Koffi Olomidé sentenced in France for kidnapping

Congolese star Koffi Olomidé has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for the kidnapping of his former dancers.

The Versailles Court in France pronounced the verdict on December 13. The Congolese singer was, however, acquitted of sexual assault charges he had earlier on been charged with on the same dancers– the former members of his Quartier Latin band.

The sexual assault on the dancers had allegedly been perpetrated between 2002 and 2006 in the singer’s villa in Asnières, a town in the Paris region.

The acquittal on the sexual assaults is “given for the benefit of the doubt,” explained the president of the 7th Correctional Chamber of the Versailles Court of Appeal, referring in particular to the “evolving, sometimes contradictory statements” of the complainants.

The singer’s judicial record is heavy and includes a conviction in 2019 in France, for rape of a minor under 15 years old and sequestration of four of his dancers. At first instance, the Nanterre court gave him a two-year suspended sentence instead of the seven-year prison sentence requested by the prosecution.

The star had appealed against the sentence.

The Versailles court’s verdict on his 18-month sentence came after the Congolese star had left France.

The singer denied the accusations by his former dancers. He said that “the dream of the young women who accuse me was to live in France and obtain papers from associations.”

Koffi Olomide said that “women are very well protected, we must also listen to our point of view”.

Koffi Olomide has been performing live in different locations. Recently, the singer caused a buzz after going to the war-torn areas in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo dressed in military fatigue.

In early November, after he returned from Paris where he had gone to attend his first trial session, Koffi Olomide went to seek solace at the large Kimbanguiste church in Nkamba in the western province of Kongo-Central, where he confessed to the spiritual leader of the church that he was “overwhelmed by problems”.

Koffi Olomide, 65, is a successful star of romantic rumba and had a stellar reputation.

In 2016, he was expelled from Kenya following a public assault on one of his dancers. The singer apologised, acknowledging “a little moment of distraction”.

In 2018, Zambia issued a warrant of arrest against him for assaulting a photographer- being one of the incidences that have created a particularly heavy past for the boss of the Quartier Latin band.

Thierry Henry questions character of modern players

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry says he feels ready to return to management.

Henry, who coached AS Monaco and Montreal Impact, admits he’s struggled to understand the character of the modern player.

He told GQ: “I would love to do this, but you have to be equipped for it. Sometimes you also need the right tools, the right team that understands what and who you are.

“You have to go and meet this new generation.

“You must understand that sometimes being late for them is good. So I was educated in a certain way, but the players at the moment are re-educating me.

“I grew up in the ‘shut up and play’ era. I grew up where you can’t challenge your trainer. I grew up with the idea that if you don’t play, you know why, it’s because you are s***.”

    I would’ve been nominated for Ballon d’Or if… – Mendy

Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, feels he would have been included in the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist if he played for France.

Mendy is the first African goalkeeper to play in the Champions League final since 1985.

The Senegal international kept nine clean sheets last season, as Chelsea went all the way to win the trophy.

Despite his fine displays for the Blues, Mendy was not recognised for the prestigious individual honour for the best players in the world and he has reacted to the snub.

“It’s something that motivates me and pushes me to work. Honestly, I am wondering.

  • Mbappe scores controversial goal to beat Spain in Nations League final

Mbappe scores controversial goal to beat Spain in Nations League final

Kylian Mbappe fired a contentious winner as France came from behind to beat Spain in the Nations League final.

Spain had taken the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal, who beat defender Dayot Upamecano to finish past Hugo Lloris.

But the world champions fought back into the game, first through Karim Benzema.

The Real Madrid delivered the perfect goal for the perfect moment as he equalised with a stunning strike which Unai Simon could do nothing about.

With ten minutes remaining, Mbappe put France ahead at Milan’s San Siro.

The PSG superstar raced onto a through ball but it was obvious he had raced well clear of the last Spain defender, Eric Garcia, when the ball was played.

But VAR refused to overturn the goal despite a lengthy check with English referee Anthony Taylor.

It was later revealed that a slight touch from Spain defender Eric Garcia played Mbappe onside, although that defence has been challenged by many pundits and observers.

Nonetheless, the goal stood and France become the second country to win UEFA’s newest international competition.

  • Why I’ve selected Guendouzi – France coach

Why I’ve selected Guendouzi – France coach

France coach Didier Deschamps says Olympique Marseille midfielder Matteo Guendouzi deserves his place in the national squad.

On-loan from Arsenal, Guendouzi’s form with OM has been rewarded with a new call-up by Deschamps.

The France coach explained, “I’m not going to link Matteo’s form to his trainer (Jorge Sampaoli). He has already come with us, there he has blossomed, he has an important playing time, he has confidence in himself.

“He confirmed beyond his volume of play and his aggressiveness an important technical quality. He brings a lot of freshness that’s important. Even if at times I was able to be conservative by favouring certain players who had a status, it is always good to breathe life into the group.”

  • Former France, Arsenal playmaker Nasir retires

Former France, Arsenal playmaker Nasir retires

Samir Nasri has confirmed his retirement from football at the age of 34.

The former France international announced his decision on Sunday on Canal+, a media outlet where he is now a pundit.

Nasri came through at Marseille and transferred to Arsenal in 2008, spending three years at Emirates Stadium before he joined Manchester City.

At Manchester City, Nasri won two English Premier League (EPL) titles, a League Cup and a Community Shield.

He joined Sevilla on loan in 2016/2017 and seemed to have revitalised his career in La Liga, though the move was not made permanent.

A short spell in Turkey with Antalyaspor followed, but Nasri mutually terminated his contract in January 2018, before he received a six-month ban from football by UEFA.

This was for breaching WADA rules in December 2016 by receiving an intravenous drip of 500 millilitres of water containing nutrients.

It is that ban that Nasri says made him fall out of love with football, with the playmaker always saying he was innocent.

“One episode hurt me badly and changed my relationship with football: my suspension,” he said on Canal+.

“I found that more than unfair, I had not taken any doping product. It was just an injection of vitamins because I was sick. It cut me off in my tracks.”

Nasri returned to play with West Ham on a short-term contract in 2018/2019, playing five league games in total.

He linked up with ex-Manchester City teammate Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht the following season, though it was another ill-fated spell and he was released in 2020.

Of his move to Anderlecht, Nasri said: “There was an emotional side, but also the idea of being a player and also a little in the staff.

“As I would like to coach, I told myself that I would learn with him [Kompany].

“It didn’t go as planned. Then the championship was stopped because of COVID-19. Afterwards, I didn’t necessarily want to [play].

“No challenge excited me and I couldn’t see myself coming back to France if it wasn’t Marseille.”

Nasri impressed at Arsenal, scoring 18 league goals and setting up a further seven across his three seasons at the club, though injuries often kept his appearances down.

He never quite lived up to the billing at Manchester City, though he did help the club to their first ever Premier League crown in 2011/2012.

In 2013/2014, he scored seven goals and created as many as Manuel Pellegrini’s side clinched the title.

His appearances dwindled later in his Manchester City career, and he played just 12 times in the league in his final full season at the Etihad Stadium.

He started on only four occasions before he was loaned out by Pep Guardiola in 2016.

Adams suffocated and suffered a cardiac arrest.

According to his wife, Bernadette, the anaesthetist failed to spot the signs that he was lacking oxygen “because of his skin colour”.
