FRSC Commander in trouble over Sharia law controversy

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recalled the Bauchi State Sector Commander, Mr Yusuf Abdullahi, to its National Headquarters, Abuja for necessary administrative action.

This is following an opinion credited to Mr Abdullahi, which quoted him to have said the FRSC was seeking the introduction of Sharia Law to punish traffic offenders.

Abdullahi was quoted to have said the introduction of Sharia Law by the Corps would curtail bad behaviour by motorists as most crashes were due to their negative attitudes.

However, the FRSC has dissociated itself from the opinion published on different news platforms.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem on Saturday in Abuja, however, described the opinion as baseless and unfounded, adding that it did not reflect the position of the FRSC.

“The public is humbly called upon to disregard the entire content of the opinion as published.

“This is because it is baseless, unfounded and does not apply in FRSC’s operations and service to the Nigerian people,’’ he stated.

He stated also that by the statement, the Bauchi Sector Commander had breached FRSC’s regulations and its Standard Operating Procedures

“Without any reservation, it is important to inform the general public that the FRSC is a government agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration.

“It is also sensitive to the country’s multi-religious as well as heterogeneous ethnic composition.

“It is important to state that the Corps is neither a religious nor sectional organisation, but a Federal Government agency established with a mandate guided by the provisions of an establishment Act.

“The FRSC is not guided by Sharia, Mosaic or customary law that contradicts the provisions of its establishment Act, or the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ Kazeem stressed.

FRSC issues traffic alert for travellers on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Sunday issued traffic advisory for travellers using the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to explore alternative way due to a road traffic crash along the route.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Kazeem said that crash involving a tanker occurred in the early hours of Sunday under the Ibafo pedestrian bridge on the outward Lagos section of the expressway.

He said that FRSC officers and some security agencies had been on top of the situation since the occurrence of the crash.

He added that the contents of the fallen vehicle had been successfully trans-loaded into another one while men of the Ogun State Fire Service had proceeded to refill their water tank.

“Unfortunately, some inpatient drivers who choose to drive against the flow of traffic from all available exit points have done so, thereby causing traffic jams.

“This is however, not only for the outward Lagos section where the RTC occurred alone but also, the inward Lagos section as well.

“All road users going into and out of Lagos are therefore advised to explore alternative routes.

“Such routes include Ikorodu through Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, and Epe for Lagos bound vehicles, ” he said.

He advised some to ply Abeokuta through Sagamu Interchange as well for their own good.

FRSC says three dead, two injured in Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

About  three persons lost their lives , while two others sustained injuries in a road accident that happened at the Ogun state end of the  Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Saturday.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred around the Saapade-Ogere axis of the road at about 6:25 pm.

Florence Okpe, the  FRSC spokesperson in Ogun state said that a total of five persons were involved in the crash – four male adults and one female adult.

While saying two persons were injured, Okpe expressed sadness that three other persons died in the crash.

She said that , a speeding Toyota car marked KSF122, had rammed into a Sino truck registered as FZE840G.

Okpe said the Toyota car driver lost control while speeding, saying it “rammed into the moving truck from the rear.”

It was gathered that the injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara, all in Ogun.

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, Ahmed Umar has sympathised with the families of the victims.

  • FRSC speaks on drivers with faded number vehicle plates

FRSC speaks on drivers with faded number vehicle plates

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will continue to apprehend motorists with faded vehicle number plates because they are a security risk to the public.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem said this in an interview with NAN on Thursday in Abuja.

Kazeem said criminals take advantage of faded number plates to perpetrate heinous crimes in the country, as such impounding such vehicles would enhance security of lives and property.

“What we are saying is that driving a vehicle with faded number plates on our roads is like living with neighbours who do not have identity; that is a huge security risk for other road users.

“This is because, miscreants, kidnappers, terrorists as well as other enemies of the state can leverage on that gap to commit heinous crimes because their identity is masked,” he added.

Kazeem said that the corps would continue to educate vehicle owners on the imperative of having very clear number plates.

“I think the emphasis here should be channeled to educating people on the need to know the basis so that owners of faded number plates can replace them rather than devoting energy on whether or not arrest is imminent,” he said.

Kazeem said that the mandate of the FRSC included making highways safe, designing and producing vehicle number plates and keeping custody of every information about vehicles in Nigeria.

The Corps Public Education Officer said vehicle owners rather than the FRSC, should bear the cost of getting their faded number plates reissued.

According to him, number plates fade because of using  concentrated detergents in washing vehicles.

“In this case and other cases of theft, loss and mutilation from crashes, replacement is at the cost of the vehicle owners.

“Such vehicle owners must first apply and will be contacted on the required fee for the replacement through the motor vehicle administration.

“Where materials are available for the production of number plates, it doesn’t take up to two days for the issuance of number plate for a new vehicle.

“And also less than one week for re-issuance in case of theft, loss, mutilation and where they become faded,” he said.

The spokesman emphasised that it was not the desire of the FRSC to arrest motorists and impound their vehicles, but to educate them to do the right thing.

He added that ensuring safety on roads was a collective responsibility.

“When it comes to enforcement, there is always collaboration and synergy amongst security agencies.

“As for enlightenment, we have commenced that even before the enforcement began.

“This is so because the Corps has a tradition of embarking on robust enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns on policies before proper enforcement,’’ he said.

Kazeem denied that the number plates issued by the FRSC were substandard.

“If the vehicle and all its parts including the paint on it are subject to fading away, wear and tear, then the number plate should not be an exception.

“We are known for quality, both in our services and products, so saying the quality of materials we use are substandard, does not reflect the truth.

“We are aware of this but not deterred from doing what is right and we shall continue to stand on the side of the truth and deliver on our mandate.”
