New Zealand begins funerals for mosque shooting victims

The bodies of victims from New Zealand’s mosques mass shooting were carried in open caskets on the shoulders of mourners into a large tent at Christchurch’s Memorial Park Cemetery on Wednesday.

The bodies, wrapped in white cloth, were laid to face Mecca, and, after jenazah (funeral) prayers, were carried towards their freshly dug graves.

Seeing the body lowered down, it was a very emotional time for me,” Gulshad Ali, who had traveled from Auckland to attend the first funeral, said.

Several mounds of dirt piled high marked the site of multiple graves which will be used for New Zealand’s worst mass shooting.

Hundreds gathered to mourn, some men wearing a taqiyah (skullcap), others shalwar kameez (long tunic and trousers), while women wore hijabs and scarfs.

The majority of victims were migrants or refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Somalia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The youngest was a boy of three, born in New Zealand to Somali refugee parents.

The first two victims buried, father and son Khaled and Hamza Mustafa, came from war-torn Syria.

I cannot tell you how gutting it is, a family came here for safety and they should have been safe here,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, visiting the city for the second time since the massacre.

Heavily armed police stood watch with flowers tucked in their revolver holsters and attached to their high powered rifles.

Ardern said next Friday’s call to prayers for Muslims in New Zealand will be broadcast nationally and there will be a two minute silence on Friday.

There is a desire to show support for the Muslim community as they return to mosques on Friday,” she said.

The bullet-ridden Al Noor mosque, where over 40 people died, is being repaired for Friday prayers.

Near the mosque, members of rival gangs did a Maori haka, a powerful indigenous ceremonial performance, and a crowd of people sung New Zealand’s national anthem as the sun set.

The Australian National Imams Council has called on Imams to dedicate this Friday’s Khutbah (sermon) to the Christchurch mosque mass shooting.

The attack on any Muslim or any innocent person anywhere around the world is an attack on all Muslims and all people.

This is a human and an international tragedy, not only a Muslim and NZ tragedy.

These acts of terror are there to divide us and we reject this in all its forms and ways, but rather we will stay united and strong,” the council said in a statement.

Weird! Man visits funeral home to have sex with corpse

As long as human beings occupy the face of the earth, strange things will keep happening.

A burglar has admitted breaking into a funeral home and having sex with a corpse.

Kasim Khuram, from Aston, in Birmingham, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to an offence of sexual penetration of a body at the Co-Op Funeral Home in Walsall Road, in the city’s Great Barr area, on November 11

A judge adjourned Khuram’s sentencing for a psychiatric report until January 31, 2019, but warned the defendant he was facing a ‘substantial’ jail term.

Kasim Khuram, who appeared in custody in Birmingham Crown Court dock flanked by a security officer, touched his chest and gave the thumbs-up to supporters in the public gallery, during a 10-minute hearing on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old also admitted burglary of the funeral home, breaking into the building with the intention of stealing. Wearing a black hooded top and trousers and sporting a Palestinian flag tattoo on the left side of his neck, he stood with hands clutched in front of him as the charges were read.

The offence he admitted stated:”You intended an act of penetration by a part of a body, by a part of your body. ‘The penetration being sexual and knowing or being reckless as to knowing that is what was being penetrated.”

Judge Francis Laird QC said: “I will adjourn your sentence to the date that has been raised in court. ‘I will allow your solicitors the appropriate time to present to the court a medical report which your solicitor thinks will assist in delivering the appropriate sentence for you.

“But you must be under no illusion that you will receive a sentence of imprisonment for your offending in this case – a substantial sentence of imprisonment”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Peoples Democratic Party’s vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the national chairman of the All Peoples Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, on Saturday attended the funeral service of popular politician, Tony Anenih.

The Mass took place at St. Anthony Catholic Cathedral, Uromi where the Bishop in charge of the Diocese, Most Rev. Donatus Ogun, urged Nigerian politicians to stop politics of mudslinging.

According to the Bishop, Nigerians are tired of dirty politics, stating that as the 2019 general elections approaches, politicians should tell Nigerians what they can do to make their lives better.

