Why I’m pleased Fulham sold Mitrovic – Arsenal defender

Arsenal defender Ben White is happy Aleksandar Mitrovic won’t be with Fulham on Saturday.

Mitrovic was sold by Fulham last week to Al-Hilal.

Ahead of Sunday’s derby, White told arsenal.com: “I played against him in the Championship as well and that was always hard, so he’s a very good striker and one that I’m quite pleased to see go!

“It’s going to be a tough game. They’re going to be coming to Arsenal wanting to get some points, so it’s our job to do what we need to do.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game [against Palace]. They’re a very good side with a very good manager who knows what he’s doing. Especially with 10 men, it’s a hard place to go.

“I don’t think you’ve seen the best of what we can do. We’re looking to be better than last year.”

He told FFCtv: “I know how big a club Fulham is.

“They always have quality players, they’re playing in the Premier League – the best league in the world – so I didn’t have to think much about it.

“I’m happy it’s all done now and I can just focus on the football and help the team build on last season, when they did amazing.”

Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey to Join Fulham for €21m from Ajax

Nigerian left full back, Calvin Bassey will be joing English Premier League side, Fulham from Ajax for a fee in the region of €21m.

Recall that Ajax  rejected an initial fee offer of £15m for Bassey last week.

But the clubs have now settled on an increased sum plus a sell-on fee.

The deal remains subject to personal terms being agreed

Speaking on Bassey’s future Ajax manager, Maurice Steijn told Dutch daily, Telegraaf, “I told Calvin Bassey it would be better to leave Ajax.

“Also because of the money. When he leaves — we can strengthen the squad properly. I have told him this honestly.”

He joined Ajax last summer after two years at Rangers, where he made 65 appearances in total, winning the league title in 2021 and the Scottish Cup the following year.

Since joining the Dutch side, he has made 39 appearances, scoring one goal and providing five assists.

Bassey, who came through the youth academy at Leicester City, made his Nigeria debut in March 2022 and has gone on to make made 10 appearances for his country.

The Athletic previously reported that Fulham are looking to strengthen several positions in their squad this summer and have shown interest in Leicester City defender Timothy Castagne.

The London club have also had a bid rejected for Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi and could return with a fresh bid again for the 22-year-old.

  • Southampton relegated from Premier League

    Southampton relegated from Premier League

Southampton’s 11-year stay in the Premier League ended in tame fashion as their relegation was confirmed with defeat at home by Fulham.

Aleksandar Mitrovic, making his return from an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh, sealed Saints’ fate with a stooping header after Carlos Vinicius’ opener.

The hosts could have few complaints about the outcome after producing a muted performance despite knowing they had to win to have any chance of pulling off an unlikely survival mission.

They did have a Carlos Alcaraz strike disallowed for a marginal offside just before Vinicius broke the deadlock but the confident Cottagers were comfortably the better side.

Willian’s first-half volley was cleared off the line by fellow Brazilian Lyanco, who had earlier been fortunate to escape a video assistant referee’s penalty check for handball.

But Vinicius tucked home after Lyanco’s clearance ricocheted to him kindly off Harrison Reed and Mitrovic nodded in his 12th league goal of the season from Harry Wilson’s cross.

Southampton, lethargic throughout, had no response after falling behind and will be playing Championship football next season for the first time since 2012.b

EPL: Fulham dent Leicester City’s survival hopes after 5-3 thrashing

Fulham football club dented Leicester City’s chances of surviving relegation after hammering the foxes by 5-3 in a thrilling English Premier League encounter on Monday afternoon.

Willian and Tom Cairney scored a brace each for the cottagers in their 5-3 pummeling of the foxes.

But the Foxes, who won the Premier League in stunning fashion in 2016 and lifted the FA Cup two years ago, are staring relegation in the face.

Leicester are outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Harvey Barnes scored two goals and Maddison scored one for Leicester City to make the score line respectable at 5-3.

Leicester City gained promotion to the EPL in the season 2013-14 season and have since remained in top flight football.

10 years after the foxes could be heading back to the second tier of English football.

  • I’ll never play in Brazil again – Willian

I’ll never play in Brazil again – Willian

Fulham midfielder Willian has ruled out playing again in Brazil.

Willian spent a year with Corinthians after leaving Arsenal and was harried and harassed by fans which forced him to return to Europe.

He said, “I will never go back to Brazil to play football there.

“I saw relentless pressure there, which sometimes escalated into violence and threats to family and children. I have to protect my family.”

With Fulham this season, Willian has been outstanding, playing some of the best football of his career.

  • EPL: Leed’s survival hopes dealt blow by Fulham

EPL: Leed’s survival hopes dealt blow by Fulham

Leeds United’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League were dealt another blow as Fulham condemned Javi Gracia’s side to a third successive defeat at Craven Cottage.

Second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Andreas Pereira proved enough to earn victory for the hosts, who reinforced their bid to seal a top-half finish and climbed one place to ninth.

But the loss means Leeds remain just two points above the relegation places, in 16th, before Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City directly below them play later on Saturday.

A quality first-time finish by Wilson, after Illan Meslier had got an unconvincing hand to Willian’s cross, broke the deadlock after 58 minutes.

Pereira then slotted in after Meslier again failed to effectively deal with a cross on a difficult afternoon for the Leeds goalkeeper.

Somewhat belatedly, the two goals eventually sparked Leeds into action, and Joao Palhinha’s own goal, after Patrick Bamford had redirected the ball with an outstretched leg, offered Leeds hope with 11 minutes remaining.

But despite eight minutes of stoppage time they were unable to force an equaliser.

Gabriel Martinelli started upfront against Sporting in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Gunners currently hold a five-point lead at the top of the table, but face a stern test against in-form Fulham.

“Eddie is out too so we have Gabi out, Eddie out and Leo is out so we have to adapt in this period of the season.

“We have different options, we can play with a winger more as a 9, we can play with a false 9, let’s see,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

  • Joao Felix sees red as Fulham defeat Chelsea

Joao Felix sees red as Fulham defeat Chelsea

Joao Felix was sent off on his Chelsea debut as his new side lost a west London derby at Fulham to increase the pressure on Blues boss Graham Potter.

Joao Felix, who only joined Chelsea on Wednesday in a £9.7m loan deal until the end of the season from Atletico Madrid, was shown a straight red card for a horrible lunge on defender Kenny Tete after 58 minutes.

It was 1-1 at the time, with Willian putting the hosts ahead against his former side in the first half, before Kalidou Koulibaly equalised early in the second.

But the 10 men of Chelsea could not hang on to a point as Carlos Vinicius headed in a 72nd-minute winner.

Willian later said, “We deserved the win. We know how difficult it is to play against Chelsea. They are in a difficult moment but we are a really good team. We deserved it and we have to carry on.

“I had an amazing seven years at Chelsea. I have a big respect for the fans and the club. I play for Fulham now and have to do my best. It was a special night.”
