    FRSC set for nationwide clampdown on irate drivers

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has directed its Commanding Officers to step up nationwide enforcement against overloading of vehicles and night trips.

    The corps also said it would engage stakeholders to eduate them on the dangers inherent in the acts.

    The FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu gave the directive in a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal, Jonas Agwu, on Monday in Abuja.

    Ali-Biu said the two crashes on Monday that led to the death of 17 people reinforced the need for the FRSC to go after drivers involved in speeding, overloading and night trips.

    The two crashes occurred at Tashar Yari village, along Zaria-Kano Expressway in Kaduna State and near Fire Service Academy, along Yangoji-Gwagwalada expressway in the FCT.

    The Tashan Yari village crash which occurred at 07:36am, involved a trailer overloaded with grains and 40 passengers seating atop the goods.

    The trailer, with registration number KTG 454 ZZ, was on a night trip from Azare when it crashed due to wrong overtaking, driving against legal speed limit and overloading.

    Out of the 40 passengers, 12 were killed, while 28 who sustained different level of injuries were evacuated to Makarfi General Hospital.

    The accident along Yangoji-Gwagwalada expressway occurred at about 04:35am, when a speeding  J5 bus on a night trip rammed into a stationery trailer and exploded into flames.

    Five victims were burnt beyond recognition.

    Ali-Biu decried the rate of road crashes that occur as a result of night trips, overloading and fragrant violation of legal speed limits.

    He highlighted some of the dangers associated with night trips to include poor visibility, fatigue, speed and delayed post-crash response.

    “In view of the need to address this menace, I have directed commanding officers to step up enforcement, engage all stakeholders and ensure adequate advocacy,” he added.

    In another development, the corps marshal has decorated the newly appointed Deputy Corps Marshal representing the North East, Muhammed Kabo.

    Ali-Biu also decorated the six Assistant Corps Marshals elavated in the just concluded 2023 promotion exercise.

    6 die, 11 injured in Ebonyi auto crash

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Sunday confirmed that six persons died in an automobile crash on Onueke axis at the Afikpo-Abakaliki road in Ebonyi.

    The Sector Commander, FRSC, in the State, Igwe Nnabuife, in Abakaliki disclosed the accident involved 17 persons

    Nnabuife noted that six persons died, while 11 were critically injured.

    According to Nnabuife, the accident involved three vehicles, two articulated vehicles and a commercial bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit.

    “It happened around 11:50 am at Onuwedu, Onueke axis, Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi.

    “This is a multiple crash and it was caused by wrong over-taking.

    “The dead have been taken to the mortuary at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, while those injured are receiving treatment.

    “We advice drivers to always be patient while driving. Always obey the traffic rules and regulations. Avoid dangerous driving and over-speeding to save lives,” Nnabuife stated.

    FRSC reveals major causes of road accidents in Abuja

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has revealed the major causes of road accidents in Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Sector Commander, Mr Muta’a Chorrie revealed the major causes in an interview on Tuesday in Abuja.

    Chorrie revealed that non use of seat belt, use of phones while driving and over speeding were the major causes of road accidents during an operation carried out by the Corps.

    He disclosed that the FRSC arrested no fewer than 4,907 persons for 6,339 traffic offences during the just concluded “Operation Zero Tolerance” in the FCT.

    “Operation Zero Tolerance” was conducted by the FRSC in the FCT during the yuletide season between December 15, 2023 to January 15, 2024.

    Chorrie, however, said that the Corps would be embarking on another special patrol operation in 2024 in the territory.

    He added that the experience during the 2023 end of the year special patrol operations propelled the Corps to commence another.

    This, he said would not only check excesses of users of mobile phones but would also reduce incessant road traffic crashes in the six area councils.

    “The special Operation is tagged “Operation Falcon Speed Mobile Control”. This will help check all the things that causes road accident and curb to the barest minimum,” he said.

    The FRSC boss stressed that the Corps had provided radar guns and other operational logistics to enhance its efficiency and effectiveness in 2024.

    Chorrie said that the Command would also embark on intensive sensitisation in churches, Mosques and Schools which he believed have larger population.

    “This will also help to inculcate driving culture and educate road users on effective traffic management in the FCT.

