Deschamps insists Giroud and Benzema sit with eachother at France meals

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud will be seated next to Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema during France’s team meals at Clairefontaine.

Prior to his recall, Benzema took aim at Giroud in the press over his place in France’s squad.

L’Equipe says coach Didier Deschamps has placed the Madrid star in a rather awkward position during meals at the French training base.

The 33-year-old will be sat next to Chelsea star Giroud, as well as Antoine Griezmann, Leo Dubois, Raphael Varane, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard and Hugo Lloris.

Benzema’s return has come as a huge boost for Deschamps, who already boasts a very strong squad. The 33-year-old’s inclusion makes the reigning world champions strong contenders to lift the trophy at Wembley on July 11.

Benzema in, Martial misses out on France Euro 2020 squad

Karim Benzema has received a sensational recall to the France squad for Euro 2020, over five years since he last represented his country.

The Real Madrid striker scored twice in a 4-0 win over Armenia in October 2015, taking his tally to 27 international goals.

Benzema then became embroiled in a blackmail scandal involving Les Bleus team-mate Mathieu Valbuena in the weeks after that game.

He has been subsequently overlooked by national team manager Didier Deschamps, in spite of his outstanding form at club level.

However, the 33-year-old —- who has scored 29 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season —- is undoubtedly the eye-catching name in France’s 26-man party for the upcoming tournament.

By this, he has added further depth upfront for the reigning world champions.

“We met, we spoke at length, I then thought very hard and came to make this decision,” Deschamps said of the decision to bring Benzema back in from the cold.

“I needed this chat, he needed this chat. I don’t want to make this a specific case. As national team manager, I have always looked beyond my personal case. My responsibility is important, but it is bigger than me.”

There is also a place for Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram, as well as Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

Anthony Martial, however, misses out due to fitness concerns.

The forward suffered a knee injury while playing for France in March, though he could make a return to action for Manchester United before the end of the season.

“Anthony Martial would have been here but he is not available. His condition does not allow it,” Deschamps revealed during a press conference.

Teenage midfielder Eduardo Camavinga —- heavily linked with Real Madrid —- is another notable absentee, along with Rennes team-Steven Nzonzi.

There is also no place for Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy.

France will play friendly fixtures against Wales and Bulgaria ahead of the delayed European Championship, which was pushed back a year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Deschamps’ side start their Group F campaign against Germany on June 15, followed four days later by a clash with Hungary.

They complete their round-robin campaign on June 23 by taking on Portugal, the team which defeated them in the Euro 2016 final in Paris.

Buhari seeks anti-terror cooperation between Nigeria, France

President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the need for Nigeria and France to deepen their anti-terror cooperation.

This, he said, became necessary to check and overcome the activities of terrorists and insurgents in the Sahel region and beyond.

The Sahel region includes west to east parts of northern Senegal, southern Mauritania, central Mali, northern Burkina Faso, the extreme south of Algeria, Niger and the extreme north of Nigeria.

Other areas covered are the extreme north of Cameroon and the Central African Republic, central Chad, central and southern Sudan, the extreme north of South Sudan, Eritrea and the extreme north of Ethiopia.

The Nigerian leader made the call in a special feature on post-COVID-19 opportunities in Nigeria-France relations published by a leading Paris-based magazine, Le Point, on Tuesday.

He said that the call had become imperative in view of the fact that terrorists and jihadists had taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to unleash attacks on innocent people and organisations across the Sahel region.

He noted that terrorism had become tragically common across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger as well as around the Lake Chad Basin.

According to him, the Lake Chad Basin is where Boko Haram terrorism has taken advantage of the pandemic and pushed back into Nigeria, launching raids and attacks in Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.

“Now Nigeria and France should deepen our anti-terror cooperation if we are to overcome this scourge – particularly in the aftermath of the murder of the late President of Chad.

“Where for historical ties, support came to Nigeria from the UK, and to the G5 from France, terrorists do not recognise these border-aligned distinctions. We must be agile and flexible, cooperating cross our borders to cut the head off their groups.

“Indeed, we have already done much to strengthen our bond. Intelligence sharing is well developed along with training on improvised explosives.

“But there is more we can do in cross-border military exercises and coordinating strategy.

“We know France has borne much of the strain for combating terrorism in the region.

“We, the leaders of Sahel countries, must also do more to present a unified front to lobby other Western nations, particularly Great Britain and the United States and the European Union for further military and humanitarian assistance,’’ he said.

