EPL: Fabregas predicts outcome of United vs Arsenal, Fulham vs City

Cesc Fabregas, former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder,  has backed the Gunners  to secure a ‘comfortable’ win at Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend.

He added that the visit of City to Fulham will be tricky.

Making his prediction on the Planet Premier League podcast, Fabregas said: “I consider it a big game, Arsenal v United, United v Arsenal, they have always been special games.

“It’s true, United at the moment are not at the level that they were in the past, we can all agree with that. I can see Arsenal being too strong for them at the moment.

“I do think Arsenal play by memory, they are confident, they believe, they have the experience. They have grown over the last year, they have improved, so I do think Arsenal will win that game comfortably.

“I will not say easily because United is United and the history, at the end of the day, the badge on the chest, we need to respect that and Old Trafford is Old Trafford.

“But again, I consider Arsenal are too strong at the moment.

“Fulham is a tricky one for Manchester City.

“They’ve had a good season, a very complete season. They’ve improved in many areas, they have a good coach so, yeah, I believe it’s going to be at least tricky for Manchester City to obtain the three points.”

EPL: Nottingham Forest move from drop zone

Three first-half goals on Tuesday earned Nottingham Forest a vital 3-1 victory over Fulham in their battle to stay away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The hosts were irrepressible in the first period with Callum Hudson-Odoi opening the scoring after nine minutes and Chris Wood doubling Forest’s advantage in the 19th minute.

Stunned Fulham manager Marco Silva made a triple substitution but it got worse for the visitors before the interval as the outstanding Morgan Gibbs-White made it 3-0 in stoppage time with a clinical finish.

Fulham reacted well in the second half and threw themselves a lifeline when Tosin Adarabioyo headed in from a corner.

Both sides hit the woodwork but, despite a few jitters, Forest held firm to move to 25 points, three ahead of Luton Town who occupy the last relegation place.

Forest were left deep in trouble when they were docked four points last month for breaching Premier League financial rules.

But they have responded impressively to that setback with a draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, followed by Tuesday’s win over Fulham courtesy of a barnstorming first half.

Nuno Espirito-Santo’s side, fired-up by a vociferous City Ground crowd, took the lead inside 10 minutes as Gibbs-White’s ball released Hudson-Odoi who cut back inside to dispatch a shot past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

Hudson-Odoi wasted another chance shortly afterwards but Forest extended their lead when Wood caught Leno off guard with a shot from the edge of the area.

Anthony Elanga should have made it 3-0 and with Fulham being overwhelmed.

Manager Marco Silva hauled off Alex Iwobi, Sasa Lukic and Harry Wilson with Adama Traore, Tom Cairney and Willian coming on to replace them.

Forest were relentless going forward though and Gibbs-White rounded off a sensational half with a shot into the far corner to send the Forest fans into raptures.

Adarabioyo’s header soon after the restart caused some concern in the home ranks but Forest were soon firing again with Neco Williams having a shot deflected against the crossbar.

Fulham were much improved though and had Kenny Tete’s header gone in instead of glancing off the crossbar it would have ensured a nerve-jangling finale.

EPL: Why Fulham defeated Arsenal 2-1 at Craven Cottage – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given detailed reasons why his side lost by 2-1 to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday evening.

Despite the Gunners scoring first, aul Jiménez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid scored a goal in each half to help the home side secure maximum points against the Gunners.

Bukayo Saka put the visitors ahead inside 5 minute of the encounter but Fulham equalized and scored the winner in the second half.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Arteta said the Gunners were not good enough against the host.

“We weren’t good enough. We didn’t have enough rhythm threat. Defensively, we were second best,” Arteta said.

He added: “Painful and a sad day. That’s how I would sum it up. We had the chance to be top of the table after 20 games. Three days ago, we lost a game that we deserved to win; today was a different story.”

The result leaves Arsenal in fourth position on the Premier League table, behind Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Liverpool.

EPL: Fulham beat Arsenal 2-1 at Craven Cottage, Tottenham thrash Bournemouth 3-1

Arsenal’s hopes of winning their first premier League title in years have been dented after a 2-1 loss against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Bukayo Saka’s early goal was followed by a rousing Fulham comeback, and goals from Raul Jimenez and Bobby De Cordova-Reid condemned the Gunners to fourth position.
Bernd Leno could only tip Gabriel Martinelli’s curling shot straight into the path of the onrushing Bukayo Saka who tapped home.
Fulham responded in the 29th minute when Raul Jimenez equalized for the home side, when he stretched to turn home Antonee Robinson’s cross at the back post.
The home side continued to dominate after the break despite Arteta’s decision to replace Jakub Kiwior with Takehiro Tomiyasu.
They eventually took the lead when Bobby De Cordova-Reid tapped home after a scramble at a corner.
Elsewhere at London Stadium,  Pape Matar Sarr had a contrasting experience in the Premier League, with highs and lows, as Tottenham bounced back with a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth in a thrilling matchday 20 encounter.
The result leaves Tottenham occupying the 5th position a point behind last season’s runners-up Arsenal.

