BREAKING: France defeat Croatia, lift 2018 World Cup trophy

France has won the World Cup by defeating Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.

It is the second World Cup trophy for France since the tournament was held in the nation back in 1998.

With an average age of 26, France had the second youngest team in the tournament, and their golden generation featuring Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are set to return home as heroes.

Croatia took charge of proceedings in the first ten minutes but the French side went ahead after Mario Mandzukic flicked the ball onto his own net at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Ivan Perisic then levelled things up for Croatia in the 28th minute before he handled the ball in his box to give Didier Deschamp’s team a penalty which Antoine Griezmann clinically put away.

Paul Pogba and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe netted a goal each as the second-half began to put the game beyond the reach of their opponents.

However, a moment of ”madness” from Hugo Lloris handed the Croats a lifeline but the 1998 champions sat back to see off the game, exorcising the demons of their 2006 loss in Germany.

France out to rectify Euro 2016 mistakes in World Cup final – Pogba

France are determined not to make the same mistakes they did two years ago in losing the Euro 2016 final.

France will take on Croatia for the biggest prize in football, and midfielder Paul Pogba said on Thursday that he wants the team to banish their 2016 devil.

France face the Croats in the World Cup final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday, but they are rejecting the favourites tag which cost them dearly two years ago, he said.

The French beat Germany in the Euro 2016 semi-final setting up an encounter in Paris against then-underdogs Portugal, who stunned them 1-0 in extra time to win the continental title.

“We are conscious of the situation, we do not want to make the same mistakes like two years ago.

“We want to work for it, to give everything we have to take this Cup home,” Pogba told reporters.

“I think at the Euro we thought it was already a done deal, the mentality was not the same as now.

“I cannot lie that when we beat Germany we thought that was the final. I know the taste of losing a final. I don’t want it to happen again.

“Against Portugal we thought we had won it before the start of the game. That will not happen again.”

France have been improving throughout the tournament and have beat Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium in the knockout rounds without needing extra time or penalties.

Croatia needed spot kicks to advance against Denmark in the last 16 and against Russia in the quarter-finals.

“They then came from a goal down against England on Wednesday to win 2-1 in extra time.

“That is not a sign of a struggling team, according to Pogba, but one that has a lot of talent.

“The Croats had a very difficult match and they were behind. But they are mentally very strong. There are two teams in the final, a Cup and there are 90 minutes more.

“For us, we are not the favourites. We stay as we are from the start of the tournament. We have no doubts, we play together, that’s our strength. We are chasing something and will do everything to succeed.”

France, world champions in 1998 after beating Croatia in the semis, are in their third World Cup final. It is unknown territory for Croatia however.

“For sure the Croats they want the star (for winning the title) they have had a good run.

“They want to win. But I have no star either although there is one on my shirt. I want mine.”

Pogba said while Croatia midfielder Luka Modric was their driving force the French plan would not be limited to stopping the Real Madrid playmaker.

“The Croats are not just Modric. They have (Mario) Mandzukic, (Ivan) Rakitic and (Ivan) Perisic,” Pogba said.

“Even their defenders are outstanding players. I don’t think there is a plan just for Modric. The plan is to win the match.”

Belgium lacked magic in World Cup semi-final defeat to France – Martinez

Roberto Martinez attributed Belgium’s inability to “create a little bit of magic” to their World Cup semi-final defeat to France.

Samuel Umtiti’s second-half header edged a tight contest in Saint Petersburg in France’s favour, meaning it will be bronze at best for Belgium’s golden generation at Russia 2018.

“It was a very tight game, there were not many big moments that were going to decide the game,” Belgium head coach Martinez told FIFA.com

“The difference between the defeat and winning was down to one dead-ball situation, that’s how close the game was.

“We have to give a lot of credit to the way France defended, even having certain attacking players defending very deep and giving us a lot of respect in that way.

“We couldn’t find the little bit of magic in front of goal or a little bit of luck at times.

“But if you’re going to lose a game, I’m so proud of the players – you lose with a lot of effort, giving everything you’ve got, driving until the last second.

“You have to accept it, congratulate France and wish them well for the final.”

Belgium will remain in Saint Petersburg for Saturday’s play-off against the losers on Wednesday’s semi-final between England and Croatia.

France defeat Belgium to reach 2018 World Cup final

France will face England or Croatia in the World Cup final after edging past European neighbours Belgium in the semi-final in St Petersburg.

Defender Samuel Umtiti scored the winning goal for the 1998 champions in the second half with a towering header from Antoine Griezmann’s corner.

