FRSC warns passengers against boarding unsafe vehicles

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has urged passengers to exercise caution when boarding vehicles, especially during the festive season, to minimise the risk of road crashes.

Mohammed gave the warning in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO) Assistant Corps Marshal, (ACM), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Saturday in Abuja.

The FRSC boss said that the warning had become necessary as the end of the year travels kept gathering expected momentum making the roads busier than they were in the previous months.

This, he said, had also become overly imperative in view of the recent crashes that occurred in Jebba, Kwara State on Dec. 26 and the other that happened on the Owo-Ikare route, before Ose bridge on Saturday.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, however, said that the advocacy and sensitisation campaigns had been stepped up adding that commuters needed to be at alert.

‘Be mindful of drivers who show signs of recklessness and drunkenness, before embarking on or during their journeys.

“We observed that the recorded road crashes that occurred during the period above were due to the negligence or recklessness of drivers.

“Other factors were also the inability of passengers to checkmate them, call them to order or even report them to FRSC or other security agencies along their routes.

“To mitigate this risk of preventable crashes on the nation’s highways, commuters are advised to exercise caution when boarding vehicles.

“They should be aware of their surroundings and always ensure that their drivers are not under any influence before or during the trips,”he said.

Mohammed emphasised that the safety of all road users was of utmost importance, urging commuters to take responsibility for their safety.

“This effort is to support all the necessary interventions that the Corps has put in place,” he maintained.

The FRSC boss highlighted some of the roles of the passengers which included but not limited to checking the driver’s behaviour and attitude before boarding, assessing the vehicle’s condition, including tires, brakes, and light system.

The FRSC Corps Marshal believed that commuters could significantly reduce their risks of being involved in road crashes by taking these simple precautions above.

Traffic offences: FRSC to deploy mobile courts nationwide

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has directed commanding officers nationwide to make mobile court operations, a critical part of the end-of-year enforcement.

Mohammed said this in a statement issued by Corps Public Relations Officer (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The FRSC corps marshal said that the directive was a proactive approach towards maintaining sanity and reducing incidences of road traffic crashes on the highways.

He said that the move aimed at intensifying the corps’ efforts in ensuring road safety and reducing crashes during the festive season and beyond.

“The directive has become very necessary because mobile court operations help to promptly prosecute traffic offenders, serving as a deterrent to potential violators.

“To achieve maximum impact, commanding officers are expected to take responsibility for implementing mobile court operations effectively by working closely with relevant stakeholders.

“This is also including the judiciary, to ensure seamless prosecution of traffic rules violators,” he said.

The corps marshal also ordered them to ensure robust engagement and public enlightenment campaigns to educate road users about the importance of adhering to traffic laws.

Mohammed called on drivers and vehicle owners to put their vehicles in good shape, ensuring that their vehicle and drivers’ licenses are up-to-date.

He emphasised the imperative of observing established traffic rules and regulations on all roads to avoid prosecution, saying that no driver would be spared, if arrested going against the law.

How drivers can save many lives this season – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Delta Command, has advised motorists against excessive speeding during and after the yuletide celebration to minimise crashes.

Mr Frederick Ogidan, the Sector Commander, gave the advice on Wednesday during a mega rally to sensitise drivers at the Agbogidi Park.

Ogidan was represented by Mr Briggs Millah, Head of Administration and Human Resources, FRSC Asaba.

According to him, motorists, especially drivers, need to understand proper road usage to save lives.

He said, “Our aim is to save lives by reducing the level of crashes on the roads, because that is mostly felt during ember months”.

Ogidan urged motorists to adhere to the rules and regulations guiding road traffic, to ensure safety.

He also advised drivers not to overload their vehicles, to maintain good tyres and other parts needed for the vehicle to function properly.

Ogidan implored motorists to be more safety conscious during the period, as the volume of traffic would increase, adding that only the living can celebrate.

“Motorists should check their vehicle tyres, ensure that their wipers are effective, even the head lights should be functioning well.

