Fulani herdsmen not behind killings in Benue South – MACBAN

Mohammed Risku, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has denied that Fulani herdsmen are responsible for the recent killings and rising insecurity in the Benue South Senatorial District.

At a press conference held in Makurdi on Sunday, Risku expressed his surprise at the accusations of kidnapping directed at Fulani herdsmen in the region. He also revealed that he had met with all the traditional rulers in Otukpo to propose the creation of a peace committee that would include local youth to collaborate in the fight against banditry.

Risku emphasized, “If we come together in this effort, there will be no hiding place for these criminals. I’m appealing to the people of Otukpo, including the chairman and all security agencies, to help establish a peace committee. This would make it easier to identify and address the criminal elements causing harm.”

The MACBAN chairman made his remarks in his native language, with the State Secretary, Ibrahim Galma, providing translation.

The Otukpo community in Benue South has recently witnessed a spike in violent incidents, including killings, kidnappings, and other forms of insecurity, further escalating tensions in the area.

  • Tinubu should arrest, prosecute Sunday Igboho – Miyetti Allah

Tinubu should arrest, prosecute Sunday Igboho – Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN has insisted Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemi, popularly known as Igboho should be arrested and prosecuted by the Federal Government over his ‘unlawful statement’ on Fulani herders.

MACBAN National President, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, said this in response to Igboho’s remarks that Fulani herders should be expunged from the Southwest.

MACBAN noted that if Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, could be arrested and prosecuted, then the same thing should apply to Igboho.

Igboho, who recently returned to Nigeria after about two years of detention in Benin Republic, accused Fulani herders of killing farmers in the Southwest.

In a statement he signed, Ngelzarma said: “We call on the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) and relevant security agencies to arrest and prosecute Sunday Igboho for making this unlawful statement that amounts to treason because he is asking for the actualisation of Oduduwa nation.

“His statements are unlawful. If Nnamdi Kanu will be held behind bars for a similar offence, we see no reason why Sunday Igboho will be allowed to go scot-free without being arrested and prosecuted.”

Gov. Sule dissociates Nasarawa State of involvement in formation of Fulani vigilance group

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Monday in Lafia distanced the state government from the setting up of a Fulani vigilance group in the state.

He dissociated the state government from the group when members of the House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon Danladi Jatau, paid him a solidarity visit after his Supreme Court re-election verdict.

The governor said that the state government did not recognise the Fulani vigilance group just as it had not endorsed any other such group.

Sule said the Executive arm of government would have sent a bill for the establishment of the group to the Legislature if government was involved in it.

“We have not recognised any vigilance group.

“As far as we are concerned, there is only one vigilance group recognised by the Federal Government which we have also recognised in the state.

“We have recognised community policing,’’ the governor stressed.

He added that his administration would continue to promote peace in the state, stressing that security agencies were already investigating the issue of the Fulani vigilance group.

“The security agencies are already investigating the issue. We refused to be part of it because it was purely issues of the security agencies,’’ he said.

Gov. Sule said also that as a peace promoter, he would never encourage insecurity in Nasarawa State.

He appreciated the speaker for being up and doing in uniting members of the House as well as for preaching unity and peace among communities in the state.

Sule also thanked the legislators for giving the government all necessary and needed support to succeed.

Earlier, the speaker assured of the legislature’s preparedness to cooperate with the governor for the overall development of Nasarawa State.

He assured of his continued determination to unite members of the House and to preach unity and peace to various communities in the state.

On Jan. 17, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Sociocultural Association launched a 1,114-member Nomad Volunteer Vigilance Group in Lafia.

The association’s national president, Alhaji Abdullahi Bodejo, said at the launch that the volunteer vigilantes would adhere strictly to Nigeria’s existing laws in their operations.

He said its primary objective was to address various security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling in Nasarawa State.

Bodejo urged the volunteers to work in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to ensure a more comprehensive approach to security across Nasarawa State.

He assured that the group was not created to replace or undermine the nation’s security agencies but to complement their work.

Insecurity: We’re ready to end all killings, using native charms, Fulani herders promise Tinubu

Apparently disturbed by the continued mention of Fulani herders in killings across the country, a socio-cultural organisation, the Fulbe United for Peace (FUP), has vowed to deploy traditional means to fight criminals masquerading as Fulani.

This was contained in a communiqué issued after a national leadership consultative meeting convened by FUP with the support of Arewa New Agenda (ANA) held on Sunday in Abuja, leaders of the group from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said this was part of their determination to make a significant contribution to national development.

