FG cautions motorists against speeding on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Government has cautioned motorists and other road users plying Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to drive cautiously and avoid speeding, especially during the Yuletide.

Mrs Forosola Oloyede, the Ogun Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, gave the advice on Saturday in Ibadan.

She said that removal of the barriers was done in accordance with the directive from the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola.

According to her, Fashola had ordered that all barriers on the Federal Roads, where construction works are ongoing should be removed for free flow of traffic for the Yuletide season.

She said that removal of the barriers on the Section II of the highway, would enhance smooth traffic on the entire road stretch.

Oloyede, however, cautioned motorists not to be tempted to drive above speed limit, as a result of the road smoothness.

The controller said five pedestrian bridges would be constructed on the Section II of the road, adding that work on the pedestrian bridges would soon commence.

On the completion date, she said: “Initially, the project was scheduled to be completed by this December 2022, but we couldn’t keep to that date due to some hiccups beyond our control.

“But, I can assure you that this project will be completed by March 31, 2023.

In his remarks, Mr Naor Narkis, the Project Manager, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), handling the project, said that work had reached 85 per cent completion stage.

Narkis assured Nigerians, especially motorists plying the road, that his company would deliver the project by March, 2023.

Mr Adelaja Ogungbemi, on behalf of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), enjoined motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations during the Yuletide.

“Motorists and other road users should make efforts to drive safely on the road, such efforts should include consciousness.

“They should know that the road is not a place where you will not be serious, because driving during this Yuletide period requires you should know that there are dangers inherent on the road,” Ogungbemi said.

He urged motorists to always be patient while on the road, saying, “they should avoid speeding, overloading and use good tyres”.

Commenting, some motorists who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), commended the Federal Government and the construction company handling the project, for removing what they described as “obstruction” on the highway.

They also appreciated government for listening to the road users’ complaints about gridlock on Ibadan Toll Gate – Sawmill – Onipepeye Bridge axis of the highway.

Also, Mr Rotimi Adeniyi, a taxi driver plying Tollgate – Iwo Road route, said that removal of the barriers would improve his business, as he would be able to drive on smooth road without traffic, thereby make more money.

Also, John Olayemi, a commercial driver, plying Lagos-Ibadan route, said that removal of barriers on the Section I and II of the road would make him and other commercial drivers to spend less hours on the road.

Take caution, zebra crossings in Nigeria not properly positioned – FRSC warns

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised Nigerians to take caution with the use of zebra crossings, stressing that some zebra crossings across the country were not properly positioned and so may not adequately serve the purpose for which they were created.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide gave the advice while urging motorists to give support to officers in rescuing victims.

He urged them to do so, as against the practice of taking pictures whenever an accident occurred.

Ogungbemide made the appeal during the 2022 World Day Remembrance For Road Victims with the theme “Justice” and Slogan “Remember, Support, Act”, in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said that the event was put together by the United Nations to remember accident victims that lost their lives or got injured during the course of moving from one destination to the other.

He stated that from experience, the corps had taken it as their responsibility to honour the directive by the United Nations in remembrance of road victims.

“Since I took over the leadership of Lagos in 2020, this is the third edition, and with my more than 25 years in service as a road safety officer, the eyes have seen.

“We have carried so many dead bodies, we have helped so many people, some of us would have been killed or died from the trauma.

“It is injustice where a person crashes into a fellow being and runs away from the scene of the mishap.

“In some situation, instead of helping victims, people would prefer to take pictures and send to social media.

“The business of saving lives is all our responsibility, we need to improve in rescuing people and not making the incidence to get worse,” Ogungbemide said.

He said that it was injustice for pedestrians not to use the bridge, as  they risked their lives in crossing the highways.

He said that some zebra crossings were not properly positioned and so may not adequately serve the purpose for which they was created.

The sector commander said that the Lagos State Government was looking into the situation.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, said that the state had enough laws to prosecute traffic offenders.

He urged the Nigeria Police Force to improve on training of its personnel to help road victims claim their rights as a result of road accidents.