EPL: Chelsea finally win second game of the season

Chelsea football club on Monday night secured their second win of the season in the English Premier League after defeating Fulham FC 2-0 away at Craven Cottage courtesy of two quick goals from Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja.

The Ukrainian gave the away side the lead in the 18th minute when he controlled Levi Colwill’s chipped cross with his chest before finishing under Bernd Leno.

Broja netted the second one minute after to register his first goal for the Blues since October, 2022 as Chelsea climbed up from 15th position to 11th on the log.

All efforts by Fulham to score in the game proved abortive as the only serious chance they had fell to Sasa Lukic in the second half when his shot from inside the six-yard box was well saved by Robert Sanchez.

Mudryk was withdrawn at half-time with a quad injury but boss Mauricio Pochettino was hopeful the winger would be fit enough to play at Burnley on Saturday.

Pochettino was pleased to see his side take three points and deserve it.

He said: “We got what we deserved. The first half we were much better than Fulham. The second half we were in control. I’m so happy because the players needed this victory and so did the fans. We now have two victories in less than one week. We needed to feel the taste of victory, and another clean sheet also.”

  • Arsenal coach told me ‘you have to leave the club’ – Leno

Arsenal coach told me ‘you have to leave the club’ – Leno

Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno admits his departure from Arsenal was bitter.

The Germany international is in his second season with the Cottagers.

Leno told The Times: “When I realised it wasn’t a question of performance, I immediately thought I had to leave. I don’t know if they didn’t want two strong goalkeepers. I had one year left on my contract and it was the last chance I could be sold.”

Leno then discussed the battle between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya at Arsenal.

“It happened again after the international break. I was thinking, ‘This is pretty much the same thing that happened to me!’ I was thinking about Aaron, he’s a really good guy. I know how it feels, there are some similarities. When I wanted to fight for my position, the goalkeeping coach told me: ‘You have to leave the club’.”

  • EPL: Fulham’s manager left fuming over controversial Ake goal

EPL: Fulham’s manager left fuming over controversial Ake goal

Fulham’s manager Marco Silva was left seething over a controversial goal in their 5-1 hammering by Manchester City on Saturday.

He argued that it was “a huge mistake” and the turning point of the game.

Nathan Ake’s headed goal seconds before halftime – and with the game level at 1-1 – looked like it would be disallowed as it appeared that Manuel Akanji was offside in front of keeper Bernd Leno.

Akanji jumped to allow the ball to pass between his legs and into the net.

“That moment made a huge impact. Everyone that plays football, has some knowledge about football, are 100 per cent sure they have to disallow that.

“It’s impossible to not. It’s a clear offside, it concerns us how that goal was not disallowed.

“The more times you see that moment, the more sure you are to disallow it. Our players saw it, everyone on the pitch at that moment had the same opinion,” Silva told reporters.

The Portuguese manager had already picked up yellow cards in games against Everton, Brentford and Arsenal.

Silva waved his arms in disbelief at the officials after VAR ruled it was a goal, while his furious players stomped into the tunnel for the halftime break.

Fulham captain Tim Ream, who was on target for his team, said the goal changed the tempo of the game.

“You never want to lose a game like that.

“We had a good first half and a very much below average second half.

“We didn’t show the same aggressiveness in the second half and results like that happen,” Ream told reporters.

Erling Haaland, named UEFA Player of the Year earlier in the week, turned the game into a rout with his three second-half goals.

Manchester City’s assistant manager, Juanma Lillo, believed the goal was good, and more definitive than a controversial one Sheffield United scored against them last week.

“It’s good it happened because two similar things have happened.

“The explanation at Sheffield United we thought was offside.

“But when they gave us the explanation they said it was about being in line with the ball.

“I believe today our player was less in line than against Sheffield United,” Lillo, who is filling in for Pep Guardiola while he recovers from back surgery, told reporters.

The VAR ruling, however, was resoundingly panned on social media.

Broadcaster and former Tottenham defender, Michael Dawson, said: “I completely disagree with the decision. Completely offside, no wonder Marco Silva’s angry.

“Leno takes an extra step because he thinks Akanji is going to take an extra touch.”
