    New FRSC boss pledges to end number plates, drivers licence delay

    The new Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohmmed, says modalities have been put in place to eliminate delay in accessing drivers licence and number plates.

    Mohammed gave the assurance  in Abuja at a reception organised in his honour by the Alumnus of College of Advance Studies (CAS) Zaria on Saturday.

    The corps marshal said  he would address the incessant complaint of delay in accessing number plates and drivers licence, especially in the FCT.

    “I went on a facility assessment in our FCT office today, the causes of the delay are numerous, some are internal, while others are technical and financial,’’ he said.

    The FRSC boss said that he had summoned the technical partners and supervisors to find immediate and lasting solutions to the problem.

    “I want to assure you that the number plate’s problems will be over, and FCT is our priority,’’ Mohammed said.

    He also spoke on efforts being made by the FRSC to reduce the rate of traffic accidents and ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations.

    He, therefore, solicited the support of all Nigerians, particularly motorists to make Nigerian roads safer for all.

    “I have more than 36,000 staff with 600 formations nationwide, but it is a herculean task, and I need your support,’’ he added.

    The new Corps Marshal expressed appreciation for the solidarity and recognition by the association.

    “It is gratifying for me to interact with my school and classmates of whom I am meeting today after many years,’’ he said.

    He described his appointment as destined by God and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Tinubu.

    In his address, the Chairman of the Alumni association, Comrade Kabiru Shehu, said the reception was organised to honor the corpse marshal for attaining the peak of his career.

    “Shehu Mohmmed was known to be a brilliant, intelligent and humble student, this is what led to his success,’’ he said.

    He urged the new corps marshal to work hard towards improving the operations of the organisation.

    Hit-and-run driver kills woman in Anambra

    A driver hit and killed a female pedestrian along Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra on Friday night,  according to the state Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, who told newsmen on Saturday in Awka, said that the driver fled the scene after the incident.

    Irelewuyi said that the likely cause of the accident was speeding.

    He said that the crash involved an unidentified driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with no registration number, enroute Upper Iweke, Onitsha.

    “According to eyewitness report, the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, rammed into a pedestrian female adult and zoomed off.

    “FRSC rescue team arrived the scene and took the victim to Toronto Mortuary after the doctor confirmed her death,” he said.

    While condoling with the family of the dead, Irelewuyi cautioned motorists on speeding, especially during the rainy season.

    He urged them to ensure they keep to specified  speed limits.

    New FRSC Corps Marshal approves redeployment of 5 senior officers

    Mr Shehu Mohammed, the newly appointed Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) has approved the redeployment of five senior officers.

    This is contained in a statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide, Corps Commander, Corps Public Education Officer on Wednesday in Abuja.

    The Corps Marshal said that the redeployment was in line with his policy thrust targeted at strategic repositioning of the Corps for optimal performance and ease of doing business.

    Mohammed named them in the category of three Assistant Corps Marshals, One Corps Commander and One Deputy Corps Commander.

    He directed them to report to their new duty posts with immediate effect.

    “The affected Officers are Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, the erstwhile Public Education Officer is now redeployed to head the Administration and Human Resources Department, headquarters Abuja.

    “Assistant Corps Marshal, Chidi Nkwonta, former Commandant, FRSC Command and Staff College Udi, Enugu State takes over duty as the Principal Staff Officer to the Corps Marshal.

    “Nkwonta is taking over from Assistant Corps Marshal, Hafeez Muhammed, who has been redeployed as Zonal Commanding Officer Zone 7,’’ he said.

    In the same vein, the corps marshal also approved the redeployment of Corps Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide, as the new Public Education Officer.

    Before his redeployment, the new spokesperson was in charge of Command Administration and Strategy in the Operations Department at the Headquarters.

    Mohammed also appointed Deputy Corps Commander, Wasiu Adenekan as the Technical Advisor to the Corps Marshal and head of the Corps Information Technology Office respectively.

    He charged them to remain steadfast in their commitment, dedication to duties, and to share in the FRSC’s vision of making Nigerian roads safer for all motorists.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that  Mohammed had while reading out his policy thrust on Wednesday, said that his administration was committed to playing critical role.

    Mohammed also said that it was towards the realisation of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu safer road, hence the strategic redeployment.

