FRSC to wives: Stop tying gele, rubbing powder while your husbands are driving

Women travelling with their husbands should be co-drivers instead of rubbing powder, looking at mirrors and adjusting headgears, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised.

The Costain Unit Commander of FRSC in Lagos State, Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola, gave the advice in an interview NAN.

According to Okelola, women sitting in the front, making observations, cautioning, and advising their husbands while driving, will minimise road accidents.

“It has been observed that most times, wives do not pay attention to the driving attitude of their husbands. They engage in making up and tying headgears in the car.

“Also, in this age of mobile phones, they tend to concentrate on their phones and not minding their surroundings,” he said.

He urged wives to be observant and caution their husbands when speeding and exhibiting other forms of reckless driving. He said that driving above 100km per hour was dangerous.

Okelola appealed to motorists to abide by road traffic rules and regulations to ensure road safety. He also appealed to them to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on a trip.

The official said that overloading, excessive speeding and driving without a licence remained traffic offences,  among others.

He emphasised that 18 years was the minimum age requirement for driving and noted that 26 years was the minimum age requirement for driving for commercial purposes. He added that the maximum age was 65 years.

FRSC alerts motorists to Katsina–Batsari bridge collapse

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has alerted motorists to the collapse of a bridge along the Katsina–Batsari route.

The collapse occurred a few metres after Salbak Filling Station, near Shagari Lowcost, following a heavy downpour on Saturday night.

This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Olusegun Ogungbemide.

Ogungbemide said the Sector Commander in Katsina, Corps Commander Maxwell Lede, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the incident on Sunday and ordered the immediate closure of the affected section to traffic.

“The FRSC has cordoned off the area from both ends to safeguard road users,” the statement said.

He added that alternative routes had been provided to ease traffic movement.

“Motorists travelling from Katsina to Batsari are advised to use Ring Road via Al-Qalam University, while those coming from Batsari to Katsina should use the Army Barracks–Jibia Road to reconnect.

“Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the collapsed bridge site to prevent road crashes, especially during late evening hours or in rainy conditions when visibility is poor,” Ogungbemide warned.

He also urged media houses to amplify the advisory for public awareness, emphasising that road safety was a shared responsibility.

FRSC sends strong warning to motorcyclist plying highways

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its warning to arrest any motorcyclists riding on highways without crash helmets in the State.

Dr Samuel Ibitoye, Ondo State FRSC Sector Command, gave the warning while speaking on Sunday in Akure.

Ibitoye told NAN that the corps had redoubled its efforts to arrest, impound and prosecute any motorcyclist riding on highways without a helmet.

He explained that most of the crashes involving motorcycles without crash helmets usually resulted in fatalities where skulls, limbs and thighs were broken.

“It is good for motorcycle riders to avoid highways completely but when they find themselves there, they should use the crash helmets and not engage in competition with the vehicles, especially heavy vehicles.

“Don’t claim any rights on the way as an exposed road user, please let the vehicle go and have your own life intact.

“There is a sanction for any motorcyclist riding on highways without the use of a helmet.

“The motorcycle will be impounded and fine paid, but that is not the major thing we are preaching. We are preaching the use of the helmet and safety first,” he said.

The commander, therefore, called on traditionalists, religious leaders and title-holders riding motorcycles without crash helmets to desist from such attitudes for their own safety.

“Do not say because you are a titleholder or a religious person, that it is only your turban or cap you must wear.

“No, If you want to entertain your titles don’t go and ride. Please think of your own safety rather than the title you are talking about.

“Crashes do not know religion, it doesn’t know tradition, it doesn’t know titles and when it happens it takes you as human and your body goes for it as a motorcycle rider.

“So, if you must ride, wear your crash helmet and if you don’t want to wear a helmet, please go and board a vehicle or car. Don’t get yourself killed unexpectedly,” Ibitoye said.

  • BREAKING! Appeal Court finally bars FRSC from seizing licences, vehicles

BREAKING! Appeal Court finally bars FRSC from seizing licences, vehicles

The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, Imo State, has ruled that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has no legal authority to seize drivers’ licences, vehicles, or related documents without lawful justification.

The ruling was delivered in Appeal No: CA/OW/199/2022, filed by the FRSC, the Corps Marshal, and an officer identified by Uniform No. COSS 35 (as 1st to 3rd Appellants) against Dr. Emmanuel Ugochukwu Shebbs (Respondent).

The appellate court upheld the earlier judgment of the Abia State High Court, which had declared the actions of the FRSC as a violation of Shebbs’ fundamental human rights.

In a unanimous decision, Justices Amina Audi Wambai, M. Lawal Abubakar, and Ntong F. Ntong affirmed the liability of the FRSC, stating that its actions were unlawful. However, the appellate court reduced the damages initially awarded from N30 million to N10 million, covering both general and exemplary damages.

The case originated from a 2020 incident during the COVID-19 lockdown when FRSC officers stopped Dr. Shebbs along Bende Road in Umuahia. He alleged that after an initial inspection of his vehicle found no fault, the officers demanded a bribe. Upon his refusal, they conducted a second inspection, accused him of having a worn-out tyre, and seized his driver’s licence while issuing a N3,000 fine.

Instead of paying the fine, Shebbs approached the Abia High Court, arguing that the seizure of his licence without due process violated his fundamental rights—a claim both the High Court and the Court of Appeal have now upheld.
