FRSC reveals cause of Abuja-Keffi crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says no life was lost in the viral media reports about the crash that occurred on Abuja-Keffi expressway.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM) Bisi Kazeem, in Abuja.

The crash, which occurred on Dec. 22, at about 10 a.m, some reports stated that several lives were lost and attributed the cause of the mishap to FRSC patrol operatives.

Kazeem, who applauded the media for their watchdog roles, however said it was important to explain the sensitive issue to avoid misrepresentation of facts and purveyance of misinformation.

“To begin with, against the media reports, claiming that several people were killed as a result of the crash, the Corps wishes to categorically state that no single motorist lost his or her life in the crash.

“Six motorists who sustained minor bruises were treated and discharged immediately at Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.

“The fact of the matter is that the operatives of the Corps were carrying out their legitimate duty with a Mobile Court operation on the said date, just before the Military check point, on the Abuja-Keffi expressway when the crash occurred.

“Unlike what was reported in the media, this gridlock was occasioned by motorists who out of fear of being apprehended, and tried in the Court, decided to park far from the scene of the Mobile Court,” he said.

According to him, it was amidst the indiscriminate parking that a truck approaching the point, failed break and hit a luxurious bus which also ran into two other stationary vehicles, parked on the shoulder of the road.

“Immediately the operatives got the news of the crash, rescue teams were speedily deployed for rescue operations.

“It was at the point of the rescue that the villagers and other passersby, who were not in tune with the cause of the crash; rather than give a helping hand to the team on the rescue mission, decided to unleash mayhem on some of the personnel.

“This was done with sticks and other weapons, leading to severe injuries on the personnel.

“It took the intervention of the men of Nigeria Police Force and the Military to disperse the mob and stop them from continuing the attack,” he said.

Kazeem cautioned the public against wanton mob attack on FRSC personnel, while advising the media to, for the sake of objective reportage, always seek clarity, by verifying their news before they go into publications.

He also directed the full mobilisation of the 26 Help Areas, and full utilisation of the 59 Emergency Ambulance Points, the mobilisation of roadside clinics, and 24-hour broadcast of traffic situation on the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM.

The personnel were also to identify alternative routes to assist motorists during gridlocks, and give notification of traffic distressed areas for intervention, he said.

Kazeem added that Night Rescue teams have been stationed on standby at all operational Commands.

“The operation is billed to cover the following critical corridors: Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor,

“Others are Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor, amongst others.”

Kazeem said that the FRSC’s holistic approach was to ensure safer roads in view of the upsurge in traffic volume recorded during such time.

He said that the target was to avert chaos and indiscipline on the highway, so as to avoid crashes and fatalities.

“The directive also mandates the Corps’ operatives to ensure effective collaboration with Military Units, the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“Other sister agencies to work with include Directorate of State Services, NGO Ambulance Service Providers, National Network on Emergency Road Services and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency,” he said.

A heavy-duty truck, carrying bottled water, on Saturday crashed at Hawan-Kibo, on the Jos-Abuja highway in a lone accident, leaving scores of motorists and commuters stranded in an unusual gridlock.

Mr Peter Longsan, the Public Education Officer of the Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the development to NAN in Jos.

“We appeal to motorists to be patient and not panic, our men will soon clear the road,” Longsan said.

Mr Mohammed Suleiman, an eye witness at the scene of the accident, who was on his way to Abuja from Jos, told NAN that commuters had been stranded there for many hours without movements from both sides of the road.

“No vehicle is moving from both sides, those going to Abuja from Jos, and even those coming from the North East cannot go further. Ditto for those coming from Abuja either to Jos or the far north,” Tola said.

He, however, noted that hope for the stranded passengers seemed to be in sight as officials of the FRSC were mobilising to the area to remove the vehicle and ease the gridlock.

According to reports, Hawan Kibo is often a flash point of ghastly accidents, usually involving heavy-duty vehicles, which find ascending the hilly area a herculean task.

As a result, many lives have been lost following the crashes that often involve multiple vehicles.

VIOs can arrest traffic offenders, FRSC clarifies

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) have legal backing to arrest traffic offenders depending on the state within which they operate.

Deputy Corps Marshal at the FRSC, Mr Bisi Kazeem, stated in Abuja that the motoring public should give maximum cooperation to VIOs for the enhancement of safety on the roads

A unit commander of the FRSC in Abuja had earlier declared that VIOs did not have the right to arrest road traffic violators, including those operating overloaded vehicles or motorists caught using phones while driving.

The Corps Marshal, Mr Dauda Biu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of the unit commander to the national headquarters for necessary administrative and disciplinary actions.

“The general public is advised to disregard the unit commander’s statement as it had no approval of the FRSC Corps Marshal and does not in any way reflect the corporate or general position of the FRSC.

“In line with sustaining the Corps’ resolve that road safety is a collective responsibility, we acknowledge the role VIOs play in complementing the responsibilities of the FRSC through the enforcement of traffic laws,’’ Kazeem stated.

He enjoined the motoring public to always comply with all established traffic regulations and to cooperate with security agencies deployed to maintain law and order on the highways, irrespective of their corporate mandate.
