 general elections on Feb. 25.

He said special operation carried out on Feb. 22, followed credible intelligence that some cartels had warehoused hundreds of jumbo bags of the illicit substance.

These, he said, were located inside the thick forest of the reserve for distribution to some states ahead of the general elections.

He added that the operation could, however, not go on immediately until after several road blocks set up by armed guards of the drug lords were cleared.

According to him, they were overpowered by the superior firepower of Strike Force officers of the Agency in a gun duel.

“After the initial resistance, two rifles, spent cartridges of short guns and an empty shell of AK47 rifle were recovered while a 24-year-old suspect, Calvary Essien, was arrested.

“After the gun fight, the NDLEA operatives successfully descended on a big warehouse constructed with wood and zinc containing:

“100 jumbo bags of cannabis sativa weighing 3.2 tons; 5,000 bags of cannabis weighing 65 tons; and 137 bags of cannabis seeds weighing 4.66 tons, totaling 72.86 tons.

“Seven bags of cannabis and one bag of its seeds were subsequently taken out of the warehouse for further investigation and prosecution of suspects while the rest was set ablaze,” he said.

Babafemi said this was coming on the heels of a similar operation on Jan. 18, in the Opuje forest in Owan West Local Government Area of the state.

He said massive warehouses and tents storing over 317,417 kilograms (317.4 metric tons) of the psychoactive substance were destroyed and set ablaze in a two-day operation.

“At least, a police impersonator, Omoruan Theophilus, 37, who was parading as a Police Inspector to convey the drugs from the forests to the cities and three others: Aigberuan Jacob, 42; Ekeinde Anthony Zaza, 53, and Naomi Patience Ohiewere, 42, were arrested in connection with the drugs,” he said.

Babafemi quoted the Chairman, NDLEA retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa as commending all the officers involved in the effort and the 10,000 officers deployed across the country in the renewed pre-election offensive.

Marwa said the deployment was neccessary to clear every part of the country of illicit substances for use by thugs and miscreants before, during, and after the elections.

He said taking the battle to the doorsteps of the cartels, deep in the forests, was to attack the menace of drug supply from the source.

He added that it was also to send the right message to the barons that there was no safe haven for them and their investments anywhere in Nigeria.

  • How we trekked eight hours in the forest, promised bandits we won’t return to school – Kankara boys

How we trekked eight hours in the forest, promised bandits we won’t return to school – Kankara boys

Some of the rescued 334 Kankara schoolboys abducted last weekend have shared the agonising moments they went through in the hands of their abductors.

According to them, they trekked all the way in the forest, hiding with the bandits as there was no vehicle to convey them.

Aliyu Husseni, a 19-year old SS2 student in the school, said he could not estimate the distance they trekked, saying that he was with his brother, Jani Husseni, who was kidnapped with him.

Aliyu said: “We trekked for eight hours non-stop. Only the younger ones among us did cry, and the bandits, in response, would raise their guns up and shoot in the air, saying they are Boko Haram and they acknowledged only Islamic knowledge.

”They took us to one big rock where we slept for just one hour before we continued to a big mountain where each time they saw a plane (aircraft) they would ask us to lie down.

“We fed on dates from that Friday that we were kidnapped. We were also eating an animal food from a tree commonly called ‘Kalgo’ in Hausa language. We ate that until Sunday evening when we were given potatoes and kulikuli (groundnut cake) before the journey continued.

“We were crying because we were tired and hungry, but they would not listen to us.

”We later reached a place where we rested and were given the usual food. Once you collect your ration, they would beat you as you were going.

“Whenever we wanted to drink water, we did so like animals, putting our mouths to the ground.”

Asked whether ransom was paid for their release, he said: “I don’t know. But some are saying they collected while some are of the view that they did not.

”But they were talking on the phone until they finally took us on motorcycles to a safe ground and released us.

‘’Although we promised them that we would not return to school, we know that we are only loyal to the decisions of our parents. Whatever they say is what we will do.”