The group, according to the communiqué signed by its national president, Ardo Aliyu Liman Bobboi, “agreed to develop strategies to bring all Fulbe together by using a traditional approach that is deeply rooted in the Fulbe tradition and culture—Hombudu—to bring an end to any form of criminality in the name of Fulbe.”

Other agreements contained in the communiqué are: “Developing a strategic network with relevant authorities for Fulbe youth nationwide; seeking a local workable solution from within; and reaching out to other interest groups to promote national forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing of the wounds that have been inflicted on our great country, Nigeria.”

While pointing out that Fulbe is in a position as an ethnic and socio-cultural association to make the most effective contribution to national development, the communiqué asked the government to consult with Ardo’s leadership on issues of policy that concern the group.

It further pointed out that the Fulbe consciously and strategically mobilised nationwide and supported President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

To this end, it declared its support for all the concerted efforts to bring peace and security to the country by the incumbent government led by President Tnubu and other stakeholders across the country.

  • ‘I battle Fulani herdsmen every year’ – Babachir Lawal gives reason for not supporting Atiku

‘I battle Fulani herdsmen every year’ – Babachir Lawal gives reason for not supporting Atiku

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF) Babachir Lawal, has revealed why he will never support the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Lawal reveals he battles with Fulani herdsmen every year after their animals invade his farms and eat up his crops.

He also claimed that Atiku’s Presidential ambition would not fly because it will amount to the transition of government from one Muslim Fulani president to another Muslim Fulani president and would be the worst form of Muslim-Muslim ticket.

The reaction of the former SGF was provoked by trending news that he has abandoned Peter Obi to work for Atiku.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, Babachir Lawal dismissed the news insisting that he would not support any Fulani person that may undermine Nigeria’s unity through religion or ethnicity.

The statement reads in part “I have just seen a trending news that I have abandoned Peter Obi to work for Atiku Abubakar.

There is nothing far from the truth as this. I have never contemplated joining PDP since its formation as I view the PDP as the worst form of a collection of oligarchs and reactionaries.

“Besides, I find myself every year battling Fulani herdsmen determined to have their animals invade my farms and eat up my crops every year. This is aside from their determination to take over the ancestral farmlands of my kinsmen as they do everywhere in the North. All these they do in a cavalier manner while their elite kinsmen dominant in the government keep mute.

“Moreover, I view a transition of government from one Muslim Fulani President to another as the worst form of Muslim-Muslim ticket. It also represents ethnic domination by one ethnic group over others. I remain a Peter Obi diehard. Any news to the contrary is fake news.”

  • Plateau attacks: Irigwe, Fulani communities sign peace pact

Plateau attacks: Irigwe, Fulani communities sign peace pact

Irigwe and Fulani ethnic groups in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau, have signed peace pact, as part of efforts to end attacks in the area.

The document was signed by Chairman of Irigwe/Fulani Peace Committee, Rev. John Pawa, the Co-Chairman, Alhaji Yau’u Idris, and Chairman of Bassa Local Government, Mr Stephen Igmala, at Jebbu Bassa.

Speaking at the event, Director-General of Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA), Dr Joseph Lengman, said that the document was produced by a 16-man committee, comprising the two ethnic groups.

According to him, the groups are from Irigwe chiefdom in Miango district of Bassa council area.

He said that the committee held series of consultations, conducted investigations on the causes of the conflicts, did impact assessment and proffered modalities for sustainable peace.

Lengman said that the document stated that humanity should be the fulcrum for sustainable peaceful co-existence through which disputes would be resolved through dialogue and mutual respect for values, while individual beliefs would be raised above parochial interest.

He thanked Gov. Simon Lalong for the peace initiative, aimed at ensuring peaceful co-existence between the two communities.

The director-general also commended the ethnic groups for signing the documents, coupled with their resolve to co-exist peacefully in spite of their differences.

In his remarks, the Mbra Ngwe Irigwe (paramount leader) of Irigwe nation, Rev. Ronku Aka, said that peace was critical to the progress of any society.

According to him, the two ethnic groups have mutual benefits to derive from living together.

He thanked the state government, non-government organisations and other key stakeholders for their peace efforts in the area, while calling for prayers to ensure adherence to the agreement.

In his remarks, the governor said that the signed document could be used for future interventions, either by state or non-state actors in the council area, urging the ethnic groups to enlighten their members on its content.

“It is your document and you must ensure that you enlighten and sensitise your respective communities on the importance of respecting all the articles contained therein,” he said.

Lalong said that his administration would support the implementation of the agreement, especially the recommendations that required appropriate policy response, to address the root causes of the inter-communal conflict.