President Buhari also noted that the fallout of the Libyan crisis had flushed the whole region with weapons, making disputes and competitions far more destructive.

“It is upon these conditions, the lies and propaganda of terrorists who falsely claim to be Islamists promising salvation can find an audience,’’ he said.

He observed that military gains might not provide the whole solution to the security challenges, saying governments must also provide environments conducive to the economic prosperity of their citizens.

“We know that military gains do not provide the whole solution. Without security, economic opportunity remains fragile. Without economic opportunity, the propensity for conflict grows.

“The solution must therefore be two-pronged. If we do not improve those conditions, it leaves our people vulnerable to indoctrination, as one is vulnerable to COVID-19 without a vaccine,’’ President Buhari said.

FIFA approve Man City defender commitment to Spain

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has had his switch in nationality from France to Spain approved by Fifa.

The 26-year-old was granted Spanish citizenship earlier in the week and can now play for the country at Euro 2020 this summer.

Laporte has played for France’s youth teams but has not made an appearance for the country’s senior team.

A Fifa statement said he could play for Spain with “immediate effect”.

Laporte, who was born in France, joined City for a then club-record £57m in January 2018 from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.

Last year, Fifa’s annual congress approved a rule change which meant players could switch countries if they had not played more than three matches for a country before the age of 21 and had not featured at a World Cup or continental tournament.

France will fight you, Macron tells Chadian rebels

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that his country will not allow anyone to threaten the stability of Chad.

Macron spoke in N’djamena in a tribute to late President Idriss Deby Itno who was killed on the battle front by Chadian rebels on Monday.

The rebels had doubled down by threatening to invade N’djamena.

“France will not allow anyone to question or threaten the stability and integrity of Chad,” Macron said at the lying-in-state for Deby, now posthumously a Field Marshall.

“France will also be there to keep alive without delay the promise of a peaceful Chad for all of its children”.

“The transition will have this role to play: stability, inclusion, dialogue, democratic transition, and we are and will be at your side,” said Macron at the funeral at Place de la Nation

Macron arrived N’Djamena on Thursday to attend the funeral.

“After three decades and so many brave battles, the battles you have waged are still aimed at the defence of the homeland, the preservation of stability and peace, the struggle for freedom and security. You lived as a soldier, you died as a soldier, arms in hand, ”he said in memory of the late president.

“Despite the horrors encountered on his way, the war will have been for Idriss Deby Itno, “the ultimate duty to defend his homeland”, Macron said.

Macron said Idriss Deby earned the respect of all, friends and enemies, as “an exemplary leader and a courageous warrior”

“I share the mourning of a Nation touched in its flesh by the sacrifice of its first soldier. I also share the mourning of a friend. You were the first to respond to France’s call in 2013 in Mali.

“For eight years, several thousand of our soldiers have been fighting bitterly, side by side, in the Sahel ”, declared the French president.

Macron pledged France’s support for the transition process underway in Chad, saying it is for a stable and “a peaceful Chad”.

In the face of possible attacks of Chad, Macron declared: “France will not let either today or tomorrow threaten the stability of this country.”

Didier Deschamps eases Martial Man Utd fitness fears

France boss Didier Deschamps says Anthony Martial has not suffered a serious injury.

The Manchester United forward was withdrawn prematurely from France’s win over Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Deschamps was unsure if Martial would play against Bosnia on Wednesday, but he ruled out Martial being sidelined for an extended period.

“Anthony has a small issue on his knee. Nothing is decided yet,” Deschamps said on Tuesday.

“He won’t be taking part in the training session a bit later. We’ll see tomorrow.

“Anything serious has been dismissed. We’ve run some tests, but there’s still the pain, and having travelled as long as we have, that hasn’t helped.”

I’ve taken Dembele under my wing -Paul Pogba

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba was happy with France’s World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan.

Pogba was particularly pleased for Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele after his goal in the 2-0 win.

He said, “The result is positive. We had to do the job and we did it. Against a team that has not let go. Frankly everyone would have thought they were going to let us score 5 goals, but they played well.

“We managed to score two goals, and their goalkeeper had a great game afterwards. We are happy.

“Synthetic? It is special. But I feel good, I came back from injury. I still played 60 minutes. We are happy.

“Dembélé? It’s very good for him. We know what he can bring to the team. He can still progress, he knows it. I took him under my wing, I boost him. He always gives the maximum.”
