Euro 2024: Spain zoom into final, defeat France 2-1

The La Roja of Spain on Tuesday night zoomed into the final of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament after defeating France 2-1 at the Munich Arena in Germany.

The Les Blues of France took the lead inside
8th minute through Randal Kolo Muani but Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo reacted quickly with two goals in the first half to turn the table around for Spain

16-year -old  Yamal scored a wondergoal to become the youngest scorer in men’s European Championship history.

The youngster fired a stunning strike into the top cover from outside the penalty area to equalise after Randal Kolo Muani’s early opener in the semi-final in Munich.

Teammate, Olmo then struck moments later to give Spain the lead, as his goal-bound shot deflected in off France defender Jules Kounde to go past Maignan in goal.

A tight affair in the second half saw the two teams manage few shots on target each.

All efforts to score on both ends proved abortive in the second 45 minutes of the thrilling encounter.

The result meant Spain will face either of England or Netherlands who play in the second semi -final on Wednesday.

The Euro 2024 final will be played in Munich on Sunday, July 14th.

Euro 2024: France to slug it out with Spain for a place in the final today

Spain versus France, two football heavyweights will clash tonight in a  mouth-watering semifinal clash between both the current and pre-tournament favourites.

The talismanic Kylian Mbappe will lead the line for the French, while promising young winger Lamine Yamal is also catching the eye. However, France’s form has faltered, despite expectations that they would dominate the competition.

Despite reaching the final of the last two World Cups—winning in Russia in 2018 and narrowly losing on penalties to Argentina in Qatar in 2022—France’s Euros record under coach Didier Deschamps is less impressive. In his 12 years, their best result was a runner-up spot in 2016 on home soil.

In the quarterfinals, France edged past Portugal on penalties, with Mbappe being substituted after spending more time adjusting his mask than threatening the opposition goal.

Mbappe’s form, after sustaining a broken nose in France’s opener, and the form of forward Antoine Griezmann remain significant question marks ahead of the clash with Spain, who knocked out hosts Germany with a goal in extra time.

“I don’t give a damn [about the critics],” midfielder Youssouf Fofana told a press conference on Sunday. “We are semifinalists. Questions about the level of Antoine and Kylian? We have to realize that being in the semifinals is enough. So I don’t see why we would nitpick.”

The second semi – final will see England do battle with Netherlands on Wednesday

Macron rejects PM Attal’s resignation, asks him to stay

French President Emmanuel Macron is refusing to accept Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s resignation following the surprising outcome of the snap parliamentary elections in France, the Élysée Palace annnounced on Monday.

Macron has asked Attal to remain prime minister for the time being in order to ensure the country’s stability, it said.

Attal announced his resignation on Sunday evening after the preliminary results were announced.

Official results released by the Interior Ministry on Monday showed the French left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP) emerged as the surprise victor in Sunday’s run-off election but it failed to win an absolute majority.

The new alliance did not go into the elections with a lead candidate.

Macron’s centrist Ensemble bloc came in second place.

Marine Le Pen’s far-right nationalist National Rally (RN), initially seen as the favourite after the first round of voting, came third.

None of the groups achieved an absolute majority, making the formation of a government difficult.

France’s Prime Minister, Atal set to resign today

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced he would offer his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, following his party’s failure to secure a majority in the parliamentary elections. However, he stated he was prepared to remain in office “as long as duty demands,” especially with the Paris Olympics set to begin in three weeks.

In a surprising turn of events, an alliance of French left-wing parties was on track to become the largest parliamentary bloc, surpassing both the far right and President Macron’s coalition. No single group achieved an absolute majority, leaving France in political uncertainty just two days before a significant NATO summit and three weeks before the Paris Olympics.

The New Popular Front (NFP) — established last month after Macron called for snap elections — united the previously divided Socialists, Greens, Communists, and the hard-left France Unbowed into a single camp. Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) led the initial round of voting on June 30, with opinion polls predicting it would become the largest party in parliament after Sunday’s run-off.

Despite this, projections based on vote samples from four major polling agencies on Sunday indicated no group was on track for an absolute majority, with the left-wing NFP leading Macron’s centrist Ensemble and Le Pen’s eurosceptic, anti-immigration RN.

An aide reported that Macron, who has not yet publicly addressed the projections, called for “prudence and analysis of the results.” Le Pen remarked, “The tide is rising. It did not rise high enough this time, but it continues to rise and, consequently, our victory has only been delayed.”