“Similarly, I have also directed PPBA to work in conjunction with security agencies as well as local and international partners to support the safe return and resettlement of all the victims of violent conflict in Miango and environs.

“This also involves the provision of pyscho-social support and additional trainings to youth groups and women,” he said.

The governor thanked members of the committee, traditional and religious leaders in the area, NGOs, security agencies and other stakeholders for their efforts at mitigating the violent clashes which had lingered in the area for more than two decades.

“We are proud to note that there is a general decline in the spate of ethno-religious crisis and violent attacks, far lower than the scale witnessed before we came into office,” he said.

The governor said that the agreement was the product of the voluntarily commitment between the two warring communities to finding solutions to the recurring violence, stressing that the state government only facilitated the process.

Representatives of the two ethnic groups promised to sensitise their people on the need for peaceful co-existence and called for measures against any defaulter.

Other signatories included: the two chairmen of Plateau State Inter-Religious Council (PSIR), Rev Pandang Yamsat and Dr Muhammadu Haruna, as well as the director-general of PPBA.

Many NGOs, ethnic groups and religious organizations, such as CAN and JNI, attended the event.

  • Our Fulani abductors told us they’ll take over Nigeria after buying enough weapons – Prelate Uche narrates ordeal

The Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Uche, has revealed that their Fulani abductors vowed that after acquiring enough armoury they take over Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that the Prelate was kidnapped along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia.

He was however released after paying a total sum of N100 million as ransom.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of his abductors on Wednesday, the prelate said that he was tortured to the point that he nearly lost his sight after hitting his right eye on a tree.

He said, they were eight in number, all Fulani herders, with one who claimed to have been born in Abia State.

According to him, some military personnel from the North were aiding the kidnappers in their activities in the region.

“These people came out from the bush; they divided themselves into 3 places; some people fired at us and there was another group in front to make sure that we didn’t run away; they fired shots at our vehicle and eventually, they abducted 3 of us.

“The communication man of the church was able to escape, the driver was able to escape; they abducted me, the bishop of Owerri and my chaplain and they took us to the bush and were torturing us. It was in the process of that torture that I hit my right eye on a tree. Even when blood was flowing and I was soaking my eyes with a handkerchief, they didn’t feel like anything happened.

“All they said was that we should follow them; that they were not actually against Nigerian citizens but against the government, that the government is a bad government.

“They are Fulani boys; all the 8 are Fulanis; they said the day they will see the president or any of his representatives they will chew him raw; that he is their brother but he has disappointed them and has disappointed Nigeria.

“I said even though I’m part of the government, I’m a churchman, I’m not a government official; they said okay, that is what has saved you, we would have killed you outright without asking for any ransom but now that you are a churchman, let’s go inside the bush.

“I trekked up for to 15 kilometres but I knew that we were rigmaroling, going up, going down and eventually at 11 pm they said okay now we can negotiate; each of us will pay N50 million and we are going to pay N150 million. I thought it was a joke; I said we were going to pay N10 million and they said what? Don’t say that; they lifted their knife to cut me, I said please hold on.”

He added that the leader of the group is about 35 years old while the others are about 18.

He said they had taken his rings, chain, and the money they had on them and insisted on N150 million ransom.

The clergyman said the abductors later reduced the ransom to N100 million, warning that if they negotiate, they would be killed.

“I said okay. We will pay you N100 million. After some time, they said where is the money and I said this is Sunday night, how can we get money this night and you know that there is this sit-at-home in Igbo land. We can’t afford the money now, be patient till morning, we will make contacts.”

Uche said the kidnappers lost patience, laid Bishop Dennis Mark down, raised a knife to cut him, while another pointed a gun at him (prelate) to show that they were serious,

“I told them we will raise the money for you. But the irony of it, where they were situated, the soldiers, all of Fulani extraction, Nigerian soldiers, they were there at Lomara junction and these boys were going behind them. Meanwhile, they kept their cows somewhere, numbering about 200.

He said some people were taking care of the cows while the abductors were parading them around the bush until they settled at a place.

“They said ‘when are you bringing the money?’ I said by 12 noon, I will call the people I’ve contacted whether the money had been raised and I called them, they said that they were gathering the money and they heard it because they said I will use my phone to talk, they can’t use their phone, they don’t want to be tracked.

“Their leader was born in Igbo land but his parents have died. He said he was born around Umuahia Amuzukwu and his father was a cow dealer, the boy understood Igbo,” he said.

He said the leader threatened to kill them if they informed security operatives when they had raised the ransom of N100 million.