Nigerians want hope, they want to be told what the candidates will do to make their lives better, they are tired of hearing rubbish from politicians,” he said.

He emphasised, “Learn to go to church and have the fear of God; always know that there is a God who is ready to forgive when you come back to Him.”

Be generous, if you cannot spend what you can die and leave behind, how do you expect God to assist you? Heaven is real and we must work hard to enter heaven,” he said, noting that the late Tony Anenih was like a collosus.

The Bishop stated, “Chief Anenih who helped to give solutions to many people’s problems, he was a man of integrity, he gave people opportunities to live.”

Striker Jamie Vardy and his Leicester City team mates will travel to Thailand for the funeral of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha after Saturday’s English Premier League match against Cardiff City.

The 60-year-old billionaire died last Saturday with four others when his helicopter crashed next to Leicester’s King Power Stadium.

The funeral, likely to last a week, starts on Saturday in Bangkok.

Former England international Vardy said on Friday that he and the other players had to be there.

“That’s how we are — we are a close-knit group. We are one big family and one of the main reasons for that is Vichai,” he said. “For us to be there is massively important.”

Vichai bought Leicester in 2010 and the team went on to stun the football world by winning the English Premier League title against the odds in 2016.

Vardy said the last week had been the hardest of his life but the players, who will travel by road to Cardiff, were keen to play on Saturday.

“We all spoke about wanting to play,” said Vardy. “It’s what Vichai would have wanted and that’s we are going to do.

“We know what we have to do and we need to go out and honour his name and put in a performance which will hopefully get the win.

“It is going to be tough and it will be very emotional, but we’ve all chatted about it. People are saying the result doesn’t matter, but for us lads we want to make it a positive result.”

Leicester City are 12th in the table on 13 points, while promoted Cardiff City are 17th with five points from 10 games.

Cardiff City fans are planning to unveil a giant flag with the Thai emblem at the match.

Police arrest leader of Imo bank robbery at father’s funeral

…says he wanted to give his father a ‘befitting’ burial

The police in Imo State have reportedly apprehended the mastermind of a bank robbery which led to the killing of a bank customer in the state.

The gunmen were reported to have trailed the bank customer to a Zenith bank branch on Wetheral Road, Owerri, the state capital.

They reportedly carted away the money which the victim wanted to deposit in the bank and shot him dead.

The assailants reportedly injured three policemen attached to the bank, shooting indiscriminately as they fled the area.

However, one of the gunmen was shot dead by a plain-clothes cop in the bank.

After six weeks of investigation, two suspects– Justice Ogbenna, aka JJ, and Okechukwu Onwuamaegbu– were on Friday arrested in Aba, Abia State by operatives of the Imo State Police Command.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, told newsmen on Sunday that policemen attached to the Special Anti-robbery Squad of the command arrested the suspected robbers at the Saint Francis Mortuary in Osisioma Aba, Abia State.

Enwerem disclosed that the suspects led the men and officers of the command to their hideout at Umuejea Nvosi in the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State where two AK 47 rifles, seven magazines, and 175 live ammunition were recovered.

The police spokesperson said, “The two prime suspects who coordinated the Zenith Bank robbery in Owerri on February 23, have been arrested.

“We trailed them to Aba, where they were nabbed. They immediately led our men to their hideout at Umuejea Nvosi in the Isiala Ngwa South LGA, where exhibits like two AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, and 127 live ammunition were recovered.”

Enwerem confirmed that the suspects, who were cooling their heels at the state police command in Owerri, had made useful statements and were helping the police with information that could help in the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.

He disclosed that the police would charge them to court at the end of investigations.

A top police source told newsmen that the leader of the gang, Ogbenna, was arrested on the day he planned to bury his late father.

He said, “We got information that he would bury his father on Friday and we trailed him to the mortuary. We laid siege to the morgue. Immediately he arrived with his family members and friends to carry the remains of his father home, we arrested him.”

The police source, who described the suspect as a notorious armed robber, claimed that he had jumped bail in Anambra State in 2016 in a similar case of armed robbery.