Didier Deschamps’ side were on the back foot for large periods of the game, but emerged victorious to reach their third final, having been beaten by Italy on penalties in 2006.

Belgium came through the quarter-finals by impressively beating Brazil, but they were unable to find the equaliser, as Axel Witsel’s powerful, long-range drive was pushed away by Hugo Lloris, who also brilliantly kept out Toby Alderweireld’s turn and shot.

At the final whistle, the France substitutes ran on the pitch to celebrate with the players, while manager Deschamps was mobbed by his staff before dancing around in a circle.

England play Croatia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in the second semi-final on Wednesday and the final takes places at the same venue on Sunday.

2018 World Cup: Who wears the crown… the favourites or underdogs?

The 21st edition of the World Cup is nearing a conclusion and some of the best players in world football have graced the stage in Russia. With 32 teams taking part it can be difficult to predict a winner, but some teams are inevitably better equipped than others when it comes to personnel.

However, at every major tournament there is always room for a dark horse to upset the established order and that has certainly been the case in Russia.

With teams whittled down to four, who’s the favourite to win the 2018 World Cup?

Favourites to win the 2018 World Cup

Russia 2018 has already seen a number of the pre-tournament favourites drop out of the running, with the likes of Germany, Spain and Brazil all crashing out at various stages.

As well as that, strong outsiders such as Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were dumped out in the last 16, and the make-up of the last four is not what many may have predicted.

France are now the clear favourites to win the competition, 20 years after their first and only triumph, and made great strides towards the World Cup final after defeating Uruguay 2-0 in the quarter-final.

It is not surprising to see Les Bleus so highly rated ( 2/1 according to dabblebet ) considering that Didier Deschamps has an impressive pool of talent to draw from, which includes the likes of Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann. They are through to the semi-finals after defeating Argentina and Uruguay in the last 16 and quarter-finals respectively.

Perennial dark horses Belgiumarrived in Russia with a ‘Golden Generation’ – including players like Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku – which has now reached a level of maturity that should see them mount a serious challenge, something that is reflected in their price of 11/4.

The Red Devils will face France in the last four of the competition, which will be a monumental task for both teams in the race to reach the final.

It is likely that whoever comes out on top in the France vs Belgium semi-final will be considered the outright favourite to lift the trophy in Moscow on July 15.

    World Cup 2018 underdogs

Over the years England have had to contend with the pressure of expectation at successive World Cups, but that did not exist in the build-up to the 2018 edition. In terms of star quality, Gareth Southgate’s side is a far cry from the ‘Golden Generation’ that fell short in the 2000s and they have been relying on the talents of Harry Kane in particular – who still remains as the competition’s top-scorer.

Having qualified from Group G as runners-up behind Belgium, the Three Lions emerged victorious in a last-16 tie against Colombia through a penalty shootout and easily overcame Sweden in the quarter-final to reach the semi-final for the first time since 1990. Their odds have since thus shortened significantly to 5/2, with many English fans finally believing that ‘Football’s Coming Home’.

Croatia finished third at the World Cup in France 20 years ago but they have failed to replicate the same level of success since. Crashing out at the group stage in 2002, 2006 and 2014, their status as potential challengers was also undermined by the fact that they needed to qualify via the play-offs after being pipped by Iceland in their group.

However, with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric and Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic in their ranks, they boast the kind of talent other nations envy. Having started out as definite underdogs at 28/1, a crushing win over Argentina and penalty shootout victories over Denmark and hosts Russia have seen their odds shorten to 4/1. Interestingly, though, of the four teams left, Croatia are deemed least likely to triumph.

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored as France advanced to a World Cup semi-final against either Belgium or Brazil after easing past Uruguay on Friday.

Following an opening passage high on energy but bereft of quality, Varane glanced home a Griezmann free-kick to open the scoring before the Atletico Madrid man doubled France’s advantage just after the hour mark in a moment to forget for Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

But Nigerians are happy with the victory at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium as a revenge for Uruguay’s 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Ghana in South Africa 2010 and for Egypt’s 1-0 defeat during the group stage in this year’s edition.

[BREAKING] World Cup: France through to semi-finals after defeating Uruguay

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored as France advanced to a World Cup semi-final against either Belgium or Brazil after easing past Uruguay on Friday.

Following an opening passage high on energy but bereft of quality, Varane glanced home a Griezmann free-kick to open the scoring before the Atletico Madrid man doubled France’s advantage just after the hour mark in a moment to forget for Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Griezmann found space 25 yards out and fired in a shot that should have been routine for Muslera but the ball slipped through his grasp and into the net.

Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay, without injured striker Edinson Cavani, never looked like finding a route back into the game and France now await Friday’s late game to see who they will meet in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

The opening 40 minutes were notable only for Uruguay’s pressing and harassing of France whenever Didier Deschamps’ men were in possession, and a bad miss from Les Bleus’ golden boy Kylian Mbappe.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker, who scored twice in the 4-3 defeat of Argentina in the last 16, ought to have opened the scoring in Nizhny Novgorod but fluffed his lines horribly after 15 minutes.

After latching on to Olivier Giroud’s knockdown in the box, Mbappe had time and space to bring the ball down but instead attempted a header that drifted harmlessly over Muslera’s crossbar.

The game was crying out for some creativity and it arrived five minutes before the break. Griezmann’s inswinging free-kick from the right was met by Varane and his flicked header flashed past Muslera and into the bottom left corner.

Uruguay almost responded in similar fashion four minutes later but Martin Caceres’ header was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris low to his right and Diego Godin hammered the rebound wildly over.

France started the second half on the front foot but it was still a surprise when they made it 2-0 after 61 minutes. Muslera suggested the ball swerved but he should have got his body behind Griezmann’s shot and could only watch as it dropped apologetically into the net.

Uruguay substitute Cristian Rodriguez fired a shot a yard wide after 64 minutes but the South Americans were struggling to create anything and their frustration boiled over when Mbappe went down softly under a challenge from Rodriguez, prompting angry confrontations involving Godin, Nahitan Nandez and Paul Pogba.

Corentin Tolisso could have made it 3-0 to France after 73 minutes but curled over, while Griezmann also flashed a late free-kick over the top.

Uruguay centre-half Jose Gimenez was in tears with five minutes to go, such was his anguish as France cruised home.

  • Nigeria, France sign $475m agreement for projects in Lagos, Kano, others

Nigeria, France sign $475m agreement for projects in Lagos, Kano, others

Nigeria and France have signed agreements to carry out projects in Lagos, Kano and Ogun states at the cost of $475 million.

With respect to Lagos State, the agreement is a letter of intent for the financing of urban mobility improvement project via a loan of $200 million. This will involve the development of eight priority bus corridors connected to the Lagos mass transit network.

In Ogun State, a French firm will in conjunction with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), mobilise from investors about another $200 million for land reclamation to correct the massive degradation of arable land being witnessed in the state.

The Ogun project aims to reforest 108,000 hectares of depleting forest in Ogun state.

The state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who spoke with journalists at the State House presidential villa Abuja said the project was very vital not only in addressing climate change challenges and recreating the forest, but also in providing employment to the people of the state.

The agreements were signed by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday in Abuja after they held a bilateral meeting.

France will through its foreign development agency, Whence Francaise de Development (AFD), also extend a credit facility of $75 million towards improving water supply in Kano.

The concessional loan is expected to help Kano State government ensure more residents of the city have access to drinking water while improving the financial viability of the state water board to increase its revenues.

Both leaders also agreed to strengthen economic, sporting and cultural ties between their countries; as well as encourage youth empowerment in a bid to check poverty that causes many of the social vices rearing their heads.

Macron in a joint press conference with Buhari recalled his days in Nigeria about 15 years ago.

He said it was an emotional come-back for him, especially as he never imagined he would return to Abuja one day as president of France.

On his part, Buhari said the discussion centered on security in the Sahel and economic integration. He said they both talked about inter-basin transfer for Lake Chad.

Buhari also said one of the reasons he toured the neighbouring countries on assumption of office, which are all ex-French colonies, was because “it makes sense and cheaper to maintain security”.

Buhari also thanked the French President for his support on the fight against corruption.

“I am grateful to the French President for commitment and understanding as it concerns Nigeria and this region,” he said.

We need a new generation to speak about Africa everywhere- Macron

Emmanuel Macron, President of France, visited the New Afrika Shrine on Tuesday to install the African Cultural Season slated for 2020.

The epoch making event tagged ‘Celebration of African Culture’, recorded a large convergence of entertainers and politicians.

Macron said he chose to visit the Afrika Shrine because he has good memories of the place from 2004 when he worked in the state.

Speaking further, he described the Shrine as “a cultural hub” that is “very important for me first on a personal level”.

Macron emphasized on the need for young Nigerians to get involved in politics. He said African youth have a huge role to play in the future of the continent.