FRANCE: Massive voters turnout as Far Right eyes huge gains

French voters turned out in large numbers Sunday for the final round of a high-stakes election that is expected to leave the far right as the biggest force in a deeply divided parliament.

By 5:00 pm (1500 GMT), according to interior ministry figures, some 59.71 percent of voters had turned out — the most at this stage of a legislative race since 1981, with three hours of polling to go.

President Emmanuel Macron called the snap elections three years ahead of time after his forces were trounced in June’s European parliament vote, a gamble which seems to have backfired.

The mood in France is tense, with 30,000 police deployed to head off trouble and voters anxious about a potential electoral earthquake shifting the political landscape.

In the village of Rosheim, outside the eastern city of Strasbourg, an “anguished” 72-year-old Antoine Schrameck said he feared France would see “a turning point in the history of the republic”.

And in Tourcoing, near the northeast city of Lille, 66-year-old retiree Laurence Abbad said she feared violence after the results are announced. “There’s so much tension, people are going mad,” she said.

The president was to assemble Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and the leaders of the parties in his outgoing centrist coalition at the Elysee Palace while voting continued, sources in his camp told AFP.

Tired Mbappe asked to go off against Portugal – Deschamps

French striker and captain Kylian Mbappe, asked to be substituted during extra-time in the Euro 2024 quarter-final win over Portugal because he was tired, his coach Didier Deschamps said.

The usually prolific Mbappe has not been at his best during the Euros, scoring once from the penalty spot against Poland, but otherwise failing to convert chances and looking uncomfortable in a mask.

This was after he broke his nose in the first game.

Against Portugal in the quarter-finals on Friday night, he spent time on the ground and briefly removed his mask.

This was following a hard hit from the ball on the side of his face, before later asking to be taken off and missing the shootout.

“Yes, he’s always very honest with me and the team, when he feels he doesn’t have the capacity to accelerate…

“He’s not at his top form … he felt very tired indeed,” Deschamps said, referring to muscle fatigue and the nose issue.

“I saw him struggling during the first period of extra time. It was pointless (to leave him on).

“Kylian has always been honest with me and the group, so it was only natural to bring in some new blood.”

In his absence, Mbappe’s teammates did him proud, scoring a perfect five penalties to beat Portugal 5-3.

Euro 2024: Portugal kiss tournament goodbye, lose 5-4 on penalties to France

The Les Blues of France on Friday night at Hamburg saw off Portugal 5-4 on penalties after regulation time and extra time ended goalless at the ongoing Euro 2024.

Joao Felix missed Portugal’s fourth spot kick as his shot hit the outside of the post to gift France the advantage.

France’s Theo Hernandez stepped up and converted the 5th penalty to send the Les Bleus to the semi -final of the competition.

Between the two teams, Portugal had the better chances to kill off the game but weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.

Mbappe had to be substituted in extra time after an earlier whack to his face, covered with a mask due to a broken nose, thus missing out completely in the penalty shoot out.

Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha were both denied by goalkeeper Mike Maignan before France’s Randal Kolo Muani had a shot deflected inches wide by Ruben Dias.

The results meant  France will now face Spain in the semi-finals in Munich on Tuesday.

Olympic committee opens up on cancelling Paris Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has dismissed speculation about a cancellation or postponement of the upcoming Paris Games due to the political situation in France.

It said it was part of a disinformation campaign.

Reports had suggested that IOC president Thomas Bach was concerned after France’s far-right National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, topped the first round of voting for a new parliament.

The second round of voting is set for Sunday.

Magazine Le Point had suggested that Bach had given a mid-July deadline, whether the Games would go ahead as planned July 26 to Aug. 11, but the IOC was quick to dismiss this.

“This is obviously part of the on-going disinformation campaign against France, the IOC, and its president, and the Olympic Games.

“It has no factual basis whatsoever,” the IOC said late Wednesday on platform X.

“The IOC president and the entire Olympic movement are looking forward with great anticipation to excellent Olympic Games Paris 2024,”he said.

French organisers said they would investigate the origin of the reports, and sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra dismissed them as “indecent fake news” on X.

“Our Games will indeed be held in Paris, on the scheduled dates. We have been preparing for them for years; they will bring happiness to the whole world and pride to our country,” she said.
