Multiple road accident leaves 16 dead on the spot

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 16 persons in an accident involving multiple vehicles at the Ojoo-Iwo Road axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Tuesday.

Spokesperson, FRSC, Oyo State Sector Command, Mr Mayowa Odewo, disclosed this in Ibadan, saying 17 other people sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accident.

He said two people were injury-free of the 35 people, made up of 14 male adults, 10 female adults, six female children and five male children involved in the accident.

Odewo attributed the cause of the accident, involving four vehicles, to the brake failure of a Mack truck, marked AKM 548 ZY.

According to him, the other vehicles include a Nissan commercial bus, MUB 20 LG; a Nissan Micra taxi, BDJ 520 YC; and a private Honda Accord SUV, KRD 707 ER.

He said the 17 injured victims had been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention while the corpses were handed over to the police.

“The accidented vehicles have been taken to Irepodun Police Station, along Agbowo-Ojoo Road, by the police.

“Sadly, no victim was saved by seat belts or other defensive gadgets,” he said.

FRSC addresses national driver’s licence delay

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has responded to a media publication regarding the delay in issuing National Driver’s Licences across the country.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, Corps Public Education and Strategic Communication Officer (CPESCO), said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Ogungbemide, who applauded the media platform for its watchdog role, said it was pertinent to correct some of the misconceptions conveyed in the publication.

This, he said, was to avert misleading the general public on what had actually hampered the smooth production of the National Driver’s Licence.

“The attention of the FRSC has been adequately drawn to an article published by The Sun Newspaper today, 11 August.

“To state the obvious fact and correct the misinformation stated in the above-quoted article, it is pertinent to say that at no time did the FRSC blame anyone in the tripartite regarding the driver’s licence issue.

“This is because the Corps does not believe in apportioning blame, but is keenly interested in getting the system to work for quality service delivery and customer satisfaction,” he said.

Ogungbemide said the entire processes surrounding the production of the national driver’s licence were delicate.

This, he said, was due to the intelligence and data-gathering ability of the scheme, adding that the Corps had to subject the entire system to a comprehensive overhaul.

He said, however, the efforts needed time to be brought to perfection.

“On assumption of office in May 2024, one of the priority areas the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, committed his administrative energy to, was the total revamp of the national driver’s licence production.

To nip the problem in the bud, he visited the production plant to have an on-the-spot assessment of the issues militating against the smooth flow of production.

“Aftermath of that visit revived the system and brought the plant up to speed.”

He said that the identified issues were decisively dealt with, fixed and production resumed in full force, pursuant to his directive for the plant to commence 24-hour production.

“Due to that intervention, the Corps can categorically state that every issue affecting the smooth running of the plant is being resolved.

“As at today, over 189,256 licences have been produced and are awaiting collection at various State Boards of Internal Revenue across the country,” he said.

Ogungbemide quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal as reassuring that, in line with his policy thrust, the integrity of the licence process would be upheld at all times to sustain international acceptability.

He admonished applicants awaiting their licences to proceed to their respective states for collection as the Corps continue its quest to clear the backlog.

Fasakin was reacting to an accident in which a drunk driver knocked down two pedestrians along the Epe area of Lagos State on Saturday.

According to him, the driver or owner of the vehicle has been declared wanted by the Nigerian Police Force.

“The FRSC is sending a warning note to drivers who engage in drunk driving, as they will be apprehended after testing positive in a sobriety test.

11 persons killed in Kaduna road accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, said 11 people lost their lives while four others sustained injuries in a crash in Gwargwaje, Zaria Local Government Area.

The Sector Commander, Kabir Nadabo, who confirmed the incident on Friday in Kaduna, said:

“A crash involving a truck with registration number BAU 142 XA and a Golf salon with registration number FST 134 FX occurred at Gwargwaje, Zaria in the early hours of Friday, at precisely, 05:50 a.m.

“A team of policemen attached to the Gwargwaje Division conducted the rescue and informed the Unit Commander, RS1.3 Zaria, after they had finished.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the golf, carrying 11 people, all males, had engaged on a route violation, with no headlights and collided with an oncoming MAN truck with four people on board.

“The fatal crash resulted in the instant death of all the 11 people in the golf while the four people in the truck sustained injuries,” he said.

Nadabo said that after the rescue, a team from FRSC Zaria Unit arrived and conveyed the corpses and the injured to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika.

He recalled that Sector Commander RS1.1 Kaduna had intimated him on the appeal by the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmad  Bamalli, to  create an outpost at Gwargwaje to monitor and checkmate the excesses of motorists.

Nadabo said that some motorists had engaged in route violation on the busy highway, when the sector commander paid the emir a courtesy visit in September, 2023

“Gwargwaje has a roadside market with commercial activities. However, the long stretch U-turn makes it difficult for commercial riders to go round, hence they resort to route violation.

“I am passionately appealing for the Corps Marshal’s consideration to establish an Outpost at Gwargwaje.

“This will help stop route violation thereby saving lives and properties of motorists and commuters plying the busy highway,” Nadabo said.
