FRSC warns of heavy traffic on Kubwa expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday alerted motorists on heavy traffic along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja following an accident.

The accident involved a trailer that obstructed movement on the busy route.

In a statement posted on its official social media handle, the corps described the situation as an “unusual traffic gridlock,” adding that emergency teams had been mobilised to clear the obstruction.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps wishes to inform the public that there is an unusual traffic gridlock along Kubwa expressway caused by a fallen trailer.

“While efforts are being made to remove the obstruction, motorists are advised to be patient and ply the road with caution,” the FRSC said.

According to the corps, personnel are managing traffic flow at the scene while recovery operations continue to restore normal movement.

The corps appealed to all road users to remain calm, obey traffic instructions and exercise patience until the expressway is fully cleared.

NAN reports that the Kubwa corridor is one of the busiest access routes between satellite towns and the Abuja city centre, and any disruption often resulted in long vehicular queues.

Fatal crash claims 4 lives on Benin–Sagamu Road

Four people were confirmed dead on Tuesday, while eight others sustained injuries in a fatal motor accident along the Benin–Sagamu Road in Edo.

Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the casualties during a briefing with journalists in Benin.

The crash occurred at the Ovia Bridge axis in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, when a truck from Lagos reportedly lost control and struck five vehicles.

Mathew said 19 passengers were involved, comprising 14 men, four women, and one male child.

He explained that three victims trapped in their vehicles died instantly, while another died later at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

This brought the total number of deaths to four.

The FRSC commander identified speed and loss of concentration as the major causes of the accident.

He urged motorists to maintain their vehicles, observe regulated speed limits, and remain cautious of road conditions.

FRSC warns against certificates from unaccredited driving schools

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned it will not accept certificates from unaccredited driving schools to process driver’s licence.

FRSC’s Sector Commander in Oyo, State, Mrs Rosemary Alo, gave the warning in an interview with NAN on Sunday in Ibadan.

Alo urged citizens to always verify the status of a driving school from appropriate quarters before enrolling for the driving course to avoid waste of time and resources.

“We are organising regular training for driving schools instructors, so as to equip them with requisite knowledge needed to train prospective drivers.

“People should always ensure that they register with FRSC accredited driving schools.

“Anyone undergoing training from an uncertified school will not only be badly tutored, but also waste time and money invested in the training.

“FRSC will not accept certificates from such unaccredited schools for the processing of driver’s licence,” she said.

Alo reiterated the importance of obtaining a certificate from an accredited driving school to get a driver’s licence.

The commander said that driving schools must meet specific standards, including having qualified instructors, roadworthy vehicles for training, and necessary facilities.

“Standards are required to ensure that driving schools provide quality training, reduce the risk of accidents and enhance road safety, “ she said.

Alo warned that any driving school caught for non-compliance would face appropriate sanctions, including either suspension or withdrawal of certificates.

  • 411 Nigerians die from scooping fuel – FRSC

411 Nigerians die from scooping fuel – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Benue Sector Command, has disclosed that 411 Nigerians lost their lives while scooping fuel from fallen tankers in 2024.

The Sector Commander, Mr Steve Ayodele, made the disclosure in Makurdi on Tuesday at a town hall meeting with trailer and tanker drivers on crash prevention.

Ayodele said that the number represents 7.6 per cent of total road traffic deaths in 2024 alone, noting it was beyond fatalities.

The sector commander said that the town hall meeting with the theme “Discourage Fuel Scooping and Other Anti-Road Traffic Attitudes” was to mitigate such crashes.

“Tanker explosions often cause life-threatening burns and destroy shops, vehicles, and infrastructure, while also deepening the economic hardships of victims’ families.

“Fuel scooping and other anti-traffic behaviours were turning avoidable road accidents into major disasters.

“Tanker and trailer crashes often leave behind devastating consequences, worsening tragedies with unsafe conduct of people at crash sites.

“Fuel scooping, reckless driving, disobedience to traffic rules, and roadside trading near accident-prone areas are actions that put lives at risk.

“Fuel scooping has become one of the deadliest practices on Nigerian roads. Instead of recognising spilt fuel as a hazard, many Nigerians rush to collect it.

“We have witnessed tragic incidents where lives were lost due to fires caused by this reckless act,” Ayodele said.

The sector commander stressed that unregulated driving hours, overloaded tankers, and inadequate safety inspections remain major contributors to accidents.

He called on participants, including drivers, community leaders, and government agencies, to commit to changing attitudes and protecting lives.

Mr Babalola Sheba, Head of Operations, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), decried the environmental and health hazards linked to fuel scooping.

He warned that fuel spills pollute the soil, water, and air, contaminate drinking water, and harm agriculture and aquatic life.

Sheba, who said that inhaling fuel fumes can also cause respiratory problems and skin irritation, stated that the agency had resolved to mandate the installation of anti-spill safety valves and speed limiters on all petroleum product tanker trucks.

He said that the agency had introduced a colour-coding system for fuel trucks.

He disclosed that light blue is for petrol, deep yellow and light blue for diesel, deep yellow for kerosene, black for aviation fuel, and deep green for biofuels.

Mr Emmanuel Ogbanje, State Coordinator, Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service, in Benue, emphasised that preventing fuel scooping required a culture of regular vehicle inspection, compliance with axle load regulations, and strict adherence to traffic laws.