Giwa noted that the FRSC had been supportive in rescuing and investigating road victims.

He said that it also sensitised road users especially the drivers on safety measures.

The adviser said that the Lagos State Laws covered prosecution and compensation for road accident victims.

He said that the administration of Gov. Sanwo-Olu would continue to create enabling environment for Lagos residents.

Giwa said that Sanwo-Olu had just approved 55 brand new vehicles for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

He reminded Lagos residents to call 112 or 767 in case of emergencies.

How’s saud that the governor had also established six additional fire stations with 62 fire engines and other equipment to enhance rescue operations and reduce crashes to the barest minimum.

The Chairman, Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, Mr Abdulwahab Matepo, urged government to review road accident laws to enable reckless drivers to face the full wrath of law.

He said that there was no insurance for road victims and only their immediate family carry the burden after accidents.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that the Lagos State Government had done justice in ensuring that responders were adequate.

He said that the quick response of LASEMA operations to point of accident had reduced morbidity and fatality rates.

The Chairman, Health Emergency Initiative, Dr Emmanuel Imafidon, said they had saved over 100 lives since 2021.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, who was represented by Controller Jubril Oshodi, urged Nigerian not to only remember the road victims but also to be
    responsible for safety on highways.

Oreagba said that there was need for everyone to remember to preach the gospel of safety by arriving alive at all times.

The President, Residents of Lagos Taxi Association, Mr Omolekan Taiwo, said they had not recorded any crash of their members as a result of constant sensitisation on use of the road.

FRSC: 412 killed in Lagos road crashes in 10 months

Meanwhile, the Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Deputy Corps Marshal Dauda Biu has disclosed that some 412 people were killed in reported cases of road traffic crashes in Lagos from January to October.

Biu, represented by the Lagos Corps Commander, FRSC, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, gave the figure in Lagos on Tuesday.

He gave it at a programme on the 2022 World Day Remembrance For Road Victims,  themed:”Justice”, with the Slogan “Remember, Support, Act”.

Biu said that the 412 people had been killed and 522 seriously injured in 520 reported cases of road traffic crashes recorded in Lagos State in  the 10 months.

He said that investigations in Lagos revealed inappropriate speeding, equipment failures, loss of control, fatigue, and aggressive driving as the leading proximate causal elements in majority of the crashes.

”It is apposite to say that Lagos-Ibadan and Lekki-Epe-Ijebu-Ode Expressway recorded the highest fatalities during the period with unfortunate revelations that these crashes occurred along the good stretches of the road and at night,”Biu said.

He said that attitudinal change was important in the search for improved, safer roads.

The Acting Corps Marshal said that there was need to cooperate on institutional levels towards the epidemic called Road Traffic Crash.

He said that self accountability and responsibility while on the road should take the better place in every road user.

Biu said that on Aug.17, 1896, the world recorded the first motor collision fatality in Crystal Palace, London.

He said that according to the United Nations (2020), approximately 135 million people’s lives were cut short as a result of road traffic crashes every year.

He said that between 20-50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring permanent disabilities.

Biu commended the efforts of all the Non-Governmental Organisations
(NGO’s), community leaders and government organisations who had been working tirelessly with corps to see the mission accomplished.

The Acting Corps Marshal pledged the FRSC’s commitment towards the goal of creating safer motoring environment in the country.

He sought continuous support of Nigerians, describing achievement of road safety as a shared responsibility.

A fight between a soldier and a truck driver at a military checkpoint in Ochadamu village, along the ever-busy Ajaokuta-Itobe-Anyigba road in Kogi State, has left many dead and others injured.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday confirmed the incident, disclosing that 11 persons died and seven others were seriously injured in the accident that involved a petroleum-laden tanker and others.

Corp Commander Stephen Dawulung, Kogi FRSC Sector Commander confirmed the incident in a telephone in Lokoja.

An eye witness narrated that the first accident occurred around 3 p.m. when a truck rammed into a stationary vehicle at the military checkpoint due to brake failure, killing one person at the spot at Ochadamu village.