“I am very happy to be here. Let me remind you that this place — shrine is a music place as well as politics which is needed to change the society. So, I will say to the youths, politics is important, be involved,” he said.

“What we want to launch this evening is the African Cultural Season 2020. It will be for Africans by Africans. You will have artists, painters, fashion designers.

“It will be organised by Africans to show France and Europe what is here and it will be financed by African leaders.”

The French president said Africa needs a new narrative and that “we need to have African people speaking about Africa”.

“What we need is young people to make this narrative. Africa needs a new generation of artists, journalists, civil society, to speak about Africa everywhere.

“I have a huge debt to Femi, Fela, Seun and the Kuti family. The family provides, not just this place, but for its time, its commitment, and especially the different battles of Fela, a very strong message, a message that it is possible, even now to decide your own future. Never forget.”

A short skit directed by Kunle Afolayan featured several Nollywood stars including Jide Kosoko, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Joke Silva, Dakore Akande, Rita Dominic and a host of others.

  • Organise yourselves, fix your problems! Macron blasts African leaders

Organise yourselves, fix your problems! Macron blasts African leaders

French President, Emmanuel Macron, on Tuesday, at a press conference after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, challenged African leaders to study their continent’s problems and fix it once and for all rather than depending on foreign nations to do it for them.

He noted specifically that France would not be the one to completely fix African problems.

He said, “I think the main plan is an African plan and France is not the one to solve or fix African situations.

So, what we want to do is that we will intervene and make our presence in Africa and Sahel to fight against terrorism especially in Mali and in the region.

We will stay as long as it is requested by our friends, especially Mali. We discussed yesterday (Monday) about this issue.

But what is important to me is how the different African governments organise themselves to fight against terrorism and get rid of these people and especially Jihadism. That’s why I do promote the G5/Sahel Initiatives and I think as far as we are organised, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon is very important.”

Macron said it was important for countries to increase the pressure against Jihadists.

We can fix the situation in the coming month and obviously France will remain present in Mali for as long as they want it.

But when I look at the past months, we have increased our resource and delivered concrete results in the north and west Mali with positive outcomes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Buhari and Macron witnessed the signing of a letter of intent for the financing of the urban mobility improvement programme initiated by the Lagos State Government.

The signing took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja during a bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

The letter of intent of the equivalent of $200m is related to a potential loan by the French Development Agency to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It was signed by the AFD’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Remy Rioux, and the Nigerian Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun.

The project seeks to develop eight priority bus corridors connected to the mass transit network (urban train and high-level service bus with a total length of 41 kilometres).

It will also create two multimodal interchange hubs and functional integration of four public transport modes- urban train, high-level bus service, water transport lines and bus lines, planning and management capabilities of the transportation system.

The project which follows the successful urban development of the second Lagos BRT project, already funded by AFD, is aimed at contributing to Lagos sustainable urban development through the deployment of a public transport network combining quality service, efficiency, accessibility, reliability, safety, reduction of polluting emissions and socio-economic and financial sustainability.

It also aimed at giving 1,500,000 inhabitants access to quality transportation

The two leaders also witnessed the signing of a credit of facility agreement of $75m in order to improve water supply in Kano city.

This concessional loan was awarded by AFD to the Federal Government to allow Kano State to develop an effective and sustainable water supply service.

The project mainly comprises the rehabilitation and densification of the network, rehabilitation of the main water production facilities and supporting consumer awareness campaign.

Macron also justified his decision to visit the Afrika Shrine in Lagos during his visit to Nigeria.

First, because I wanted to find a good occasion to come back there. I know the place and I have some memories, I have to confess at a time that there was no President around; I hope I will not spoil the party.

I think that is such an iconic place for a lot of African people and African culture. And I think very often when you speak of the African culture in Europe, those who succeed in Europe and in France, which is different most of the times, are not dramatically very famous in Nigeria or in Africa.”

There is a bias because you know people are absolutely not the same. I mean Fela, Femi, Seun Kuti are obviously very famous in France and Europe, I mean they are big successes but the Shrine is a cultural hub, an iconic hub and is very important for me first on a personal level, and that is why I want to say with a lot of humility that I recognise the importance of this place; I recognise the place of culture in this current environment,” he said.

Buhari said the issues of security and economic integration came up during his discussion with Macron.

He thanked the French President for his commitment and understanding as it concerns Nigeria and the region.

He said it was a good idea that Macron would be visiting the Africa Shrine in Lagos.
