The remains of Mr Ola Ibironke, the late Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) Captain was on Friday interred in Ibadan amidst tribute and tears.

Ibironke, popularly known as Dudu Heritage died on Sunday, Sept. 12, within the IGC arena after a training session.

Mrs Bimbo Oshin-Ibironke, a popular Yoruba movie actress and wife of the deceased, described her late husband as the best that every gifted woman would want as husband.

She also described the late IGC captain as her backbone.

“I have cried more than I have done in my 25 years as an actress. It all still looks like a dream to me. With a heavy heart and tears in my eyes, I write this tribute.

“I had the great opportunity and rare privilege of being the wife and partner to the most wonderful, loving, romantic, peaceful, kind, and God-fearing man any woman can wish for.

“He was the love of my life, the one who did everything humanly possible to protect me even in the face of all sorts of misconceptions.

Oshin-Ibironke said that her late husband’s life taught her unconditional love and kindness, expressing gratitude that she had opportunity to share his dreams, hopes, love as well as friendship.

“His life taught me unconditional love and kindness. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to share his dreams, hopes, love, friendship, and much more.

“My instinct told me to call you to come out and see me at the car park. A loving and accommodating father to several people, in fact, tell me a man of noble character and I will present my husband to you.

“My heavenly Father used you to bless me with the most amazing and adorable children. When our daughter asked, Mummy, where is daddy? I only answered her that daddy has gone to be with the Angels.

“And that we will never see him physically again, but only in our dream. She asked again when is daddy coming back to us? I replied that it won’t be long,” she said.

She said that she couldn’t hold back her tears knowing full well that her late husband won’t return to them.

She added that ”You were my backbone, my rib, we had great plans, we laughed and talked about our old age. You promised to watch over me like a father.

“Your smile lights and melts my heart. Your laughter is contagious. The swiftness of your departure is still shocking.

“I keep asking myself how could Ola die just like that? Dudu, why do you have to go? How do we explain this to grandma?”

One of the wives of the deceased, Mrs Gladys Kanu filed a lawsuit against the children of the deceased, the Nigerian Navy and her co-wife.

She explained that her mother was the first lady during the deceased reign as the military Governor of Lagos and that her parents were divorced under native law and custom and that the union produced seven offspring.

“All we are trying to do is that we bury our father from day one. We were brought to court, it was a shock to us. It is a great dishonour,”she said.

Abiona said that she wanted to partake in the funeral rites of the late ex-Lagos Military Administrator as the ‘Ada’ of the family in accordance with Igbo laws and customs.

Audrey Joe- Ezigbo, the second daughter of the deceased described the suit as a gross misrepresentation and that the family had no issue with the plaintiff partaking in the funeral rites of the deceased.

Addressing the court, Mrs Gladys Ndubuisi-Kanu, the plaintiff and one of the wives of the deceased described herself as the only legal wife.

She said her and her late spouse were still co-habiting until his passing.

She said that the first son of her late husband, Mr Kelly Kanu had taken over their property in their village at Ovim, Abia.

“My matrimonial home at Ovim was taken over by Kelly, he broke into my room and changed the locks. I no longer have the keys of my home at Ovim that I stayed with my husband for Christmas, Kelly has the keys.

“He changed the locks and I do not have anywhere to stay at Ovim, he sent away the caretaker of our Ovim home who had lived there for 40-years,” she said.

Gladys informed the court that one Jeffrey who she described as Kelly’s 38-year-old younger sibling who lived with her and her late spouse also broke doors in their Lagos home.

In order to settle the ongoing dispute, Justice Christopher Balogun asked two Igbo Community leaders from Ovim in Abia to give a “step by step” explanation of the roles of some members of the Kanu family in the traditional rites.

As at the time of filing this report (5.46pm) the family and their lawyers are in the courtroom trying to settle the dispute over the deceased’s burial arrangements.