Ogbanje said that safety was not a goal but a continuous process and urged drivers to always carry valid licences, avoid overloading, and report unsafe practices.

He called for increased public education and collaboration among stakeholders to build a culture of road safety across the state and beyond.

  • FRSC warns Nigerians against recruitment scams

FRSC warns Nigerians against recruitment scams

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned the public to be cautious of fraudulent recruitment schemes being carried out by scammers, some of whom impersonate FRSC personnel.

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), Olusegun Ogungbemide.

Ogungbemide expressed concern over the increasing activities of fraudsters who deceived and extorted unsuspecting Nigerians with false promises of job offers within the Corps.

He revealed that those scammers even go as far as issuing fake call-up letters to FRSC training schools and the FRSC Academy in a bid to mislead job seekers and collect money from them.

The CPEO emphasised that FRSC’s recruitment process was strictly transparent, merit-based, and officially communicated only through national newspapers, TV stations, and the Corps’ verified platforms.

“At no point has the Corps authorised any personnel or representative to request money or any form of gratification from applicants for employment,” he stated.

Ogungbemide, therefore, urged Nigerians to disregard any suspicious recruitment offers and report such activities to the nearest FRSC Command, relevant law enforcement agencies, or through official FRSC channels.

He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to integrity, fairness, and transparency in all its recruitment processes.

The public was further advised to remain vigilant and confirm all recruitment-related information via official FRSC sources. These include the Corps’ website at www.frsc.gov.ng.

FRSC fingers police as two die In Ebonyi auto crash

Two persons have been confirmed dead and three others injured in a ghastly motor accident that occurred near the permanent site of Ebonyi State University, Ishieke, along the Abakaliki–Enugu Expressway of Ebonyi State.

Confirming the tragic incident to newsmen on Saturday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, Anthony Ogbodo, said that the tragic crash involved a commercial bus carrying 10 passengers and a Mercedes-Benz 911 truck transporting sachet water from Enugu to Abakaliki.

It was gathered that the accident happened as a result of the partial blockage of one lane of the federal highway by security personnel attached to the Ishieke Police Station, a measure residents of the area reportedly said has contributed to a series of recent accidents recorded in the area.

Ogbodo also attributed the crash to reckless driving compounded by the road obstruction.

“The passenger bus was coming from Otukpo, Benue State, and the truck from Enugu to Abakaliki,” Ogbodo explained.

“At night, the police at that junction blocked one of the lanes. Closing one lane of the road contributed to the accident.”

He further disclosed that 10 passengers were on board the bus, eight males and two females.

“Three were injured and two died, a male and a female,” he said.

Ogbodo said the injured victims are receiving medical treatment, while the corpses have been deposited at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Abakaliki.

He also lamented that the continued practice of blocking one side of the expressway has created unnecessary hazards for road users.

“Dangerous driving combined with the obstruction is a recipe for disaster,” he warned.

  • FRSC dismisses resurfaced Benin viral video as old

FRSC dismisses resurfaced Benin viral video as old

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged the public to disregard an old viral video circulating on social media showing a tricycle rider, unclad, violently confronting its operatives in Benin, Edo State.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), Corps Public Education Officer, (CPEO), said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ogungbemide said the video, which resurfaced recently, was not a new development but an incident that occurred on July 16, 2020 along the Benin–Sapele Road, and had since been resolved both legally and administratively.

He said that the recirculation of the video was a calculated attempt by mischievous handlers to attract traffic to their social media pages.

This, he said, was aimed to misinform the public and stir unnecessary emotions over a matter long concluded.

According to him, the tricycle rider, identified as Mr. Adeshine Adeyemo, was arraigned in court with case file number MEV/117C/2020 before His Worship, Magistrate F. Ojehumen of the Evbuoriaria Magistrate Court, Benin City.

Ogungbemide said that Adeyemo was found guilty on Jan. 11, 2021, and sentenced to three months imprisonment for malicious damage and breach of public peace.

He added that an internal disciplinary panel was also instituted to investigate the conduct of the personnel involved in the incident as captured in the viral video.

“After due process, the seven-man patrol team was tried and sanctioned with reduction in rank for unprofessional and unethical behaviour during the encounter.

“They were also redeployed from their previous command in line with the Corps’ zero tolerance posture against incivility and misconduct,” he said.

Ogungbemide reiterated that while the FRSC would not condone attacks or molestation of its operatives and installations, it also would not spare any personnel found guilty of professional misconduct.

He emphasised that the re-emergence of the video at this time might create unnecessary panic and mislead unsuspecting members of the public into believing it was recent.

“The FRSC therefore urges the general public to disregard the video as an old story, already addressed comprehensively through judicial conviction of the offender and disciplinary sanctions on the staff involved,” he said.

Ogungbemide reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safer roads and a more civil relationship between its operatives and the motoring public.

He appealed to citizens to cooperate with law enforcement officers, assuring that the FRSC would continue to uphold professionalism, discipline and respect for human dignity in carrying out its statutory duties.

He said that the incident involved 19 persons, with 12 persons died, five others sustained varying degrees of injuries and two unhurt.

The sector commander explained that the accident occurred when the trailer lost control and crashed because its cab detached from its body due to a mechanical failure in the trailer’s cab hook.

The sector commander cautioned drivers against speeding, dangerous driving, and other unwholesome practices that might endanger lives and property.
