The theme of the campaign was “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers.”

Muhammed, who was represented by Dr Samuel Ibitoye, Ondo State Sector Commander, said that the stakeholders’ meeting was to align with the ongoing “Ember Months” campaign, which focused on commuters’ rights.

According to him, the corps has digitised its operations in line with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ for economic growth.

”This is the time for all road users to speak out against reckless driving through the instrumentality of the recently launched FRSC Mobile Application.

“In order to sustain our operations, we need to re-evaluate and adapt new strategies to align with the dynamics of contemporary transport system,” he said.

Muhammed appreciated the stakeholders for their contributions toward ensuring a safer motoring environment, and charged road users to continue to support and collaborate with FRSC.

Speaking, Ibitoye noted that with all efforts by the FRSC to reduce crashes, casualties were been recorded on the highways due to reckless driving and other traffic disobedience.

He said commuters and other road users are free to call the FRSC toll free lines 112 and 122 to report any reckless driving or disobedience to traffic laws.

“Many lives are lost in the process of any error cause by one driver and that is the more reason commuters have to speak out and report reckless drivers to FRSC,” Ibitoye said.

  • NASS told to stop bill seeking firearms for FRSC personnel

NASS told to stop bill seeking firearms for FRSC personnel

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) on Sunday faulted the National Assembly on a  bill seeking firearms for personnel of  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

National President of the CHSR, Mr Alex Omotehinse, expressed  this position at a news conference in Lagos Omotehinse said that the bill to allow FRSC officials carry firearms had scaled second reading at the House of Representatives.

According to him, the CHRS’s perspective has become imperative because of the group’s mandate and the overriding quest of civil society stakeholders to defend victims of abuse of human rights and to promote the cause of justice and peaceful co-existence.

Omotehinse said: “We are compelled to address the press on the bill before the National Assembly seeking to allow the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) access to the use of firearms on duty.

“Nigeria faces the challenge of abuse of the use of arms and ammunition in the hands of security agencies in addition to the growing proliferation of arms with illegitimate access by non-state actors.

“The worsening threats constituted to national security by the number of agencies using arms is, to say the least, worrisome.

“Rather than seeking to grant access to FRSC officials to bear arms, we expect concerted effort at streamlining the use of arms and ammunition by security agencies towards demilitarising the society.”

He said that a the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) had exacerbated  insecurity.

“In addition to mopping up illegal SALW in the possession of non-state actors, government must restrict the granting of blanket approval to agencies to procure and use arms considering the predilection for abuses by personnel.

“We ,therefore, do not see the justification for granting the FRSC the approval to carry arms. We do not see how collective national interest would be advanced by turning the FRSC into an arm of security agencies in Nigeria,” Omotehinse said.

The rights activist called on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, and members national assembly to reconsider the bill.

Omotehinse said: “We consider the proposal as needless and wrong-headed. Legalising the use of firearms for the FRSC ,which is supposed to operate in a civilized environment ,will amount to further militarising the polity.”

According to him, what Nigerians need at the moment is not an increase in the number of armed agencies, but reorientation of security agencies for civilised operation.

He said that Nigerians were looking up to lawmakers  to help and support a genuine quest for good governance that would allow Nigerians to live peacefully with one another.

Omotehinse suggested that the existing security agencies should be empowered and supported with relevant laws and oversight that would make them  function in a responsible manner.

He said that the duties of  FRSC revolve round  advocacy on road safety, operational activities to curb abuses by motorists and taking care of victims of road accidents.

“We view the proposal to grant the FRSC access to the use of arms as curious, unfounded and dangerous.

“We are concerned that the rights, comfort and safety of road users will further be endangered by the bill being debated if eventually passed into law.

“Allowing FRSC officials carry firearms would lead to further increase in abuses against motorists as well as possible escalation of incidents of extra- judicial killings,” he said.

The president urged the lawmakers to pay urgent attention to the deplorable state of roads across the country in order to make  them safer.

Also speaking, Mr Remi Shaih of Voice Of The Masses, said if FRSC were allowed to carry arms, others like Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), among others ,will agitate for same.

  • Blood-sucking demons not cause of accidents in ember months – FRSC

Blood-sucking demons not cause of accidents in ember months – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Gombe State Command has said witches and wizards are not responsible for road traffic crashes during the ember months, but recklessness of road users.

Mr Samson Kaura, the Sector Commander, Gombe State Command of FRSC stated this in Gombe on Thursday while briefing journalists on efforts to ensure safety during the 2024 Ember Months.

Kaura said that the widely-held belief by some Nigerians that evil spirits were responsible for road crashes during Ember Months was totally false and misleading.

He said that contrary to that belief that road crashes were a manipulation of witches, major causes of most auto crashes were over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and drugs, bad tyres and poor state of cars.

According to him, motorists often hide under such falsehoods to avoid being blamed for crashes.

He said that the last four months of the year was marked with increased road traffics in view of the fact that farmers were harvesting and transporting their goods.

He stated that others have wedding and other social events planned for the periods which result in high volume of traffic and “any recklessness in this regard will lead to increased crashes too.

“So this is to disabuse our minds from the beliefs that witches are the ones causing increased crashes during this period of the year.

“There is no scientific proof that crashes are caused by witches as crashes are caused by human, mechanical and environmental factors,” he said.

Kaura advised motorists in the state to always stick to traffic rules and obey all road signs while avoiding the temptation of hurrying while using roads in the state.

He said that the command would strengthen enforcement and visibility across the state towards ensuring safety as well as quick response in cases of crashes to reduce fatalities.

According to him, the risks are especially for motorcycles and tricycles, application of sudden brake or swerve maneuvers to avoid checkpoints can lead to accidents.

The lawmaker explained that checkpoints create bottlenecks, especially during peak hours, leading to traffic jams and delays coupled with alleged reports FRSC officials engaging in corrupt practices at checkpoints soliciting bribes from motorists, or impounding vehicles for minor offenses.

“Worried that the FRSC’ practice of using motorcycles and vehicles to chase commuters for traffic offenses raises concerns as the chase was always on high speed, posing a risk to bystanders, and resulting in loss of control leading to injuries and minor accidents.

“Also worried that while the FRSC goal of enforcing traffic laws is understandable, it is crucial to prioritise the safety of everyone on the road, but chasing commuters should be a last resort, employed only in situations where it is absolutely necessary and can be done safely,” he said.