The leader asked them to buy 5 ‘Ghana must go’ bags and put N20 million in each bag. They left to pick the ransom while four others stayed behind with guns.

He said, “Around 5. 30pm, the youngest boy who I think is a younger brother to their commander said ‘Oga, congratulations, you are free, you can go now. We have got our money, you can go. Let me show you the road’.

“They took us to Old road, where they wrote ‘welcome to Imo’ and ‘goodbye from Abia’.

“They told us that after buying enough weapons, they were going to bring all those people that were driven away from Zamfara, Katsina, Sambisa Forest, that they are all coming to locate themselves in Igbo land and deal with us.

“He said do you know Ibadan expressway? We are in all the bush there, we are also in the South-South, we are waiting for the slightest signal, we will finish you people and take over this land. They claimed that Nigeria belongs to Fulani.”

The priest maintained that military personnel of Fulani extraction were aiding the kidnappers who disguise as herders in the daytime but are kidnappers at night.

He called on the government to take a decisive action “otherwise what is happening in the north will be a child’s play”.

He said it was the Methodist Church Nigeria and members of the church that made efforts to secure his release and not security agencies of the government.

Ban on Fulani cow meat stands in South-East – IPOB replies Northern Coalition

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has reacted to the threat by the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) that the North will stop engagement of commercial activities and transporting of North-made products to the South East of Nigeria.

The CNG this last week had reacted to IPOB statement that there shall be no slaughtering of cows in the region.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB said there were enough evidence that some herdsmen had sex with their cows, noting that it is an abomination in Igboland to eat beef from such animals.

It also stated that the ban on cows from herders would prevent raping of their women and other evil deeds perpetrated by the herders.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) recalls that IPOB had issued a statement banning the consumption of Fulani cow meat in the South East from April 2022.

  • Lady narrates how she escaped from kidnappers who killed Sowore’s brother

Lady narrates how she escaped from kidnappers who killed Sowore’s brother

One of the five people abducted Saturday along Benin-Lagos road, Emmanuella Anyanwu, has given an insight in how she escaped from the den of her captors.

According to her report, her abductors had asked her if she could pay N10 million to secure her release.

The deadly kidnappers were the ones who killed late Olajide Sowore on Saturday; recall the ugly incident was earlier reported by TheNewsGuru (TNG).

She disclosed this while narrating her ordeal to reporters at the State Police Command in Benin City.

‘On Friday, we were coming from Lagos to the East and our vehicle broke down around Okada in the outskirts of Benin. We passed the night in the vehicle,’ she said.

‘At about 6:30 am to 7 am, some men came out from the bush shooting at us and we surrendered.

‘They took our belongings including our phones and matched us into the bush. It took us almost two hours to get to their camp. They blindfolded us.

‘So, they started calling us one after the other and I was the last person they called. They asked me where I was coming from and where I was going.

‘I told them that I was coming from Lagos and going to Imo State for my husband’s burial. They asked how many kids I have, I told them two and I also told them I sell groundnut in Lagos.

‘They asked if I was the one providing the money to bury my husband and I told them his brother will do that. They also wanted to know what my sister is doing and I told them she sells bread in the village.

‘They asked if I know them, I said no. They asked if I know the police and army, I told them I know those ones. They told me they were kidnappers and said they abducted me because of ransom.

‘They said if I don’t have money they will take my life. I asked them how much they wanted. But one of them was furious I was asking them questions.

‘I told them I needed to know the ransom. They asked if I had N10 million and I told them there was no way to get that kind of money.

‘I told them I will give them N500,000 from money gathered from my village. One of them said I was a fool and they told me to sit down.

‘Then it started raining heavily and they went away and brought one man again.’

She said she miraculously escaped and traced her way with the help of a mobile mask.

‘So, they took something from that man and their attention was on it. So, I remove my blindfold and decide to escape but I decided to shelve the plan till midnight. But my spirit told me to escape because I would not have the opportunity to do so in the night because the abductors don’t sleep in the night. I crept and that was how I escaped.

‘I saw a mast far away and I started trekking towards it. After one hour or more, I got to a road and saw an elderly man on a motorcycle and I asked him to take me to the police station, which he did. We were two ladies and three men,’ she said.

Anyanwu said she sustained some wounds while trying to escape.

‘They were very harsh and warned us not to look at their faces, they also warned us not to talk to each other. They were beating the men but spared the women. I sustained the wounds on my body when I was trying to find my way out of the bush,’ she said.

When asked if she was aware of the death of one Olajide Sowore, she said she only witnessed the shooting but could not tell if anyone died.

‘They were shooting at cars but I cannot say if anyone died,’ she said.