    President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Corps Marshal Mohammed Shehu as the Corps Marshal/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

    Segun Imohiosen, Director, Information and  Public Relations, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

    According to Imohiosen, the appointment is for an initial period of four years, with effect from May 20, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Act establishing the Commission.

    “President Tinubu tasks the appointee to bring his wealth of experience to bear, in his new assignment.”

    FRSC confirms 7 dead in Ibadan road crash

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of seven persons in a road accident that occurred on Ibadan-Iseyin road on Thursday evening.

    The Public Relations Officer, FRSC, Oyo Sector Command, Mr Mayowa Odewo, said the deceased were five male adults, one female adult and one female child.

    Odewo said that 15 people also sustained varying degrees of injuries out of the 22 people involved in the crash.

    He attributed the accident, involving a Nissan Urvan commercial bus, with registration number: SEY 254 ZY and a Mazda commercial bus, with registration number LGB 343 XA, to speed violations and fatigue.

    Odewo stated that the 13 injured victims, including three male adults, nine female adults and one female child, had been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

    He said that four of the seven corpses of the victims had been claimed by their families, while the remaining three had been deposited at a morgue.

    “The police from Motor Traffic Division (MTD) Police Division, Moniya, Ibadan, have taken possession of the two crashed vehicles, including bags and other valuables recovered from the victims,” he said.

    The FRSC spokesperson noted that no victim was saved by seat belt or other defensive gadgets.

    He urged motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations as well as adhere to all traffic cautions on the road to prevent avoidable crashes.

    FRSC cautions convoy drivers against speeding

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has cautioned convoy drivers against  speeding to avoid crashes in the state.

    Mr Ezekiel SonAllah, the FRSC Sector Commander, gave this counsel on Saturday in Akure.

    He spoke against the backdrop of an accident which occurred involving a convoy in the state.

    SonAllah said that the crash which occurred involved a commercial Toyota Bus marked FNN612AA and a Toyota Hilux whose number plate was unavailable.

    “Eleven people were injured in the crash which occurred at 3:55pm on Saturday at Ajue along Ore/Ondo route, while two female adults were saved by their seatbelt.

    “A total of fifteen persons were involved in the accident. Eight male adults and three female adults were injured and taken to the hospital.

    “The injured victims were taken to the Ondo State Trauma and Surgical Centre, Ondo, before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team.

    “The remaining injured victims were taken to the General Hospital, Ore by the FRSC rescue team,” the sector commander said.

    He said that the two crashed vehicles were handed over to the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Nigeria Police at Ajue.

    “So, convoy drivers should be extremely careful when driving and also avoid speeding.

    “Drivers need to remember that excess speed kills and that it is a must for motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations on the road,” SonAllah said.

    19 burnt to death in Kogi auto crash

    At least 19 persons were burnt to death in an auto crash on Okene Bypass on the Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi on Sunday.

    Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu stated in Abuja that the crash involved a Dangote Cement truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.

    He stated that it took operatives of the FRSC, battling through the accompanying inferno, three hours to rescue two surviving victims of the crash.

    Agwu added that the Toyota bus was travelling from Kano and was on its lane when the Dangote truck driver travelling from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus.

    “The impact of the collision resulted in an inferno that burnt the victims to death.

    “The crash, which was caused by route violation and wrongful overtaking, involved 22 persons, all male.

    “Unfortunately, 19 persons out of the 22 victims were killed, while one was injured.

    “The two victims who got rescued by FRSC operatives survived without injuries because they complied with traffic regulations on the compulsory use of seatbelts.

    “Corpses retrieved from the crash were deposited at Okene General Hospital,’’ Agwu stated.

    Agwu assured that the driver of the Dangote truck would be prosecuted in accordance with directives earlier issued by the Corps Marshal, Alhaji Dauda Ali-Biu.

    Ali-Biu had in the past called on the judiciary, the leadership of transport unions and other relevant stakeholders to join hands with the FRSC to restore sanity to Nigerian roads through speedy and effective prosecution.

    Road accident claims 2 lives in Osun – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun Command, says two persons lost their lives in an accident on Gbongan-Ibadan expressway in Osogbo.

    The Acting Sector Commander, Mrs Medinat Akanbi, who made this known in Osogbo on Saturday, said the deceased were a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger.

    She said that a Sports Utility Vehicle with Abuja number plate KUJ 417 DH had a head on collision with a commercial motorcycle with number plate SGB 708 UH, leading to the death of the two persons.

