EPL: Fulham fury as Chelsea clinch controversial derby win

Chelsea continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League (PL) season with a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge, a result that means they have now lost just one of their past 12 league games.

It has been another busy week in the transfer window for Chelsea, with Christopher Nkunku joining AC Milan and Nicolas Jackson closing in on a loan move to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, an imminent new arrival, Alejandro Garnacho, was in the stands to watch his future employers struggle against a well-drilled Fulham outfit during the first 45 minutes. There were early half-chances for João Pedro and Liam Delap, but the latter’s hamstring injury around the quarter-hour mark threw the hosts off-kilter, with the Cottagers subsequently causing plenty of problems.

In fact, they thought they had taken the lead midway through the half when 18-year-old Josh King finished off a counter-attack for what would have been his first PL goal. However, much to the chagrin of Marco Silva, who was apoplectic in his protests, the goal was ruled out as Rodrigo Muniz was judged to have fouled Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up.

As the first half progressed, Chelsea did improve slightly, and only an instinctive Bernd Leno save denied Tyrique George, yet from the resulting corner, Pedro headed Enzo Fernández’s ball home to give the Blues a perhaps undeserved HT lead.

Not long after the restart, VAR was again Silva’s nemesis as Chelsea doubled their lead. Chalobah’s cross hit the raised arm of Ryan Sessegnon and, after a trip to the pitchside monitor, referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot. From 12 yards, Fernández made no mistake to give Enzo Maresca’s men breathing space.

That second strike knocked the stuffing out of Fulham and, had Pedro not been caught in two minds when one-on-one with Leno, the home team’s margin of victory may well have been greater.

Ultimately, the Blues had to make do with just the two goals, but that is enough to temporarily take them to the top of the table. On the other hand, Fulham, and particularly Silva, will feel aggrieved with the manner in which they were defeated by their local rivals. It means they are still waiting for their first win of the season, although this is also their opening loss in all competitions.

Amorim details what went wrong in Man Utd draw

Man United manager Ruben Amorim has detailed what went wrong in their frustrating 1-1 Premier League draw with Fulham on Sunday.

Captain Bruno Fernandes had the chance to give the visitors the lead from the spot just before half-time but put it well above Bernd Leno’s crossbar.

Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal from Leny Yoro’s header finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute before Emile Smith Rowe restored parity in the 78th.

Man United are without a win in their first two Premier League games of the new season with Ruben Amorim still struggling at the helm

Speaking to the press after the game, Amorim lamented his side’s failure to kill off the game at Craven Cottage.

He said: “I think we scored the goal and then we forgot about how we play. We want to win so badly, and that is a good feeling, that we scored a goal and everyone on the pitch was thinking, ‘Let’s hold onto the advantage and try to win the game’.”

“For me that is the moment that we have to enjoy more and push the opponent. We tried to press the opponent super high and left a lot of space.”

“We have to grow up a lot as a team. For me the most important thing is that during the week they were working really hard, today we worked really hard, and we are going to improve.”

Sterling emerges as shock target for EPL rivals

Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling is reportedly a shock target for West London rivals Fulham as he looks set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 30-year-old has been told he has no future within Enzo Maresca’s squad having spent last season on loan at Arsenal.

Sterling struggled to establish himself in North London, scoring just one goal and providing five assists in his 28 games across all competitions.

According to the Telegraph, Fulham could be set to offer him a lifeline and an opportunity to revive his career after disappointing spells in London so far.

Marco Silva is understood to be pushing the club to bolster their attacking line-up and a player with Sterling’s experience would certainly be a major coup.

He may not have been at his best over the past few seasons but the winger has won four Premier Leagues, among other trophies, throughout his stellar career.

  • Chelsea pull off late winning fight-back against Fulham

Chelsea pull off late winning fight-back against Fulham

Chelsea secured a huge win in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) race as they battled back from behind late on to win 2-1 away to Fulham in the Premier League, ending their eight-match unbeaten away league run in the process.

Victories against Chelsea have been few and far between down the years for Fulham, but they thought they’d got off to the perfect start against the Blues here when Andreas Pereira poked home from inside the six-yard box.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian, the offside flag and a brief VAR check ruled that there were a couple of offsides in the build-up.

That only served as a temporary reprieve for the Blues, who soon found themselves behind.

They were the masters of their own downfall in that sense, as Reece James had his pocket picked by Ryan Sessegnon, who strode forward, found Alex Iwobi on the edge of the area, and drilled a left-footed effort from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

Chelsea responded fairly well to falling behind, pinning Fulham in their own half at times, but creating any clear-cut opportunities was proving problematic for the UCL chasers.