“Obey traffic rules and regulations to prevent unnecessary loss of lives. Do not drive when drunk. Avoid wrongful overtaking to reduce mishaps during the period and beyond.

“Many lives will be saved if motorists can adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations,” he said.

  • Assaulted FRSC officer breaks silence

    Assaulted FRSC officer breaks silence

Assistant Road Marshal Habib Sayidi, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer seen being assaulted by a female passenger in a viral video, on Wednesday has explained his patience during the incident.

Sayidi spoke in Lagos at an event organised by the FRSC, Lagos Sector Command, to commend him for exhibiting professionalism while being abused when carrying out his lawful duties.

Recall that on Dec. 7, a video showing a passenger assaulting an FRSC officer trended online.

The passenger, who was annoyed that her movement was being disturbed, was in a Toyota Corolla car that was allegedly impounded by FRSC officers for having vehicle papers that had expired since December 2022.

The passenger was seen in the video hitting the FRSC official, who did not respond.

Sayidi said that the patience he exhibited was through the upbringing he got from his parents.

“My father always tells me that in any situation I find myself, I should be patient, and that was why I did not respond when the woman was hitting me.

” I am so happy with the commendation letter I got from the sector commander,” he said.

Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, of the FRSC Lagos Sector Command,  at the event, said that the command was presenting Sayidi a letter of commendation for his exemplary behaviour.

Hamzat said that the Chief Route Commander, Abdullahi Mohammad, Unit Commander, FRSC Lekki command, also received a commendation letter for ensuring order during the altercation.

He said that officers, as public servants, meet people with different mentality on the road, the good, bad and ugly.

According to him, arresting people has to do with force, and they have to gauge the amount used, so that it will not be seen as abusing the human rights of road users.

“Hence, we always advise officers to show high level of resilience, put on the canopy of professionalism to achieve the core value of the corps.

“We cannot continue to reciprocate to the abusive nature of members of the public, knowing that we are serving them, but serving them does not mean we should be abused in the way and manner that young man was.

“The public should know that we are human, we are recruited from members of the community, it is just the training that we received that made us to be resilient,” he said.

Hamzat advised the motoring public that officers and men of the road safety are there to ensure their safety, that of lives and property, hence they should not molest and intimidate them while they carry out their lawful duties.

He noted that road safety of yesterday was completely different from what obtain now, hence, they would go all out to deal within the ambit of the law, with people who violate road traffic rules or molest their staff.

“It is not acceptable, uncalled for and does not sit well with us, and we will use every means to resist abuse against our men,” he said.

Also commenting, Mr Patrick Adenusi, Managing Director, Safety Beyond Borders, a road safety Non-governmental Organisation, described the commendation letter presented to the officers as wonderful.

“What we witnessed today is wonderful, if it’s not done, the morale of the men will be dampened, and I am excited and glad that this happened within a very short time.

“It is happening when the iron is still hot and this is the best thing and time,” he said.

He said that the lady involved must be prosecuted, adding that this had happened one time too many.

Adenusi said that if nothing was done, others would be encouraged to do the same thing.

Mohammad, on his part, said that the whole scenario played out in his presence, right from the field up to the time the woman was taken to the base.

“When the incident happened, I tried calming the woman down, but she was only trying to get sympathy from the public.

“Our aim on the road is to save lives and not to cause problems but unfortunately my calming the woman down yielded no response, she kept on hitting and kicking the officer,” he said.

He said, “The attention of the FRSC has been drawn to a publication by online platforms misinforming the public about ongoing recruitment of personnel into the services of the Corps.

“This medium is to let the public know that the Corps is not recruiting at the moment, neither is there any ongoing arrangement to that effect, “he said.

Ogungbemide quoted the Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, as admonishing applicants seeking to join the services of the Corps, as well as the general public to disregard the fake and misleading publications. He said recruitment processes in the Corps had always been transparent, credible and made public.