    “The accident occurred around Mobil filling station when a Toyota Jeep ran over a motorcyclist riding against traffic rules.

    “The rider and his passenger lost their lives on-the-spot, while the driver of the Toyota Jeep and his partner were seriously injured and rushed to an undisclosed hospital,” she said.

    She said the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

    Akanbi advised road users to always comply with safety ordinance.

    11 die, 16 injured in Kano auto crash — FRSC

    No fewer than 11 persons lost their lives while 16 others were injured, with one person rescued unhurt in an auto crash at Gaya junction along the Kano – Maiduguri road.

    The Kano State FRSC Sector Commander, Ibrahim Sallau-Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued by the Connand’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, on Saturday in Kano.

    He said that the accident involved two vehicles, a Toyota hummer bus, with registration number KTG 190 XB and a Hijet mini pick-up, with registration number KTG 501 YG.

    “We received a call at about 03:45 p.m. on April 19, 2024. On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident to rescue the victims at 03:55p.m.,” Abdullahi.

    The sector commander said that the accident occurred as a result of speeding and loss of control, which led to a head-on collision as two vehicles bursted into flames immediately.

    “The accident involved a total of 28 passengers in the two vehicles, out of which 11 lost their lives while 16 others sustained serious injuries, one rescued unhurt.

    “The injured were taken to Gaya General Hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the corpses were respectfully laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony”, Abdullahi said.

    The sector commander, who lamented the occurrence of the incident, emphasized the importance of compliance with road safety rules and regulations.

    He urged drivers to refrain from committing traffic offences such as speed violations and overloading of vehicles with passengers, animals or goods.

    Abdullahi also advised commercial drivers to install speed limit devices on their vehicles to avoid crashes resulting from speed limit violations.

    He said that the command was committed to ensuring the safety of road users,vowing,” we will intensify efforts to enforce traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

    FRSC nabs BUA driver who crushes 6 persons to death

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna State Sector Command, said it has arrested a BUA Company driver who crushed six persons to death and 30 others injured on Kano-Zaria road .

    The Sector Commander, Mr Kabir Nadabo, confirmed the incident to NAN on Friday in Kaduna.

    Nadabo said the cause of the accident was as a result of overloading and dangerous driving.

    He disclosed that the road crash  occurred on Thursday, saying, ”a trailer driver conveying bags of rice from Kano to Warri in Delta had a lone accident at Wambai along the Kano-Zaria Highway.”

    He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the trailer was at a dangerous speed and had resulted in a crash, which resulted in the death of the deceased.

    ” Men of FRSC and the Police conducted the rescue and were on ground for an on-the-spot assessment.”

    Nadabo further said that investigation indicated that the trailer was carrying 57 people, out of which six died  while 30 got injured.

    “Apparently, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to high speed and the injured were conveyed to Makarfi General Hospital for further treatment, ” he said.

    Nadabo  stated further  that  FRSC had on February 24, inaugurated its Joint Special Task Force on Overloading of Goods, Humans and Animals, with other agencies like the Police, NSCDC, FRSC and KASTLEA.

    He said, “The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Dauda Biu, had tasked the  Kaduna State Command to work with various security agencies as well as stakeholders.

    ”This is to ensure drivers overloading their vehicles with goods, humans and animals are stopped, enlightened and cautioned on the dangers inherent in the act.

    “The Joint operation recorded numerous successes with the apprehension of  67 trailers, 1,807 passengers dropped and made to continue their journeys with alternative vehicles.”

    He disclosed that the exercise didn’t record any crash during the operations except on March  4,  when a trailer rammed into a Golf saloon car at Abakpa along Kaduna-Abuja Expressway killing five  people.

    Nadabo said that FRSC as the lead agency in traffic management and road administration would continue to engage all the relevant stakeholders on the need to sensitize drivers on the dangers of overloading and night driving.

    “What we witnessed today is avoidable and tragic, may I unequivocally state that the driver has been arrested and will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

    “The corps will continue to explore ways to address the fundamental challenges of rad crashes with a view to reducing them to the barest minimum, “Nadabo said.

    The sector commander commended the Kaduna  State Government and other stakeholders  for their sustained support to the corps.

    Nadabo also lauded the Media for their friendship, reliability and support to FRSC programmes aimed at propagating the word of safety to Nigerians.
