  • FRSC urges drivers to rest after 4hrs of driving

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nasarawa Sector Command, has urged drivers to rest after four hours of driving.

Mrs Faustina Alegbe, the state sector commander, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia on Wednesday that the move would prevent fatigue and accidents on the roads.

Alegbe tasked drivers to take a minimum of 15 minutes after every four hours of driving to relax and energise themselves.

“I want to use this medium to advise drivers to endeavour to take a break after every four hours of driving. At least, drivers should take a minimum of 15 minutes rest before continuing driving.

“The time will afford them the opportunity to rest and assess their driving. The drivers can also use the 15-minute rest period to check the vehicle.

“The rest period and checking of the vehicle will ensure that they arrive at their destination safely. Taking this break is very important because it prevents fatigue which is a factor that causes accidents on our roads.

“We are harping on this break because we want our drivers to always be alert and fresh while driving,” she said.

The Nasarawa state FRSC sector commander also advised drivers to minimise conversation with passengers while driving.

“Anything form of distraction can lead to accident, a good driver even while chatting should not be distracted on the highway.

“So, I want to urge passengers not to distract drivers with arguments, but keep them alert with light talk.

“Use of phone while driving is distractive, even eating while driving is dangerous. So, I am appealing to both drivers and passengers to be safety conscious while in a vehicle transporting them to their destinations,” she said.

Alegbe, however, said the state command had commenced the ‘ember’ months’ campaign.

She appealed to all road users to inculcate the habit of constantly maintaining their vehicles before embarking on a journey.

“I want to draw the attention of all road users to the fact that the ember months’ period is a period when the weather is very hazy and foggy.

“So, road users have to imbibe safety precaution with regards to road usage.

“They should ensure that the head lamps are very bright and in good condition, they also should check the brake of their vehicles before they embark on journey’’ she said.

  • New number plates: FRSC speaks on alleged extortion of motorists

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said the stories alleging that its officials ambushed and collected money from motorists over the new number plates is incorrect, untrue and misleading.

The Corps had to make this clarification after its attention was brought to the misleading story in circulation, according to Mr. Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC.

Bisi said after the introduction of the new number plate, the FRSC duly informed the public of the new regime and further gave time for the replacement of the old number plates.

He said the Corps Marshal Dr Boboye Oyeyemi also ensured that the Corps undertook a public enlightenment on the security benefits of changing from the old to the new number plate at the point of renewing vehicle documents which were valid for one year.

He said the new database also makes it easier to track and apprehend criminals, especially those involved in car theft.

He recalled that the Federal High Court presided over by Justice J. T Tsoho held, inter alia, that the FRSC had no statutory powers to set deadlines for change-over to the new number plates since there was no enabling law to that effect.

But the FRSC appealed the Judgment on October 31, 2014. The Appeal Court sitting in Lagos held that the FRSC had the statutory powers in line with the 1999 constitution under the FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007 and the NRTR 2012 to regulate the use of number plates and to set deadlines for change-over to the new ones as provided for in the NRTR 2012.

He said though the decision of the court of Appeal has been challenged, there is no subsisting order of stay of execution of the Judgment of the Court of Appeal.

Bisi said, “by the decision of the court, there is no legal impediment against the enforcement of the provisions of the NRTR 2012 regarding the change from the old to new number plates.

As such, the commencement of enforcement on the aforementioned is in tandem with the provisions of the law as stipulated in the NRTR 2012 and the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