Chants of “attack, attack, attack” by Chelsea fans for the second week running certainly weren’t helping their cause, but the fans were far from shy in making their feelings known.

The Blues heeded the plea from their travelling supporters after the break and did create a clear-cut sight of goal.

HT substitute Malo Gusto was involved, as his cross worked its way to the feet of Pedro Neto, but his wicked drive from 12 yards was blocked by the legs of Bernd Leno.

Enzo Maresca was looking to his senior players to dig them out of the mire, and when Cole Palmer broke into the box and worked a yard of space, it looked like they’d done just that.

But when he skewed his effort horribly wide, it appeared it wasn’t going to be Chelsea’s day.

Parked inside the Fulham half for most of the second 45, Chelsea were giving themselves a great chance of drawing level, and they eventually did so through academy graduate Tyrique George, who pounced on a loose ball and arrowed an effort into the bottom corner.

Chelsea had all the momentum going into the closing stages, and they translated that dominance into a late winner.

There was nothing fortunate about it either, as Pedro Neto controlled, swivelled, and thundered an effort into the roof of Leno’s net to send the away end into raptures and move Chelsea into the top five.

Defeat isn’t catastrophic to Fulham, but they did miss the chance to move into eighth, which could be enough for a European spot come the end of the season, depending on who wins the FA Cup.

FA Cup: Palace thump Fulham to reach semi-final

Crystal Palace won a sixth successive away match across all competitions without conceding, with this 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage sending them through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the third time in the last nine years.

The visitors were able to welcome striker Jean-Philippe Mateta back into the starting XI for the first time since his horror injury in the previous round, but his impact was limited by a dominant start from Fulham.

Opposite number Rodrigo Muniz could have opened the scoring inside two minutes after bullying his way through the Palace defence, but his left-footed strike was curled wide of the target.

Marco Silva’s men were in complete command, but working Dean Henderson was proving tricky, as Andreas Pereira proved when he dragged an effort wide following some great work down the left by Calvin Bassey.

After a stoppage in play at the first half’s midway point, Palace gained a foothold in the contest and finally threatened through Jefferson Lerma, whose outside-of-the-foot volley cannoned off the crossbar.

That was a sign of things to come as the Eagles broke the deadlock in some style through Eberechi Eze, who backed up his maiden England goal by dropping a shoulder to beat a man on the edge of the area before brilliantly curling into the bottom corner.

Four of his last five Palace goals have come in cup competitions, and he turned provider to double the visitors’ lead before the break with a pinpoint cross to the near post that was headed home by Ismaïla Sarr.

With no improvement evident from his side upon the restart, Silva turned to his bench and introduced Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traoré in an attempt to change the game.

The Cottagers were immediately more dynamic, with Willian forcing Henderson into a smart save before Bassey was denied by a stunning block from Sarr at point-blank range.

Those misses proved especially costly, as Palace regrouped and found the net again to put the contest to bed.

Daichi Kamada released fellow substitute Eddie Nketiah to slot past Bernd Leno, putting the seal on a comprehensive victory that books their place in the semi-final at Wembley.

Fulham’s wait for a first appearance at that stage since 2001/02 continues, while they’ve now failed to win any of the last seven H2Hs on their own turf.

Fulham defeat Man Utd to reach FA Cup quarter-finals

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was the hero with two saves in the penalty shootout to knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

After three precise spot-kicks from both sides, Leno denied Victor Lindelof, then, after skipper Antonee Robinson had extended Fulham’s perfect record, the German also kept out Joshua Zirkzee’s effort to send the Cottagers into the quarter-finals.

Fulham had taken the lead in first-half stoppage time when Calvin Bassey was left free at the far post to head in from close range after Rodrigo Muniz had flicked on a corner.

But, days after former United captain Roy Keane had condemned the influence of current skipper Bruno Fernandes, the Portuguese dragged his side level with a superb equaliser, driving home a low shot from the edge of the area after Diogo Dalot had found him with a pass from the touchline.

Both sides could have won it without the need for penalties. Emile Smith-Rowe, denied superbly by Andre Onana before the home side levelled, was repelled by the Cameroon international again before the tie went to extra-time.

Then, 17-year-old United substitute Chido Obi flicked a shot towards goal that Leno kept out with an outstanding reaction save.

