Take bribe, get sacked – FRSC warns personnel

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has vowed to dismiss from service any of its personnel found extorting motorists or involved in any form of corrupt practices.

The Corps Public Education Officer, (CPEO) Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, gave the warning in an interview with NAN on Friday in Abuja.

Kazeem was reacting to a probe of some officers of the FRSC, after a surveillance team of the agency caught them in a suspected act of extortion of commuters.

According to reports, the operatives, who were arrested in Sagamu, Ogun State, South-west Nigeria, have been recalled to face probe at the zonal headquarters of the agency in Lagos.

The tactical surveillance team of the agency made a futile attempt to arrest a civilian suspected of helping the officers to take and keep bribes.

The CPEO, who confirmed the arrest of the operatives and the ongoing probe, said that the tactical surveillance team was recently set up by the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Biu.

He said it was set up to fight bribery and extortion among officers of the agency.

“The corps marshal felt that reports concerning the issue of extortion were getting alarming and didn’t want to stop at internal mechanism.

“This necessitated the set up of the tactical surveillance team to ensure any form of bribery and corruption is curbed to the barest minimum.

“The members of the team arrested in Sagamu were recalled to the Lagos Zonal Headquarters at Ojodu-Isheri for proper investigation.

“If found culpable after investigation, they will be disciplined according to relevant sections of the Federal Road Safety Commission’s maintenance of discipline,” he said.

The FRSC spokesman warned civilians who normally conspire with FRSC teams in such nefarious and unpatriotic acts to desist henceforth or be ready to face the wrath of the law when apprehended.

Kazeem also called on the motoring public to resist the temptation of offering any kind of bribe whatsoever to FRSC patrol teams in any part of the country.

He said that culprits would be arrested and prosecuted in the court of law, so as to set a precedent that would deter other perpetrators.

  • FRSC denies introducing Sharia Law to enforce traffic rules

FRSC denies introducing Sharia Law to enforce traffic rules

The Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) has dissociated itself from the rumours that it is seeking the introduction of Sharia Law to complement existing extant regulations on the enforcement of traffic rules and prosecution of offenders.

Recently, there were media reports that the sector commander, FRSC, in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, spoke on the need to create a Shari’a law to prosecute traffic offenders to curtail road crashes in the country.

But reacting to Abdullahi’s comment in a press statement, issued by FRSC headquarters on Saturday, said the entire statement does not in anyway, reflect the position of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

According to the statement signed by Bisi Kazeem, assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, noted that the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu has recalled with immediate effect, the Sector Commander to the National Headquarters Abuja, for necessary administrative action because the Sector Commander through the quoted statements has breached the FRSC regulations and the Standard Operating Procedures.

The statement reads: “Without any reservation, it is key to inform the general public that the Federal Road Safety Corps is a Government Agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria and sensitive to the country’s multi-religious as well as heterogeneous ethnic composition.

“The Corps was founded through Decree No. 45, as amended by Decree 35 of 1992 referred to in the statute books as the FRSC Act cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN). The Act was passed by the National Assembly as Federal Road Safety Corps (establishment) Act 2007.

“By this very fact, it is important to clearly posit that the Corps is neither a religious nor sectional organisation, but a Federal Government Agency established with a mandate that is guided by the provisions of an establishment Act; and not a Sharia, Mosaic, customary, canon or any other law whatsoever that contradicts the provisions of it’s establishment Act, or the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Kazeem stressed that the lead agency role is shielded in it strict compliance with established regulations duly passed by the National Assembly. As such, the public is humbly called to disregard the entire content of the opinion as published because it is outrightly baseless.
