  • Bad weather: FRSC urges motorists to be more cautious

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to drive more cautiously due to the change in weather conditions in most parts of the country.Mr Bisi Kazeem, the corps Public Education Officer, issued the advice in a statement on Sunday.

The NewsGuru reports that the southern parts of the country are currently experiencing shades of cloudy and foggy conditions.
In the northern and central states, the weather is partly sunny and hazy during the morning hours with dust haze conditions in the evenings.

Kazeem warned that visibility had reduced as a result, hence the need for motorists to be more careful.“It is imperative for motorists to drive carefully, and to be mindful of their blind-spots while overtaking. He also advised them to maintain decent speed during the period.

“They should put on headlights and tail lights for proper visibility due to the foggy weather so as to see and be seen. “Most parts of the country are affected with more critical situations around the northern axis,” he said.

Kazeem noted that following the prescribed speed limit, the current period was no longer necessary as motorists would not be able to see far ahead nor notice obstructions .

He quoted the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, as saying that this is the time for vehicles to equally meet the minimum safety standards.

Oyeyemi urged motorists to ensure that the wipers, head and rear lights, braking systems and engines of their vehicles were in sound conditions, according to Kazeem.

TNG reports that there have been delays and cancellations of flights by airlines due to bad weather, leaving many passengers stranded.

  • Yuletide: FRSC cautions motorists to exercise patience when overtaking to avoid accidents

Mr Clement Oladele, the Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has advised motorists to exercise utmost caution when overtaking articulated vehicles to reduce road accidents, especially during the yuletide.

Oladele gave the advice at the launching of the 2017 FRSC Ember Months’ campaign on Thursday in Sagamu, Ogun.

The theme for the campaign is: “Right to Life on the Highway, Not Negotiable’’.

He stressed the need to enlighten road users on their safety during the period, which he described as the busiest during the year as more people traveled to observe the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“These vehicles are special vehicles. Sometimes we assume they can see us, but rather, most times, they don’t.

“If you drive 10 metres behind an articulated vehicle, I can bet you that the vehicle does not have you in its visual range with the way the mirrors are arranged.

“Even when driving ahead, you must give a distance of about six metres for the driver of the truck to properly see you.

“Caution must, therefore, be taken while overtaking such vehicles as you must ensure you have enough stretch for a successful manoeuvre, else the result is a crash.

“The closer to the head of the truck that you are, the lesser the chance you are seen by the driver.

“Common sense should prevail and motorists must take note of these blind spots so as not to be overrun by the truck,” he said.

The sector commander also implored truck drivers to always inspect their vehicles before embarking on any journey to avoid such vehicles breaking down and obstructing traffic.

The FRSC Sagamu Unit Commander, Mohammed Abdullahi, said the Corps would do all it could to ensure the safety of all during the period.

Abdullahi urged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations.

He said that broken down vehicles along the major corridors of the command would be promptly removed to prevent traffic gridlocks.

The unit commander said the Corps recorded 33 deaths in Sagamu axis alone, between January and November.

  • Apapa gridlocks will soon be over — FRSC assures Lagosians

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that the perennial gridlocks in Apapa area which had spread to other parts of Lagos would soon be a thing of the past.

Mr Olalekan Morakinyo, FRSC Head of Operation in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that traffic lockdown was as a result of influx of tankers to Apapa ports.

Morakinyo said that the situation was compounded by the ongoing rehabilitation of roads in Apapa area, adding that the gridlocks would soon be over when the roads were completed.

According to him, many tankers came to Apapa loading bay without schedule, thus causing the gridlock.

“It begins from lkorodu road and the Western Avenue axis to Ijora.

“As soon as the road is completed all the corridors within the axis will experience free flow of traffic,” he said.

He urged motorists to be patient and obey traffic officials to ease traffic within the short period of the road rehabilitation.

Mr Semiu Oladele, a tanker driver, told NAN that the bad roads within Apapa area posed great challenges to their operations, resulting in the logjam.

NAN recalls that stakeholders, comprising traffic authorities, transport unions and port users, on Friday gave the trucks and tankers parking indiscriminately 48 hours to vacate Lagos roads.

Similarly, the Lagos State Government also on Friday asked trailers to keep away from Lagos roads until the resolution of the traffic logjam.

The Sector Commander, Wobin Gora, stated this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Mr. Gora was speaking on the outcome of the FRSC’s special Sallah patrol in the territory held between Aug. 31 and Sept. 6.

He said that 28 of the offenders were arrested for “critical offences” and were referred to relevant public health facilities for psychological tests.

“The critical offences are use of phone while driving; route violation; traffic light violation; dangerous driving and overloading,” he said.

“They are so designated because they are the most rampant life-threatening traffic law violations in the country.

“Fourteen of the offenders referred for the tests returned with negative results, while the other 14 have yet to come with their results.

“But their vehicles are in our custody, and will remain with us until we see the results of their tests.”

  • FRSC demands prosecution of Abia Speaker, wife, others over shooting of officials

Sequel to the recent shooting of some its officials, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, on Tuesday called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the fracas.

The Public Education Officer and spokesman of the Corps, Bisi Kazeem, made the call while reacting to the reported dismissal of a police corporal, Iroh Orji, over the incident.

Mr. Orji, who was an orderly to the Speaker of Abia House of Assembly, allegedly pulled the trigger on the FRSC officials at their duty post on July 15.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, announced Mr. Orji’s dismissal from the Force on Monday, saying that he was found guilty of the offence during an orderly room trial.

Mr. Kazeem told newsmen in Abuja that the policeman’s dismissal was a welcomed development.

He, however, called for the criminal prosecution of Mr. Orji and others involved in the shooting, including the Speaker, his wife and an operative of the State Security Services, SSS.

He said “the corporal’s dismissal is a welcome development, which shows that the police have zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline and lawlessness among their men.

“But, we call on the police to institute criminal proceedings against him and others involved in the act of criminality against our men.

“We have made this demand in writing to the Director of DSS in Abia, who said he had made recommendation to headquarters for disciplinary action against the operative.

“The director said the recommendation had to be verified and approved by headquarters before action could be taken.’’

Mr. Kazeem said that FRSC had also written to the police command in the state seeking the arrest of the speaker, his wife and the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident.

The speaker, Chikwendu Kalu, is alleged to have ordered the shooting of the FRSC officials, but he has denied the allegation.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the incident occurred at Arungwa Junction (near Aba) on the Enugu-Port-Harcourt highway.

Mr. Kalu’s wife, Victoria, was said to be travelling to Aba when the FRSC men flagged down her vehicle and attempted to book her for seatbelt violation.

A heated argument ensued during which she allegedly pounced on the road safety officials with the help of a female SSS operative, who was travelling with her.

Witnesses said that the woman called her husband, who arrived at the scene and allegedly ordered his orderly to shoot the FRSC officials.

When the speaker visited the victims at the hospital the next day, he was said to have been denied access into the ward where the FRSC officials were receiving treatment.

One of the wounded officials said “I saw him at the scene. What if we had died, he would have come to see our corpses.”

But, the speaker blamed the incident on “over-zealousness’’ of the security officers involved.

“I strongly condemn any over-zealousness on the side of any security personnel, be it anyone, not to now talk of being the Police, FRSC, the Army and Department of State Services.

“I think I will be the last person to encourage it because it doesn’t augur well with state and the country at large,’’ he said.