It added to a catalogue of saves from Leno that also included denying United substitute Alejandro Garnacho. The real heroics were saved for the shootout though as Fulham continue to dream of emulating their only FA Cup final appearance in 1975.

  • How Jota saved 10-man Liverpool in Fulham draw, Arsenal frustrated

How Jota saved 10-man Liverpool in Fulham draw, Arsenal frustrated

Diogo Jota saved Liverpool as the Premier League leaders recovered from Andy Robertson’s early red card to snatch a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Arsenal’s title challenge was dented by a goalless stalemate against Everton on Saturday.

With just four minutes left at Anfield, Arne Slot’s side were in danger of losing for just the second time in 15 top-flight games this season.

But Jota grabbed a valuable equaliser as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches since a loss to Nottingham Forest in September.

With last weekend’s Merseyside derby at Everton postponed by severe weather, Liverpool have now gone two league games without a win following their 3-3 draw at Newcastle.

The Reds sit five points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who can close the gap with a win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Liverpool were rocked in the 11th minute as Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira met Antonee Robinson’s cross with an agile volley that deflected in off Robertson.

The Reds suffered another blow when Scotland left-back Robertson was sent off in the 17th minute for a professional foul on Harry Wilson.

But Slot’s men have made a habit of coming from behind this season and Cody Gakpo equalised in the 47th minute with a stooping header from Mohamed Salah’s cross.

The Dutch forward’s ninth goal in all competitions this season was the prelude to a period of sustained Liverpool pressure.

But Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz delivered a sucker punch as he bundled over the line from Robinson’s cross in the 76th minute.

That set the stage for a dramatic finale as Jota levelled in the 86th minute with a cool finish past Bernd Leno from the edge of the area.

Arsenal failed to take advantage of Liverpool’s rare stumble as the Gunners were kept at bay on a frustrating afternoon at the Emirates Stadium.

The north Londoners have become a force from set-pieces, scoring 23 goals from corners since the start of last season.

But their lack of firepower outside of that route has been questioned this season and once again they were hampered by a failure to turn pressure and possession into goals.

After a second successive league draw, third-placed Arsenal remain six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand on last season’s runners-up.

Newcastle handed Ruud van Nistelrooy his first defeat as Leicester boss with a 4-0 rout at St James’ Park.

Former Manchester United striker Nistelrooy had taken four points from his first two games since replacing the sacked Steve Cooper.

But Newcastle ended that encouraging start as Jacob Murphy drilled a clinical finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area in the 30th minute.

Bruno Guimaraes nodded in Newcastle’s second goal in the 47th minute after Lewis Hall headed Anthony Gordon’s free-kick toward the Brazilian.

Alexander Isak bagged the Magpies’ third two minutes later with a close-range finish and Murphy struck again on the hour to leave Leicester two points above the relegation zone.

Jack Taylor’s stoppage-time goal gave Ipswich a priceless 2-1 win over relegation rivals Wolves at Molineux.

Kieran McKenna’s team went ahead through Matt Doherty’s 15th-minute own goal after Wolves made a hash of clearing Liam Delap’s cross.

Just as Wolves fans were calling for chairman Jeff Shi and owners Fosun to sell the club, Matheus Cunha grabbed a 72nd-minute equaliser as his shot beat Arijanet Muric’s weak attempted save.

But Taylor headed home from a 94th-minute corner to seal Ipswich’s second league win since their promotion to the top tier.

Third-bottom Ipswich are just one point adrift of safety, while second-bottom Wolves are three points behind them after an 11th loss in 16 league games piled further pressure on boss Gary O’Neil.

Fulham manager, Marco Silva reflects on 1-0 loss to Manchester United

Fulham’s Premier League campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Despite creating scoring opportunities, Fulham were unable to capitalize and ultimately conceded to substitute Joshua Zirkzee.

In his post-match assessment, Manager Marco Silva identified a loss of emotional control as a key factor in the defeat.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining balance and composure, particularly in open and intense matches.

Silva noted that Fulham’s decision-making was rushed, leading to quick losses of possession and ultimately, the conceding of the goal.

He expressed his desire for the team to manage their emotions better and avoid letting the game become too emotional.”

    Chelsea scheduled medical for defender

Chelsea have scheduled a medical for Fulham player Tosin Adarabioyo.

The defender will leave Fulham when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Adarabioyo had also fielded interest from Newcastle and Manchester United, but is now a step away from signing for Chelsea.

Sky Sports says a medical is being organised for this week.

Chelsea are said to be the “clear favourites” for Adarabioyo’s signing, but will stay “cautious” until the deal is completed.