    “The Corps would be visiting churches on Sundays and Mosques on Fridays as well as various public and private schools, “he said.

    The Sector commander appealed to motorists, particularly commercial drivers to always abide by traffic rules and give maximum cooperation to FRSC.

    This, he said would not only reduce road accidents with fatalities but also save lives and properties in the territory.

    Independent revenue has consistently contributed an excess of N1trn to FG annual revenue in recent years – Muruako

    The Executive Chairman of Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Victor Muruako Esq has disclosed that the Fiscal Responsibility Commission has made significant strides in enhancing the independent revenue of the Federal Government. He added that FG’s Independent Revenue has consistently contributed an excess of N1 trillion to the Federal Government annual revenue in recent years.

    Speaking at a Service Wide Strategic Training on Enhancing Public Revenue and Expenditure Management organised by Fiscal Responsibility Commission and ADSC, the FRC’s boss said:

    “Notably, the Commission has made significant strides in enhancing the Independent Revenue of the Federal Government in recent years.

    ” Through collaborative efforts with the Finance Committees in the two Houses of the National Assembly, we have seen remarkable growth.

    ” In fact, Independent Revenue, which was previously not considered a significant revenue source, has consistently contributed an excess of N1 trillion to the Federal Government annual revenue in recent years.”

    Addressing Senior FG officials at the training, he added, “We achieved this by working with MDAs like yours to improve remittances of Operating Surplus and Internally Generated Revenue, guided by FRC’s Operating Surplus Template and extant regulations.”

    “The people seated here today as participants, he continued, “are the ones that interfaced with our Commission and sister agencies to make this improvement happen. We are grateful.”

    Muruako reminded the participants of their responsibility to ensure that the management of the Federal Government’s finances aligns with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act and other relevant regulations.

    “Moreover,” he added, “it remains your duty to ensure that the Federal Government budget is planned and executed in a timely, efficient, and effective manner, with a focus on achieving the expected outcomes and impacts. Your continued vigilance and dedication to compliance are therefore essential.”

    The Executive Chairman further presented the Fiscal Responsibility Commission as a statutory body established by the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007, with the mandate to promote and enforce the nation’s economic objectives, ensure prudent management of the nation’s resources, and secure greater accountability and transparency in fiscal operations.

    On the roles of the Commission, he said, “The Commission also diligently oversees and enforces regulations, boundaries, and responsibilities placed upon the public sector, particularly those managing the Federal Government’s public finance system. We are committed to fostering a culture of fiscal responsibility and sustainability in the public sector, as well as enhancing the quality and efficiency of public service delivery.

    “In conclusion, I extend my appreciation to the ADSC for their partnership in this training program. I commend the individual trainers and facilitators for their expertise and dedication, and, most importantly, I congratulate the participants for their selection and participation in this program.

    ” I have no doubt that you will find the training useful and relevant. I implore your full participation, active engagement and attention to the details that will be shared during the training.  I also hope that you will share your insights and experiences with your colleagues back in the office.

    10 dead, 12 injured in Jigawa auto crash – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa, on Thursday, said 10 persons died while 12 others sustained injuries in an auto crash on Ringing-Dutse road, in Ringim Local Government Area of the state.

    The command’s Public Relatiins Officer (PRO), Mr Ibrahim Yahaya, confirmed the incident in Dutse.

    Yahaya said the accident, involving a Volkswagen Golf car and a Toyota bus, occurred at Gidan Garke village at about 12:30 p.m..

    He explained that the accident occurred when the two vehicles conveying 22 passengers, had a head-on-collision as a result of wrongful overtaking.

    The PRO said that the FRSC personnel who responded to a distress call on the accident, have since taken the victims to the General Hospital, Ringim.

    According to him, the personnel could not identify the registration numbers of the two vehicles as they were burnt beyond recognition.

    FRSC advises drivers against alcohol consumption in new year

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised drivers against taking alcohol and intoxicating substances in 2024 in order to minimise road traffic crashes.

    In an interview in Ota on Monday, Mr Anthony Uga, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, said that records indicate most accidents in the past forthnight resulted from consumption of intoxicating substances.

