Hunger! France imposes curfew to curb rising living costs protests

France announced on Friday new curfew measures to quell civil unrest on its Caribbean island of Martinique, which has been hit by violent protests due to anger over rising living costs.

The local French administration for Martinique said it was banning public gatherings until October 14, and banning the purchase of products that could be used for arson attacks.

It added that protests had disrupted flights at Martinique airport and that as a result of this, flights were being re-directed to the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe.

Since September 2024, there have been widespread protests and violent confrontations across the French Caribbean territory of Martinique.

The unrest is caused by elevated costs of living, and consequential bans on public protests placed by the Central Government of France in several municipalities.

Also, the deployment of elite riot police that had been banned from the territory for over 65 years due to their prior killing of several young demonstrators.

Before 2024, Martinique was the site of several widespread protests against inequality in racial and economic areas.

Protests and civil unrest were especially prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic, where several civilians protested against COVID restrictions implemented by the French government in November 2021

  • Mbappe priority now Real Madrid and not France – Valbuena

Mbappe priority now Real Madrid and not France – Valbuena

Former France midfielder Mathieu Valbuena has taken aim at Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe.

Valbuena has questioned Mbappe’s commitment to France, with the striker out of Les Bleus’ squad this week.

Now with Athens Kallithea, Valbuena told RMC Sport: “Being captain is not just a piece of cloth around your arm, it also means having responsibilities on and off the pitch.

“And I think it would have been important for him to be there for those games, even though he knew he was tired. He could have been there for the group, that’s also the captain. He’s also part of the French national team, he could have been there and his decision is quite strange.

“What surprises the French national team fans is the fact that he is not in the selection and that he would play this weekend against Villarreal. Mbappé’s priority, I think, is not the French national team but Real Madrid. He arrives at a new club, he knows he has everything to prove and that it is not easy to do it there. I think he is giving everything he can to do it… We saw his last outings with France, he was not a great Mbappé, even in the way he played, we had the impression that he was not there”.”

Aurelien Tchouameni to captain France against Israel

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni will captain France for their Nations League game against Israel on Thursday in the absence of Kylian Mbappe, the French federation said on Wednesday.

The federation said his Real Madrid team mate Mbappe, the usual captain, is skipping the Nations League games against Israel and Belgium.

Tchouameni was one of the favourites with fullback Jules Kounde and keeper Mike Maignan.

Mbappe, who join Real as a free agent from Paris St Germain during the close season, has faced criticism in France for not taking part in the double header in Budapest and Brussels while being fit to play for the Spanish club.

Mbappe under fire for skipping national duty while fit to play for Madrid

France captain Kylian Mbappe is facing criticism in his home country for skipping Les Bleus’ Nations League games against Israel and Belgium while being available to play for Real Madrid.

The forward picked up a muscle injury last month but made his return to the pitch in the Champions League last Wednesday.

France coach Didier Deschamps left Mbappe out of the squad he announced on Thursday, saying the 25-year-old lacked preparation, having played too few matches.

Mbappe started Real’s La Liga game against Villarreal on Saturday.

“Either you’re injured, and you don’t play with your club and you’re not called up in the national team,” former France international Maxime Bossis told French sports daily L’Equipe on Monday.

“But when you come off the bench in the Champions League and you start a league game, it makes things fuzzy. He’s a special player. We’ve known that with Michel Platini, when we still wanted him with us when he was injured.”

Mbappe’s situation is more complicated because the former Paris St Germain player is the national team captain after being handed the armband ahead of Antoine Griezmann, who last week announced his retirement from international football.

Griezmann’s commitment to Les Bleus was never in doubt as the Atletico Madrid forward played a record 84 consecutive matches for his country between 2017 and 2024.

“As a captain (Mbappe) must be an example for the fans, and he has not been,” Fabien Bonnet, spokesperson for the Irresistibles Francais, the main France supporters’ group, told L’Equipe.

“What emerges is that the real captain, Antoine Griezmann, is gone.”

France, second in Group A, face Israel in Budapest on Thursday and travel to Belgium next Monday.

Uncertainty as over 100,000 protest In France against new Prime Minister

More than 100,000 left-wing demonstrators rallied across France on Saturday to protest against the nomination of the centre-right Michel Barnier as prime minister and denounce President Emmanuel Macron’s “power grab”.

The interior ministry said 110,000 people took to the streets nationwide, including 26,000 in Paris, while one leading left-winger put the turnout across France at 300,000.

Rallies took place in cities across France including Nantes in the west, Nice and Marseille in the south and Strasbourg in the east.

Macron on Thursday appointed Barnier, a 73-year-old former foreign minister who acted as the European Union’s Brexit negotiator, as prime minister, seeking to move forward after snap elections in which his centrist alliance came second.

Barnier said on Friday that he was open to naming ministers of all political stripes, including “people from the left”.

But a left-wing coalition, which emerged as France’s largest political bloc after the June-July elections, although short of an overall majority, has denounced Macron’s appointment of Barnier.

The alliance wanted Lucie Castets, a 37-year-old economist, to become prime minister, but Macron quashed that idea, arguing that she would not survive a confidence vote in the hung parliament.

On Saturday, many demonstrators directed their anger at Macron, 46, and some called on him to resign.

“The Fifth Republic is collapsing,” said 21-year-old protester Manon Bonijol, referring to France’s current system of government.

“Expressing one’s vote will be useless as long as Macron is in power,” she added.

Hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, whose France Unbowed party (LFI) and allies belong to the left-wing bloc, had called for people to take to the streets, arguing that the election had been “stolen from the French”.

On Saturday, he urged supporters to prepare for battle.

“There will be no pause,” he vowed.

“Democracy isn’t just the art of accepting that you’ve won, it’s also the humility of accepting that you’ve lost,” Melenchon said at the Paris march.