“While the military personnel were trying to sort out that incident, a truck driver was busy videotaping the incident, a situation which angered the personnel, who seized the phone.

“Other truck drivers around protested and demanded that the phone be released to their colleague without further delay,” he narrated.

The witness said that one of them (drivers) then drove his tanker laden with petroleum and cross the road, thereby blocking the highway and sworn not to move it away until the phone was given back to the owner.

But shortly after the petroleum tanker blocked the road, another articulated vehicle, filled with coal, lost control due to brake failure too and rammed into the tanker, which exploded in flames that left several persons burnt beyond recognition.

Dawulung confirmed 12 vehicles were burnt, including trucks and six motorcycles that were also burnt down by the inferno that occurred at Ochadamu village along Ajaokuta-Itobe-Anyigba road, Kogi.

He said that the corps’ personnel, who rushed to the scene were able to rescue some trapped commuters and the injured rushed to hospitals for medical attention.

“Already, six of the injured persons have been taken to Holy Memorial Hospital, Ochadamu, while one person was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ajaokuta for medical attention.

“It’s sad that 11 persons died in these unfortunate road accidents that occurred at a spot due to human carelessness,” he said.

The sector commander said that the corps had been warning motorists to always check the roadworthiness of their vehicles before embarking on a journey but it seems they are not obeying.

He described the incident as “shocking” calling on motorists to always keep to the safety rules and regulations to avoid such carnage and wanton destruction.

  • FRSC debunks report of manhandling of pregnant woman by its officer

FRSC debunks report of manhandling of pregnant woman by its officer

Ondo state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ezekiel SonAllah, has dismissed claim that an officer, Monday Olamigoke, manhandled a pregnant woman during an argument at the Ilesa-Akure-Owo highway in the Akure area of Ondo State on Saturday.

According to the sector commander, the woman was neither kicked nor manhandled.

He explained that the vehicle the pregnant woman was in was forced to stop when the driver refused to obey directives to stop and attempted to run over two marshals.

SonAllah claimed that the vehicle was overloaded and the driver did not use his seat belt.

“Immediately the vehicle stopped, the passengers came out and started wailing. On getting there, a particular woman alleged that she was hit, but nothing was wrong with the woman; no nose bleeding or any bleeding,” he added.

The FRSC boss said when the woman insisted that she was in pain, the marshals took her to a nearby hospital.

“It is not as people are painting it; rather, it was Marshal Olamigoke who was injured in the ear.

“We had to call the Scorpion Squad of the Nigeria Police to help calm the situation while the driver was arrested,” he added.

FRSC debunks report of manhandling of pregnant woman by its officer

Recall that the FRSC Officer was alleged to have kicked and injured the pregnant woman on Saturday and she was ushed to a hospital for treatment when she started bleeding.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learned that several tests were conducted on the woman to ascertain if the pregnancy was still intact.

A video clip of the incident obtained by our correspondent showed the victim on the floor while people made attempts to revive her.

In the video, the accused FRSC officer was attacked by some commuters, who crowded the scene.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the pregnant woman was among passengers going to Owo from Osun State.

He noted that the FRSC officer forced her out of the bus on the claim that she was among the people who lashed out at him for stopping the vehicle.

He said, “The FRSC officers were not polite while doing their job and they were unable to manage the situation.

“Passengers got angry and lashed out at the FRSC officers because they were stopped in between trailers. The passengers were complaining about the risk and why they were forced to park when they knew that a trailer was coming.

“The officer dragged a woman out of the bus, and during the fracas, the officer mistakenly hit the woman; he kicked the woman and that was how the woman fell and slumped.

“An Okada rider who saw the whole situation got angry and slapped the officer. The woman did not do anything to deserve such treatment. I was there and I saw everything that transpired.”

The husband of the woman also confirmed that his wife was in a hospital.

He, however, said the general overseer of his church was trying to settle the issue amicably.

“I will speak with you later on the matter,” he added.

She said the police had commenced an investigation and would soon reveal the details to the public.
