  • Petrol tanker explosions claim 555 lives across Nigeria

Petrol tanker explosions claim 555 lives across Nigeria

No fewer than 555 persons lost their lives in different petrol tanker fire explosions across Nigeria between January 2020 and January 2025, data released by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has revealed.

Mrs Joyce Alexander, Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra  Command, made the data known, in Awka on Thursday, during a town hall meeting on Tanker and Trailer Safety Challenges in Nigeria.

Alexander said the crashes, numbering about 80, also resulted in hundreds of persons being injured, as well as buildings, vehicles, and other valuables worth millions being destroyed.

She said that in 2020, there were 18 tanker explosions, resulting in 161 fatalities; In 2021, 19 tanker explosions caused 55 deaths; while in 2022, 14 tanker explosions claimed 76 lives.

According to her, in 2023, 13 tanker explosions led to 118 deaths; and in 2024, 13 tanker explosions resulted in 85 fatalities.

“So far, in January 2025, there have been seven recorded tanker explosions. More than 2,000 trucks transport hydrocarbons daily on Nigeria roads and the neglect of safety can have dire consequences, including negative environmental impacts, loss of truck, lives and property.

“The most horrifying aspect of this menace is the scooping of fuel by the citizenry when tanker crashes or spillages occurs. This exacerbates the casualties in the case of fire outbreak.

“In Anambra, we have recorded four trailer-related crashes in three months, which claimed 24 lives and many injured. These are avoidable crashes and casualties.

“This town hall is to help us map out strategies on ways to stop the incessant crashes and explosions, to save lives and property,” she said.

The sector commander said that the corps had put measures in place to ensure compliance to installation of speed limiting devices and other safety requirements in haulage vehicles.

She called for the training and re-training of tanker drivers, urging them on road safety rules.

Alexander also urged tanker operators to prioritise the maintenance of their vehicles to check brake failures, worn out tyres, manhole defects and  inadequate latching of the container.

“We recommend valid vehicle registration and display, valid drivers license class, and stiffer sanctions on operators whose tankers are involved in crashes, through legislation.

“Also, the establishment of rest areas in the state will prevent fatigue and we appeal to the police to free traffic checkpoints at approach of articulated vehicles,” she said.

Reacting to the situation, SCP Uche Noah, the Divisional Police Officer of B-Division, Awka, said that checkpoints could not be removed due to security concerns.

Noah also urged drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other illicit substances.

Some tanker drivers and transport unions highlighted poverty, impatience; excessive police checkpoints; economic hardship and the actions of the Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency; as key challenges affecting tanker drivers.

  • Fuel tanker explosion rocks Niger

    Fuel tanker explosion rocks Niger

A significant explosion rocked a fuel station in Niger State late Sunday night, as a heavy-duty tanker truck carrying fuel was offloading its content at a fuel station.

The sudden and intense blast sent shockwaves through the immediate area, leading to widespread panic and immediate calls to emergency services.

The fuel station was said to belong to a major marketer located a few metres from the ‘B’ Division of the Nigeria Police, Kontagora, in Kontagora Local Government Area.

Accounts from the scene indicate the explosion happened as Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) was being transferred from the tanker, resulting in a large fire.

The ongoing presence of fuel in the station’s storage tanks during the offloading amplified the risk of a devastating secondary explosion.

According to the Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kuma Tsukwam, FRSC personnel were able to effectively manage the fuel tanker explosion, and as a result, no human casualties were recorded.

“Yes, our people were able to nip it in the bud. It happened in the petrol station. They cordoned off the area, so there was no casualty.

“There was no casualty, but it burst into flames. I think this was their lack of safety measures and safety valves, but we were able to cordoned off the area.

“It was inside the petrol station, and they drove all passersby and vehicles from entering the station. Yes, it happened.

“Our major concern was that there was no casualty. They must maintain their safety precautions; it is inevitable,” he said.

  • ‘FRSC policy is clear: no licenses for underage drivers,’ Sector Commander confirms

‘FRSC policy is clear: no licenses for underage drivers,’ Sector Commander confirms

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said it does not issue licenses to underage drivers below 18-years-old.

Mr Samuel Ibitoye, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ondo State, made this known on Monday in Akure, describing underage drivers as impostors driving without permit.

Ibitoye said that underage drivers were not psychologically and emotionally stable to be behind the wheel, stressing that vehicles driven by anyone below 18 years old would be impounded.

According to the sector commander, driving by anyone who is underage could result in autocrash leading to death or serious injuries to other road users.

He said that the command had carried out a lot of advocacy to educate and sensitised parents and vehicles owners, especially articulated vehicle owners, of the risk of having underage persons behind the wheels.

“Before you can drive, you are supposed to be above 18 years old and to get a driver’s license, you must be sound medically and have knowledge of highway traffic signs.

“There is no where you can get such a thing (driver’s license) from underage persons.

“So, if you see an underage person behind the wheel, you will know that such is not licensed to drive,” Ibitoye said.

He, therefore, called on truck owners to put the interest of road users first by engaging matured and licensed drivers and shun cheap labour, which could cause havoc on Nigerian roads.

“My advice to vehicle owners is that they should not engage in illegality and shun child labour by going for matured persons who have acquire presiqusite training and are licensed to drive,” the sector commander said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State, Comrade Ademola Odudu, said that none of his member in the state was under 18 years.

Odudu said that though that might be the case in some states, but the reverse was in Ondo state, stressing “underage drivers are rarely seen in the state.

“So, it is only the concerned authorities that can actually know if one is under aged or not and they should take appropriate actions according to the laws by dealing with under-aged driving so that road users can be safe,” he said.

Residents have come out to agree that driving by underage individuals is broadly perceived as a highly irresponsible practice and that such action would be putting the lives of everyone on the road at risk.