    ” The mouths of most of the rescued drivers involved in road crashes within the last festive periods were emiting alcoholic smells” he said.

    The commander said that intake of alcoholic beverages had no positive benefits, but rather were the causes of mishaps on the highways.

    “We are appealing to drivers, who are fond of such behaviours, to refrain as it causes unnecessary loss of lives and property,” he added.

    Uga said that the FRSC would soon embark on sensitisation campaigns at motor parks and garages on the dangers of consumption of alcoholic and narcotic substances.

    He also enjoined management of existing motor parks in the state to sanction drivers who consume alcohol before getting behind the wheels.

    The sector commander further appealed to relevant government agencies to curb the sale of alcoholic beverages and other intoxicating substances in motor parks.

    He reiterated the commitment of the command to making the highways safe for the motoring public through public enlightenment and enforcement of traffic rules.

    Lone auto crash claims 2 lives in Jigawa

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa Command, on Wednesday, said two persons lost their lives in an accident on Birnin Kudu/Kano highway.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Yahaya Ibrahim, who confirmed this in Dutse, said the accident occurred at about 2.50 p.m. due to speeding and burst tyre.

    Ibrahim explained that the accident involved a Volkswagen Golf car with registration number TDU 520A A conveying 11 passengers out of which two lost their lives and nine others sustained varying degrees of injury.

    According to him, the FRSC personnel who responded to the accident in seven minutes after receipt of the information, have since taken the victims to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Birnin Kudu.

    Tragedy: 6 dead, 11 injured in Kaduna–Zaria road auto-crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command said six persons died and 11 sustained injuries in a road crash on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway.

    The Sector Commander, Mr Kabir Nadabo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna that the road traffic crash occurred at Aliko filling station on Kaduna-Zaria expressway on Tuesday at about 06:25hrs.

    Nadabo said the multiple accident was caused by speeding and dangerous driving, which resulted in the temporary halting of movement of motorists.
    He, however, said that the road was now free and clear for movement, explaining that the rescue team of Zebra 35 Rigachikun responded promptly to the scene and conducted the rescue.

    “The initial investigation of the crash revealed that 23 people were involved in the crash, 11 were injured and sadly, all 6 lost their lives,” Nadabo said.

    He said that investigation revealed that the Toyota bus was coming from Ilesha and heading to Batsari, in Katsina State, adding, ”the driver was at high speed, lost control and rammed into a moving vehicle, thus causing the crash.”

    Nadabo said most of the road traffic crashes on the highway were caused by motorists not from Kaduna state, but mostly from other states and were due to fatigue .

    He stated that as the lead agency in transport management and road safety, the FRSC was saddened by this unfortunate but avoidable incident.

    ” The Corps in Kaduna state will continue to perform its statutory duty of saving lives and properties and most fundamentally, creating awareness on the dangers of Road safety vices and unethical road culture.

    “Kaduna state is a critical corridor, therefore the state Command has established instruments of safety that will guide transporters on the importance of safe travels in this yuletide season and beyond..

    ” Remember, the more we educate motorists on the significance of cultivating safety behavior on the roads, the less Road Traffic Crashes will be experienced, ” he said.

    He called on the stakeholders, particularly the transport unions to help us reach out and advocate the language of safety to their drivers.

    Nadabo added that the corps was liaising with media outlets to better inform the public on the dangers of dangerous driving, overloading, driving with worn out tyres and fatigue caused by long journeys etc.

    The sector commander appealed to all the categories or road users to abide by safe driving ethics at all times.

    Truck crushes woman to death on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, said a truck crushed a woman to death at Dalemo area on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Thursday night.

    Anthony Uga, Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, who confirmed the incident on Friday in Ota, said the accident occurred at about 11:00 p.m.

    Uga explained that a truck with registration no.XA 354 WDP and two persons were involved in the accident.

    The sector commander said that the truck lost control due to excessive speeding and hit a female adult standing beside the road, resulting to the death of the victim.

    ”The corpse of the victim had been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, Ogun.”

    The FRSC boss implored drivers against restless driving and always conduct a routine check on their vehicles to ensure that the break system were functional before putting them on the road.

    Uga, however, Commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
